SWING- Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented June 4, 1907.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, EVA B. APP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moorestown, in the county of Burlington, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains'to make and use the same.

This invention relates to swings and more particularly to portable swings, and has for its object to provide a swing of this class which will include a novel arrangement of parts permitting the swing to be folded when not in use, and which will also be so arranged to permit of adjustment of the swing to suit different conditions.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it is to he understood that 1 do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.

In the drawin s forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the present invention used in connection with Fig. 2 is a view showing the support used in connection with a hammock swing. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of one end of the top beam, taken transversely to show the engagement of the yoke in the top plate, and Fig. 4 is a sectional View of the top beam taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1 andshowingthe rope-connecting yoke in elevation.

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a frame including end portions 5 and Each end portion includes a top plate 7 having three legs 8, 9 and 10 hinged thereto at their upper ends, to form' a tripod, and the legs 9 and 10 are connected at their lower ends, by means of a centrally hinged brace 11, the two members of which are hinged to the lower ends of the legs 9 and 10 for upward movement to lie between these legs when they are moved toward each other.

The brace 11 has rods 1.2 detachably con nected therewith at opposite sides of its hinge, which is shown at 11, and these rods extend upwardly and outwardly for pivotal attachment to the legs 8.

A yoke 13 is provided for each plate 7 and has its legs engaged therein, with its bight 13 there below and nuts 14 are engaged withthe legs of the yokes above the plate 7 Hammock-receiving hooks 15 are carried by the bight 13 and depend therefrom.

The top beam 6 consists of two sections 16 and 17 hinged together at one end and in Fig. 1 these sections are shown folded against each other and engagedat their ends in the yokes 13, and removably engaged with the top beam between the end members 5, there are a pair of spaced yokes 18 located with their bight between the'top beam and with their legs passed through straps 19 disposed upon the top beam, nuts 20 being engaged with the legs above the straps. These yokes lie with the legs at opposite sides of the sections 16 and 17, holding the latter against any tendency to separate and, as will be seen, may be adjusted toward and awayfrom each other. Depending eyes 20 are carried by the bights of the yokes to receive a swingrope 21. I

It will be seen that thetop beam 6 may be disengaged from the position shown in Fig. 1, the two sections 16 and 17 moved into alinement with each other and their ends then engaged in the yokes 13 which will further separate the members 5, when a hammock may be engaged with the hooks 15. In view of the fact that the top beam 6 does not di rectly support the weight of a hammock thus engaged, it is not necessary that this beam be as strong when. the hammock is employed as when the swing is employed.
