To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL P. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Cigar Retainers and Cutters, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of a novel retainer in which may be placed and retained the lighted end of a partially-smoked cigar that the latter may be put in the pocket whenever it is desired to stop smoking. The retainer has also connected with it a cutter to cut the tip of a cigar preparatory to smoking the same.
Figure 1 in side elevation represents my improved retainer and cutter. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section in the line 90, Fig. 2, showing a partially-smoked cigar as being held in the retainer.
For the production of my retainer I take a tube a, which may be of metal or any suitable material that will not burn, and connect with the same a pair of jaws or clips I) under the control of a suitable actuating device 0, shown as a ring slidable on the tube and surrounding the arms of the clips. The ends of the clips are represented as secured to the tube by rivets b. The tube is provided with a diaphragm or partition e at a suitable distance between its ends, said diaphragm closing the tube so as to leave a space 6, in which may be inserted the lighted or burning end of a cigar, as represented in Fig. 3, the diaphragm preventing any ashes or fire from escaping into the pocket through the tube. The diaphragm, as represented in Fig. 1, is shown as comprising a cup 6 forced into the tube; but the tube and diaphragm might be of one and the same piece. The tube at its end opposite that in which the burned end of the cigar is to be inserted and retained is shown as provided with a hole f, in which may be inserted the tip of the cigar to be smoked. This end of the retainer receives a cylindrical portion g, having a bayonet-slot 9, that receives a stud h, fixed to the tube. The cylindrical portion 9 may be revolved somewhat in the end of the tube. Between the diaphragm e and the closed end g of the cylindrical portion I insert a spiral spring h. Normally the spring acts to move the cylindrical portion to the right, as represented in Fig. 3, so that the hooked portion of the bayonet-slot engages the pin it and limits the outward movement of the cylindrical portion.
When it is desired to cut the tip of a cigar, the latter is inserted in the hole f and the cylindrical portion g is moved to the left in the drawings and the cutting edge h of the cylindrical portion (represented by dotted lines, Fig. 1) is made to cross the opening f and cut off the tip of the cigar.
When it is desired to remove the tips that are accumulated in the retainer, it is only necessary to. push the cylindrical portion in slightly and turn the same in the direction of the arrow thereon, Fi 2, until the open mouth of the bayonet-s ot comes opposite the pin, when the cylindrical portion may be withdrawn. I may have one or more of t ese bayonet-slots, as desired.
The lighted end of a cigar partially smoked may be inserted in the open end of the tube, as represented in Fig. 3, when the clips are open, as represented in Fig. 1, and thereafter the actuator 0 may be moved on said tube to the left, as shown in the'drawings, into the position Fig. 3, thus causing the clips to embrace the sides of the cigar and hold the same securely in position.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an article as described, the combina,
tion of a cylindrical body open at the end, bayonet-slots in one end thereof, and a second cylinder closed at one end'and having studs thereon adapted to cooperate with the aforesaid bayonet-slots by which means the two cylindrical portions may be detachably interlocked.
2. In a device as described, a cylindrical body portion open at both ends, and bayonetslots in one end thereof, a second cylindrical body closed at one end and having studs adapted to cooperate with the aforesaid bayonet-slots, a diaphragm mounted within said first-named cylindrical portion and a spiral spring inclosed between the said diaphragm and the said second cylindrical body whereby the two cylindrical bodies are held in separable interlocked relation.
