CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1907.
Application filed November 16, 1906- Serial N0. 343,691-
To 0A7 whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY D. SHEAR and ULYSSES S. RHODABARGER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Mannington, in the county of Marion and State of W'est Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to clamps particularly designed for hoisting casing tools from wells into the derrick, preparatory to placing or pulling a casing from an oil or gas well.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a clamp which can be easily and quickly fastened to a casing line, thereby saving considerable time in view of the old manner in which casing tools were hoisted from a well. Heretofore an ordinary piece of rope has been employed for attaching the casing tools to a casing line this 0 eration being very dangerous on account 0 the expansion of the rope and the weight of the easing tools being withdrawn from a well.
A further object of this invention is to pro: vide a simple and inexpensive clamp, that can be easily and quickly attached to various tools or implements used in an Artesian or oil well, when it is necessary to withdraw or elevate the tools or implements from the well' W'ith these and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved clamp, Fig. 2 is a plan of the clamp, and Fig. 3 is an edge view partly in section, to show how the eye is swiveled in the body.
To put our invention into practice, we provide a body 1, substantially rectangular in form, and which is cut away on one edge, intermediate its ends, to form at one end of the block a rigid jaw 2, and at the other end of the block a bearing 3. This bearing is formed with an opening extending therethrough parallel with the longitudinal axis of clamp adjacent to the jaw 2.
the body, and in said opening is mounted a screw 5, the outer end of which has a handle 6, preferably T-shaped in form as shown, and on the inner end of which screw there is looselymounted a jaw 7,which coacts with the rigid jaw 2 of the body. The jaw 7 is loosely mounted on the screw by providing the latter near. its inner end with an annular groove 9 into which is received the inner end of a screw 10 projecting through the jaw 7 from the outer face thereof. The rigid jaw 2 is provided with a recess 4 on its inner face, and the face of the jaw 7 which confronts the recessed face of the jaw 2, is provided with a similar recess 8.
The C-shaped body portion 1 of our improved clamp is provided with an eye 11, said eye being swi veled at the corner of said Connecting with the eye 11 is an oblong link 12 to which a casing line (not shown) is attached when it is desired to elevate our improved clamp.
As shown, the shank of the eye 1 1 extends through the body of the clamp in a direction corresponding with the axial plane of the recesses 4 and 8. As said eye is located close to the recess 4, the weight stress, when the device is in use for hoisting purposes is on a line approximating the axis of the article being hoisted, so that the article is subjected to but slight, if any, torsional action, where it will not readily bind against the walls of the casing. Hence, liability to damage to the tool or article, either by torsional strain or abrading action due to contact of the article and the walls of the casing, is practically avoided.
The clamp is easily and quickly placed in engagement with a tool or implement, or even a rope or cable, by rotating the screw 5 until the jaw 7 engages'the object to be elevated, said object being firmly held within recesses 4 and 8 of the jaw 2 and the jaw 7 respectively.
The clamp is preferably made of strong and durable metal, and while we have herein described the clamp as being adapted for use in oil fields, it is obvious that the clamps may be readily used .for various other purposes not herein specified.
Such changes inthe details of construction, as are permissible by the appended claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
ters Patent, is
What I claim and desire to secure by Let- 1. In a hoisting means, a gripping clam adapted to be removably secured to the article to be hoisted, an eye swiveled in said clamp adjacent to the gripping jaws, the shank of said eye extending in a plane paral lel with the axis of the article being hoisted, and a link loosely mounted in said eye, whereby the weight stress will be on lines approximate the axis of the article being hoisted.
2. A clamp of the type described, comprislongitudinal axis of the block, a screw mounted in said threaded opening having a handle on its outer end, a jaw loosely-mounted on the inner end of said screw and lying in the recess in the block between the rigid jaw member and the bearing-member, said loosely-mounted jaw having a recess in its inner face, an eye swiveled in the block adj acent one corner thereof, the axis of the shank of the eye extending in a plane parallel with the axis of the article being carried by the clamp and an oblong link carried in said eye.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
