Description

No. 840,982. PATENTED JAN. 8, 1907. W. W. WILLIAMS.

UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIoE. WILLIAM w. WILLIAMS, or CORTLAND, new YORK. I SANDPAPER-HOLPER. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ian. 8, 1907.
Application filed January 2,1906. Serial No. 294,193.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W.- WIL- LIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cortland, in the county of Cortland andv State of New York, have invented a new and useful Sandpaper-Holder, of which the fol object to provide improved meansfor retaining the sandpaper in position on the holder.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder comprising relatively stationary and movable clamping members, one of which is provided with an operating-handle which forms a pocket or compartment for the reception of a roll of sandpaper.
A further object is to form one end of the stationary clamping member with an angular extensionand the opposite end thereof with a curved or rounded portion, so that the device may be used for smoothing the walls of concavities and angular depressions or projections.
A still further ob'ect is to form the clamping members wit whereby said members are effectual ocked against accidental lateral displacement.
- With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arran ement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto ap ended, it being understood that various c anges in form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advanta es of this invention.
n the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sandpa' er-holder con- Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig.
6 is a perspective view'of the movable clampmg member detached, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the stationary clamping member or 7 base of the holder detached.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding'parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The improved device consists of a substantially rectangular body portion or stainteren'gaging 'lparts,
tionary clamping member 5 and a movable spring clamping memberfi, the latter having its central portion curved or bowed upwardly to form a transversely-disposed operatinghandle 7. The stationary member 5 is provided with a flat base 8 which forms a bearing-surface for a strip of sandpaper or other abrading material 9, one end of which is coiled into a roll 10 and seated in the pocket or magazine 11, formed by the handle 7.
One end of the stationary member 5 is bent upwardly to reduce an angular extension or lip 12, wine the opposite. end thereof is .curved upwardly at 13 and thence downwardly to form a depending lip 14, the strip of sandpaper being clamped between the lips 12 and .14 and corresponding lips 15 and 16, formed on the opposite ends of the movable clamping member 6. I
As a means for revent' accidental lateral displacement o the mem ers 5 and 6, the lower or stationary member 5-is formed with an upturned lug 17, adapted to engage a corresponding depression 18 in the adjacent face of the movable member 6.
In operation the roll of sandpaper is inserted in the pocket 11 and one end thereof assed between the lips 15 and 16 and thence beneath the bearing-surface 8 and over the lip or extension 12, eing clamped in engage- -ment with said lip by the lip 16 on the movable clamping member 6. When the exposed surface of the sandpaper has become worn, the latter may be severed and a fresh surface presented to the wood by releasing the clamping member '6 and drawing a fresh strg'ip from the roll across the bearing-surface an clamping the same in engagement with the lips 12 and 16, as shown.
Attention is called to the fact that the sprin clamping action of the sides of the hand e serves to retain the roll of sandpaper within the nal lips of t e movable member to yieldably engage the sand-paper and clamp the latter in en agement with the lips on the stationary mem er. It will also be observed that by having one end of the stationary clamping member disposed at an angle and the opposite end thereof curved the holdermay be conveniently used for smoothing and dish-'- ing the walls of curved and angular d sions orprojections.
To release themovable clamping member, it is merelynecessarv to grasp the stationary member and exerts-n inward pressure on the placket and also causes the termi- I epresside walls of the handle, when the two mem- I bers may be readily detached.
I claim- 1. A device of the class described, comprising relatively stationary and movable clamping members, one of which is rovided with- ,means for holding a roll of a rading material adapted to cover the exposed surface of the opposite member, and a lu formed on one member and engaging a epression in the adjacent member for reventing lateral displacement of said mem ers.
2. A device of the class described comprising relatively stationar and movable clarnping members, one of-w 'ch is rovided with means for holding a roll of a rading material adapted to cover the exposed surface of the posite member; said members being prov'i ed with interlocking parts.
3. A device of the class described comprising a stationary clamping member, and a movable spring clamping member rovided with a handle definin a pocket adapted to receive a roll of abra ing material, onee'nd of which is clamped between said members and covers the exposed face of the stationary member. Y 4, A device of the class described comprising relatively stationary and movable clamping members provided with terminal upwardly-extending lips, one of said members of which is provided with an an being provided with means for holding a roll of abrading material, the end of which covers the. exposed surface of the-o posite member and is. clamped in position b 'with said lips. v
5. A device of the class described, comprising relatively stationary and movable clampy engagement with corresponding'lips, and a stri of-abrad-- ing material covering the expose surface of the stationary clam ing member and interposed between said i s.
In testimony that claim the'foregoing as lip and with a my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in of two witnesses.
the presence WILLIAM W. WILLIAMS.
