SPIRIT-LEVEL.
To all whom it may concern,.- Beit known that I, JOHANN MARTIN, a citifzen of the United States, residing at Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of v.'Iexas, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements hereby clear, and exact description of the same, erence beinghad to the annexed Io in `Spirit-Levels; and I do declare that the following is a ful, re drawings, making a part of this specification, and to t e letters of reference marked thereon.
The presentinvention has for its obj ect to provide a spirit-level that will be simple in construction and easily used in determining vertical and horizontal planes With comparative accuracy; and it consists in a spirit-level constructed substantially as shown in the drawin s and hereinafter described: and
claime a y Figure 1 ofthe drawings is a side elevation of aspir'itflevel constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical crosssection thereof, taken on line 2` 2 of Fig.y 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of. the two sections-Of bushing when together. Fig.. 4 is a erspective view of one of the sections of ushing. In the accompanying drawin s, A repre-` sents the stock or ,body of the evel of any suitable form, size, 'and construction nand of wood or other p referred material and has an dlcated at a. a bushing comprising tWo clrcular'sections B C, each section havingfan outer beveled face b, -so that a clear view of the spirit-.glass will not be obstructed.
respectively, so that when the two sections inthe opening tt.
After one of the bushingsections issecured in place within the opening of the stock or body of the level thespirit-glass is after which the other ushi'ng-section is preferred means whichywill securely hold the spirit-glass in place, as shown in Fig. 2 of the 5o drawings.
' `The stock or body of the level and the Specification of Letters Patent; Application filed November 8, 1 905. Serial No. `285.665.

-marks ef, so that they may be used either as spirit-glass are providedwith indicator-` a level or plumb, as would be required, the l spirit-glass containing the necessary amount of hquld, suc
h as alcohol, as indicatedat g.
The' essential feature of the invention rel-- sides in the two bushing-sections B C when constructed as `hereinbeforedescribed, which provides a simplev and practical means for securing the s irit-glass within the opening Of the lstock or ody` of the level.
.. After one of the bushing-sections is placedy in .position Within the opening in the body or stock of the level the spirit lass is then placed against the bushin -sectlon so that it will restagainst the curve 4seat thereof,'after which the other bushing-section is placed against thes irit-glass within the opening of the stock or odyo'f the level. The curved Seat-upon the inner side of each bushing-sectionl when the twosectionsare together form a semicircularseat for the spirit-glass, which willsecurely hold it\in. position within the 4opening without anyscrews or other like fastenings. i"
The tWo bushing-sections are separate and independent ofthe stock or bodyl of thelevel, as well as independent of each other, and consequently can be' applied to any stock or body after the necessary opening is. formed therein.
Havin now fully described myinvention, what I c aim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A spiritdevel comprising a stock or body with Openmg therethrough, a bushing independent of said stock or body and consisting lof two separable and lindependentv sections each having an outer beveled face and an inner curved seat, said seats when together forming a semicircular seat and a spirit-glass held within the seat by the ltwo bushing-sections, substantially as and forthepurpose set forth. l
vIn testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two -W1tnesses.
