Lemar, Patent o. 83,324, @avec october 2o, 186s.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAVVIING-NIAGH.LIN'I'IEiSl U To all whom it may concern: I
Be itlmown that I, F. M. SOHAEFFER, of Blooming Grove, 1n vthe county of Linn, and State of Kansas, have invented a new and 'improved Sawing-WIachine; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full,
clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable also, an improved means for holding a log while being .sawed, to prevent the same from rolling; and, also, in
an improved means for supportingl the block which is being sawed off.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved machine; l
Figure 2 represents a side elevation of the saw-frame a`nd a cross-sectionof the log-frame; and
Figure 3 represents a detached portiomshowing the means for changing the plane' of the saw.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the saw-ii-ame, and B the log-frame. C represents a driving-shaft, which may be operated by bevel-wheels, from the crank-shaft D, or byv any other suitable means. The said shaft may be provided with one or more balanee-wheels, whichmay also serve for communicating motion, by belts, to other mechanism. From the said wheels motion is communicated by connecting rods to the cross-head E, to which the saw-handle is connected by a joint, which will admit it to oscillate, so as to work either in a vertical or horizontal plane, or in any plane at any angle to the same. The saw receives reciprocating motion from the said cross-head.
G represents guides, through which the saw-handle works, which are supported on the bolt H, ,proj ecting from the upper end ofthe lazy-tongs I, which are jointed, at the lower end, to the oscillating lplate K,
and provided at their central axis with a bolt, c', the
head of which works in a groove in the plate K, whereby Aquired-for the saw to'work through a log, and return again to the position forv starting. M and M represent guides for the saw, which are also supported on the bolt H, and bearagainsteach side of the saw, butwhioh may be turned upward on their axial support, and when the saw, in the act of sawing, works down into the log, they are prevented from moving down with it, and rest on the top of the log. They are borne downward by the springs mlm, and when the log has been sawed oi, and the blocks drop away from the saw, the said guides will be forced down, by the springs, to their proper position on each side of the saw; If the block on one side only falls awaypthe guide on that side will be forced down to its position, and the saw will be guided between that guide and the end of the log, while the saw continues to run in that position.
N represents a feeding-shaft, which is operated bya lever-pawl and ratchet, and is provided with the feeding-wheels o o, which may be arranged to be adjusted` to and from each other on theshaft, and which are curved on their inner faces, and provided with ribs, as shown in l, which take into the surface of the log and hold with suiiicient strength to feed it along, the other end resting on the carriage P. Iy reason of the curved inner faces of the saidfeeding-wheels, the log may be so securely held that it will not be rotated by the action of the saw.
Q rep esents a grooved oscillating support for the.
block wh'ch is being sawed off, which is provided with trunnion q q, and an arm, y, whereby it is supported on the frame, and connected, by a rod, to a hand or foot-lever, R, whereby the position of the said support maybe adjusted togive the proper amount of support to the block. The said support is curved in a manner to cause the block to fall away from the saw after it has been sawed off, and a vigorous movement of the hand-lever B, in the right direction, will throw the block clear of contact with the support.
The frames B and A are connected together by suit-- able detachable connections, whereby they may be separated, and the log-frame removed, when the machine is to be used for felling trees, or for any other desired purpose.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentl l. The arrangement of the guides M M and springs m m, with relation to the guides Gand the saw,'whereby said guides M move independently of. each other, to press upon the log being sawed, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
2. The guides of a reciprocating saw, supported on an adj ustableoscillating plate or support, K, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3; vThe combination, with the plate K and the sawguides, of the lazy-tongs I, forthe purpose of connecting ther guides to the oscillating plate, and admitting of the rising and falling motion required by the saw in its passage through the log, substantially as' and for the purpose described.
4. The swinging-block support Q, arranged as described, in combination with the log-bed, substantially as and for the purpose described.
Witnesses: F. M. SCHAEFFER.
