LEWIS A. HARKER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE SAFETY CAN COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
CAN OR RECEPTACLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,029, dated June 13, 1905.
Applic i filed September 3, 1904. Serial No. 223,281.
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEwIs A. HARKER, a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of I-Iamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cans or Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved can or receptacle, the object of the invention being to construct a can of great strength and durability, comparatively cheap to manufacture, and neat and attractive in appearance; and with this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view in section on the line a; a; of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a view in vertical section on the line I; y of Fig. 1.
1 represents the body of the can corrugated longitudinally to near its end, which is bulged outwardly, forming an annular shoulder 2 at the end of the corrugations. The bottom 3 is provided with an annular U- shaped bend 4 to receive the end of body 1 therein, which is securely clamped in the U shaped bend, and the edge of the latter is bent over the shoulder 2.
The lower end of the cylindrical portion of the can is corrrugated vertically, preferably with a large number of small corrugations, which add great strength to the can and allow the coating material, as well as the cleaningpickle, to penetrate to all bottom portions of the ca A great many slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A can constructed at its end with an annular series of corrugations and a bottom constructed with a plain U-shaped peripheral portion embracing the end of the can having the annular series of corrugations.
2. A can having its body portion corrugated longitudinally, said corrugations terminating at a point removed from the end of the can, said end portion of the can having smaller longitudinal corrugations and a bot tom constructed with a plain U-shaped pe ripheral portion embracing the corrugated end portion of the can.
3. A can comprising a longitudinally-corrugated body having an annular shoulder between its end and the corrugated mainortion, the end portion of the can having ongitudinal corrugations, and a bottom having a U-shaped peripheral portion encircling the corrugated end portion of the can and having its free edge bent over the said annular shoulder at the end of the main corrugations of the can.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LEWIS A. HARKER.
