NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,088, dated April 11, 1905. Application filed August 16, 190}. Serial No. 220,893.
To (/H- ll'fl/U'lll if pm 1 con/(Writ.-
Be it known that we, 'lingmas B. l lanuau'r and Main i liamun'r, CltlZOIiS of the United States. residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks: and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in nut-locks; and the device involves certain novel features of construction, which will be fully described herein.
This specification is an exact description of one example of our invention, while the claim defines the actual scope thereof.
eference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate correspoiuling parts in all the views.
Figure l is a side elevation of our improved device, showing the nut locked. Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is an end view of a jam-bolt. Fig. A: a similar view of an ordinary nut. Fig. 5 is an end view of a washer.
l designates the parts to be held together, while 2 is the head of a bolt 3, which bolt is provided with a threaded portion 1.
is a longitudinal threaded orifice in the outer end of the bolt.
6 is an ordi nary washer, provided with biting corrugations on its inner face.
I is a nut adapted to screw on the threaded portion i, which nut is about one-half the size of an ordinary nut.
s is the head of a jam-bolt, which has a small threaded portion 9 adapted to screw into the orifice :3, the threading on said threaded portion a being opposite to that on the portion i. Said head is just one-half the width of an ordinary nut. nut T and the head 8 is equal to the width of any ordinary nut.
l j l Thus the width of the 10 represents biting corrugations on the inner faces of the washers t3, the nut T, and the head 8 of the jam-nut.
The operation is as follows: In almost all bolts the exact length required is known, and
so our improved bolt would in practice generally extend a distance beyond the parts 1 equal to the width of the nut T, and thus when said not is screwed onto said bolt its inner face will fit close against the parts 1 and its outer face will be just in a line with or a trifle beyond the end of said bolt. The jam-bolt S 9 would then be screwed into the orifice 5 until the inner face 8 of said bolt jammed against the outer face of the nut 7. Thus since the threading is right-hamled and the threading 9 left-handed, or vice versa, it will be readily seen that when they are heavily jarred one will try to creep in one direction and the other in another, and hence they will continually jam closer together, thus forming a perfect lock.
The biting corrugations 10 help to hold the various parts in closer contact.
If desired, one or more washers 6 may be used to regulate the position of the nut 7.
Our device is particularly adapted to wagonaxles and all spindles in general, as the orifice 5 may be bored into any axle or similar structure without removing the same from its position and the jam-bolt inserted therein.
Various changes in the form and details of our invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence we consider ourselves entitled to all forms of the invention as may be within the intent of our claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bolt having a threaded portion and provided with a central longitudinal orifice in said threaded portion, the threads in the wall of the orifice being reverse to the threads of the bolt, an unthrezuled washer mounted on the bolt and provided on its inner face with biting projections, a nut threaded on the bolt and provided on its inner face with biting projections to take into the washer, and a jamnut embodying a head and a shank, the shank namesto this specification in the presence 01": being threaded into the orifice in the end of two subscribing witnesses.
