PATENT OFFICE.'
VIRGINIA WHITEHEAD GLVER, OF SAVANNAH, GEORGIA.
FOLDING TABLE Fon SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0."7s'1,415,- dated Januaryl, 1905 Application filed September 9, 1904. Seri-al Ne. 223,894.` i
T all whom t may con/cern.
Be it known that I, VIRGINIA WHITEIIEAD GLovER, a citizenof the United States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia,V have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables for Sewing-Machines; and I vdo declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, 4such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bev ing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part 'of this specification. i
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in folding tables forlsewing-machines; andthe object of the invention is to p'roducea simple and eicient device of this character which maybe readily attached to an ordinary sewing-machine and vwhich when not in use may be folded out of the way.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
-My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which v Figure 1 is a perspective View of the upper portion of a sewing-machine, showing my improved folding table `opened in readiness for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the end wings of the table folded in. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the machine withV the drawer folded in, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4: of Fig. 3.
Reference-now b eing had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the top of a sewing-machine of ordinary construction, and B designates series of drawers on either side of the machine below the top.
Mounted in suitable guideways (designated in the drawings lby letters C) is my improved table, comprising two'central sections D and D', which are hinged `together at d, said sections being of equal width and one adapted to t E-and'E', which are hinged to the sections D and D', respectively, at e. The inner Inarginal edge of each wing E has a notch F, (shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings,) and the outer marginal edge of each wing E is notched, as at F', which notches are provided for the purpose ofv allowing the -table when folded to push back upon the guideways without interference withthe legs H o the'machine.
Intermediate the two sets of drawers B is a'central drawer I, andJ J designate bracketarms, which have a longitudinal movement through strips J' at the sides of-said drawers B. Said drawer I and the bracket-arms are adapted to.\loe drawn out forthe purpose.of forming supports for thefolding table-sections in the manner shown in Fig. l of the drawings', and when it is desired to utilize the end wings the top drawer of each series Bis drawn out in the manner shown 'in Fig. 1 of n Y the drawings to forin arest for the wings.
O designates hooks which are pivotally mounted upon the sections E' and are adapted to engage headed pins or screws O', fastened to the sections or wings E, whereby the two wings on each end may be held in the same plane;
When it is desired'to` utilize a shorter table, l'
the two end wings E and E' may be folded upon the upper surfacesof the sections D and D', respectively, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, in which adjustment the brack-` ets J may be utilized for supporting the hinged ends of the sections D and E.
By the provision of the construction shown and described as embodying my invention it will be observed that a simple and eiiicient folding table is provided which may be applied to any ordinary sewing-machine by first withdrawing the` upper drawers and utilizing the drawer-cleats for supports ,for the table, or
when constructinga machine with the View of having the table a permanent fixture therefor special provision may be had for the reception of a table in the manner shown in the drawings. v I
While I have described` a particular detailed construction of folding table embodying the features of my invention, it will be under- IOO stood that I may vary the same, if desired, as to details Without in any Way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention. what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the frame of a sewingmachine table having a top and legs supporting the same, an elongated recess underneath the top, a leaf made up of a central section and end sections hinged thereto, each of said sections being further composed of an inner and an outer section, adapted to fold one upon another to slide Within said recess and to be eX- tended therefrom, sliding bars flush with the bottom of said recess adapted to be extended to form supports for the table, drawers mounted to slide in said frame with their tops Hush with the bottom of said recess` and adapted to form supplemental supports for the end seetions of the leaf. the inner and outer sections of the said end sections having notches, designed to register and to receive the legs, When said sections are folded together within the recess, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto alix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VIRGINIA WIII'IEIIEAD GLOVER.
