To. all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MORRISON CAMP- BELL, `a citizen of the United States, and a resident 'of Lombard, in the county of Dupage and State Of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Stamp, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to hand-operated stamps such as found upon desks in offices for the purpose of aiiixing dates or other printed matter' to papers or envelops.
The object of the invention is to provide a stamp of this class with an improved inking device, to the endV that the stamp or type may uickly, neatly, and thoroughly and so that a istinct and uniform impression will be produced. l
' Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, `forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stamp to which my invention has been applied. Fig.

Fig. 4 1s a plan view of the inking-pad, certain parts being represented as broken away or shown in section; and Fig. 5 is a transverse section through the pad and its contiguous parts, taken substantially upon the line 5 5 of Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the frame of the stamp, which comprises a pair of oppositely-disposed side plates or legs 2, which support a pad box'or casing 3, preferably formed'integrally therebetween, as illustrated. From the `upper side of the pad-casing 3 a tubular guide 4 projects vertically, as shown, and upon this guide there is slidably mounted a handle 5, which telescopes therewith in a common manner, the helical s ring 6 being mounted within the guide 4, w ich affords means for normally maintaining the handle 5 in van elevated position ina well-known manner. To the lower extremity of the handle 5 a yoke 7 is attached, which is formed with verticallydepending arms 8, and between these arms a horizontal pin 9 extends, the said pin passing through vertical guide-slots 10, formed in the aforesaid side plates 2. Upon the pin or shaft 9 a carriage 11 is mounted, the body 12 within the casing 3.

This pad 18 is preferably formed of a facing-sheet of some absorbent material, such as felt. lThis facing-piece is received against a backing or grid 19. This grid consists of a plate of any material, but preferably of plate-steel or similar material, provided with a plurality of slots, grooves, or perforations 20, as shown,

provide a retainer 22. This retainer prefer-y ably consists of a resilient wire bent into a rectangular shape conforming to the interior of the casing 3. When the parts are assembled, this retainer has a relative position, (illustrated most clearly in Figs. 4 and 5 constituting a binding around the edge of the pad. This retainer of course tends by its own resiliency to expand, and this affords means for holding it in position when so placed..
From the arrangement described it will be4 seen that by reason of the flanges 21 at the back ofthe grid 19 a chamber 23 is formed the pad to be supplied with ink in a convenient manner. For this purpose' the upper wall ofthe casing 3 is preferably punched upwardly when it is formed, so as to rovide'a nipple 24, the same being provide with an opening through which the ink may be introduced. I 1 n As indicated most clearly in Figs. 4 and 5, the part of the grid 19 beneathv the nipple 24 is not provided with the perforations 20. In this arrangement whenthe ink falls upon the plate it spreads in all directions and yseeps i05- gradually through the perforations at different parts of the plate. In this way the ink becomes very well distributed before being. absorbed by the pad. This arrangement conduces very much toward producing a uni- I ro` This chamber enables i IOO formity in the impression from the plate 14, overcoming effectually the usual eiiect of blurring following immediately upon the reinking of the pad. Furthermore, the eiiect of reinking the pad in the manner suggested is much prolonged by the device described.
In order to revent the hand of the person operating the handle 5 from coming into contact with the nipple 24 when the handle is depressed, I provide a laterally-projecting ear 26, which is integral with the body of the yoke 7 extending therefrom, as shown. This ear 26 lies directly above the nipple 24 and when the handle is depressed constitutes a covering for the nipple which effectively prevents ones fingers from coming into contact with the nipple, as will be readily understood. Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to Patent- In a stamp in combination, a casing having an opening in the upper side thereof through which ink may be introduced, a pad within said casing, a printing-plate normally held against said pad, and a depressible handle adapted to actuate said printing-plate and having a laterally-projecting ear adapted to cover said opening when said handle is de ressed.
