- ENTOIVIOLOGICAL MOUNT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,501, dated June 13, 1905.

Application filed July 15,1904. Serial No. 216,701.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES ABBOTT DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Entomological Mounts, of which thefollowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to mounts for entomological specimens intended for preservation and display, and has for its primary purpose a structure which will expose to view both sides of the specimen, prevent defacing pressure of the inclosing parts upon the extremities of the exhibit, furnish a means for identifying the inclosure, resist fracture, minimize the time required for mounting, and be embodied in a form convenient for packing or storage.

To the above ends my invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a front view of my new mount; Fig. 2, a rear elevation; Fig. 3, a transverse section of the same on line a; of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a similar section of the same on line y y of Fig. 1.

Like reference-letters indicate like parts throughout the views.

My device consists of a rectangular faceplate a, of glass or other transparent material, above a base or back plate 6 of like material, the latter having in the center of its upper surface a depression 0 to receive the body (Z of the specimen. Intermediate the plates a and Z) is a mat 6, with a central perforation 6'. This detached mat serves the purpose of sufliciently separating the plates to allow room for the wings or extremities f of the specimen without defacement thereby and at the same time does not infringe upon the transparent central field.

The parts described are assembled, as above indicated, with the body of the specimen intermediate the plates, which parts are next bound together by marginal strips 9 of adhesive material, such as passe-partout. This binding means, besides minimizing the time consumed in mounting, furnishes a margin of such a character that the mount is protected against fracture when dropped and with the mat renders the specimen bug-proof.

Upon the upper margin of the face-plate a is afiixed a strip of paper It to receive any scientific data relating to the inclosed specimen, while upon the corresponding margin of the plate I) is a similar strip e to receive the collectors data.

As will be readily observed by reference to Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, the back plate 6 is flat throughout except where it is provided with a narrow depression, as indicated by c, to receive the body of an insect. In virtue of this it will be observed that a large number of the devices may be superposed in a small space, the narrow depressed portion 0 of each device being disposed alongside the narrow depressed portion 0 of the next lower device, which is inverted. It will also be observed that because of the back plate being flat throughout, except where it is depressed at c, accommodation is afforded for the body of the insect, and yet the edges of the device are left narrow to permit of the device being placed in a narrow and inexpensive frame, if desired.

Having described my invention, what I claim is-- 1. Adevice of the character described, comprising a transparent back plate having a narrow depression; the said plate being flat throughout except Where it is depressed, a flat transparent face-plate arranged on the back plate, and means for retaining the plates in their proper relative positions.

2. A device of the character described, comprising a transparent back plate having a narrow depression; the said plate being flat throughout except where it is depressed, a fiat, transparent face-plate arranged above the back plate, a mat interposed between the plates and having an opening exposing the depression, and means for retaining the plates and mat in their proper relative positions.
