' Specification of Letters Patent.
latented June 19, 1966.
Application 516a November 20.1965. Serial No. 288,223.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND S. SAYER, Jr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahoma city, in the county of Oklahoma,
.Territory of Oklahoma, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Field Chests and Desks, of which the following is a specification;
, will subject it, which-will occupy very little space in a tent or thelike, and at the same time will provide a convenient form of writ-' ing-desk and wherein apparel may be placed, and which is provided with anir'nproved construction of legs, which may readily be folded up and when folded will form a substantial part of the bracing frame or bars of the structure. I
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention with the supporting-legs in extended position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the legs being folded. Fig. 3 is an end view thereof. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the locking-bar employed. Fig. 5 is a front view with the doors open and one of the legs shown in folded po sition and the other extended. Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section, parts being shown in side elevation.
Corresponding and like parts are referred. to 1n the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
My improved field chest or desk comprises a casing, preferably constructed of veneers or other suitable li ht wood, provided with two sides 1, a top 2, ottom 3, and back 4. These main parts are preferably braced at their edges by wooden strips 5 at the sides and back and top, which are held rigidly together, preferably by metallic corner-pieces 6, as shown, and the edges of the sides between said bracing-strips are preferably covered with metallic sheathing 7 at both top and bottom. J
ments, arranged one above the other and separated by partition-walls 8. compartments is provided at its frontwith 'a door 9, and all of said doors are hinged at one edge to open downwardly and outwardly, as shown in the vertical transverse section in the drawings, and each door is limited and guided in its movement by means of metallic strips 10, which are secured to opposite sides of the door and are slotted to receive a stud or screw 10. Each door 9 is provided at its free edge with a lock 11, which'is designed to engage with coacting keepers 12 on the adj acent "portion of the casing when the door is The combined writin desk and chestis divided into any preferre number of compartpigeonholes 14. jSundry of the other compartments are intended as storage-receptacles for garments or wearing-apparel or for other articles, and said compartments (desig-' nated 15) are provided with extensible drawers 16, each of which co'rnprisesa back 16 and a bottom horizontal member 16*, which is mounted to slide horizontally into and out'of its respective compartment within guides 17, as shown.
The supporting-legs for the chest are so arranged that they may be folded out of the way when it is desired to transport the chest from one place to another, and each of said legs (designated 18)'is secured to one member 19 of a leaf or strap hinge, the other member 20 of which is attached by screws or the like to the lower end of one of the side bracing-V strips 5. The said hinges are located on the outer sides of both the strips and the legs, and the legs are designed to fold inwardly, as indi'cated in the drawings. Each leg is attached intermediate-of its ends to one end of a metal brace 21, theother end 'of which is provided with a metal stud 22, working in the horizontally-extending metal -bounded slot 23 of a bottom brace 24, and the said 'braces and legs are so arranged with respect to their relative lengths that the legs when folded willform a continuation of the lower bracing-strip 24, as indicated in the bottom' they serve as metallic corner-pieces to preserve the lower corners of the chest from in ury.
In order to hold each of the legs in its folded position, I preferably employ a threaded bolt 26, which is designed to extend through or into the bottom 3 of the casing or chest proper, there to engage in a nut 26 which is preferably countersunk in the inner face of the said bottom. This threaded bolt 26 has anut or washer26 which is set in awell in the leg 18 and under the leaf of the hinge 19, which prevents it from being wholly withdrawn from the leg, thus avoiding any loose parts. As shown, the locking-bolt 26 serves the additional function of assisting in attaching the member 19 of the strap-hinge to the eg.
27 designates a locking-bar which isprovided at its lower end with an inwardly-extending hook 28,Which is designed to catch under the outer one of the lower braces 24 and to extend upwardly over the closed doors 9 in position to prevent access to the respective locks of the doors, and said locking-bar is provided at its upper end with a hasp 29, designed to receive a staple 30, in which a padlock 31 may be located. By this means, in addition to protecting the locks of the vari ous doors from being tampered with, the locking-bar 27 serves as an additional strengthening-brace for the chest, and the chest is provided at top and bottom with handles which are preferably formed of strips of rope 32, knotted at their ends and passed through cleats 33.
From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a very durable .and strong construction of field-chest and one that will be a great convenience to a soldier in the field, as it may be readily transported from place to place and may hold various articles of apparel without occupying much space in the tent or the like, as well as serving as a convenient form of writing-desk.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. Adevice of the character described com prising a chest or the like provided with strengthening or binding strips at its sides, hinges one leaf of each of which issecured to the lower ends of the respective bindingstrips and foldable legs carried by the other leaf of said hinges and arranged to fold inwardly whereby the pintle of the hinge will form a metallic corner-brace when the legs are in folded position.
2. A device of the character described comprising a chest or the like provided with side and bottom strengthening-strips, and legs pivotally attached to said chest and designed to fold inwardly at opposite sides of the bottom binding-strip and forming a continuation thereof.
3. A chest or the like provided at its bottom with binding or strengthening strips ex tending short of the sides thereof, and foldable legs arranged to form a continuation of said bottom binding-strip when in folded position.
4. A device of the character described com-,
prising a chest or the like provided at its edges with strengthening or binding strips metallic corner-pieces for the upper ends of the same, strap-hinges secured to the lower ends of said strips with their pintles projecting, and foldable legs carried by said hinges and arranged to fold inwardly, whereby the pintles of said hinges form bottom cornerpieces.
5. A device of the character described comprising a chest or the like provided with bottom binding or strengthening strips, legs designed to fold inwardly against opposite ends of said strips whereby to form a continuation thereof, and means for locking the said legs in folded position.
6. A device of the character described comprising a chest or the like, leaf or strap hinges having one member attached to the chest at the lower face thereof, and legs attached to the other member of said hinge, a locking bolt serving as one of the attaching means between the legs and the hinge members, and means designed to en age said bolts to hold the respective legs in folded position.
7. A device of the character described eo1nprising a chest divided into a series of compartments, a door for each of said compartments, said doors being provided with independent locking means, and a locking-bar having means whereby it may be secured to said chest and extend over all of said doorlocking means.
8. A device of the character described comprising a chest or the like divided into compartments each of which is )rovided. with a door having independent locking means, and a locking-bar provided at one end with a hook whereby it may be detachably engaged with one end of said chest and arranged to extend over all of the door-locking means, the other end of said locking-bar being provided with means whereby it may be secured to the chest.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
