Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLAN H. Jones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horn-Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
' clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this-specification.
The objects of this invention are to provide for phonographs a horn support of reduced cost of construc tion; to enable the support to be compactly folded and packed for purposes of transmission, and the like;
to secure a firm and rigid support for the horn; to provide a device which will be neat and sightly when on the phonograph in connection with a horn; to utilize more fully the device already on the phonograph case,
' in connection with the horn supporting devices, and -to secure-other advantages and results, some of which may be hereinafter referred to in connection with the description of the working parts.
The invention consists in the improved horn sup port, and in the arrangements and combinations of parts of the same, all substantially as will be hereinafter set forth and finally embraced in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved support in connection with a phonograph and horn; Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken at line :12, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side elevation on larger scale of my improvements, the box being shown in outline, and Fig. 4 is a plan of the same, the box being indicated in full lines.
In said drawings, 5 indicates an ordinary phonograph box or case having the usual sound reproducing devices, including the speaker 6 and flexible connection 7, with the horn 8 in any ordinary form.
9 indicates the vertical post of the horn support.
10 is a horizontal or approximately horizontal arm which extends from the top or upper part of said post to or near to the large end of the horn where it receives a suitable suspensory attachment, such as a chain 11, connecting with an eye 12, fastened to said horn. The said arm 10, is braced in its horizontal position by the rod 13, the said parts being pivotally or otherwise adjustably connected in any ordinary manner, whereby they may fold together compactly for purposes of transmission.
The vertical rod or post 9, is supported in its upright position by a member 14, in which inhere the more particular features of my improvements. Said member 14 is adapted to rest upon the top board of the phonograph box 5, and be held rigidly and firmly thereon by parts or devices already commonly found on such boxes, the said devices originally intended for other purposes being utilized for the new purpose of attaching the member 14 of the support to the box, as will be hereinafter more fully detailed. At or near one end of said member 14, the same has a hook-shaped part 15, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, said hook-shaped part being adapted to reach down over the side of the box and catch under the upper molding thereof formed by the projecting edge 16 of the top board. The said member 14 is a strip of metal, preferably cast, and at its end opposite the hook 15, is provided with an upwardly extending finger piece 21, adapted to receive the fingers and facilitate removal of the member from the box. Intermediate of its said ends, the member 14, has a downwardly extending projection 23, which is adapted to enter the slot 26, such as is commonly found in talking-machine boxes to receive the coverhasp for fastening said cover in place. The said projection 23, is preferably apertured or slotted, as at 24, so as to form a hasp to receive the tongue of a locking lever 25, such as is commonly pivoted on the box, as at 26, and employed to secure the cover to said box when in place thereon. By my invention, the said locking lever 25 serves the double purpose of holding the cover in place when it is on the box. and more effectually securing the horn support in position when the said" cover is removed and the talking machine being operated. I have shown the said member 14, provided at its upper side and between the projection 23 and hook 15, with an integral stud 17, which is preferably hollow and forms a socket or seat to receive and hold in position the post 9 before described. The said post 9, is held firmly against withdrawal from said hollow stud by means of a set screw 18, or'other suitable clamping means. The stud 17, is preferably formed by casting the same integral with the member 14, the two being held strongly in angular relation by a bracing web 19. Said stud is also provided at one side with an arm 20, which extends horizontally from said stud in a direction lengthwise of the phonograph box or top board thereof, as shown in Fig. 4, and rests on said top board so as to avoid more effectually loose movement of the horn support on the talking machine box. By the arrangement illustrated, of the stud 17 on the member- 14, said member becomes the base piece of the horn support, and may be so termed. The stud 17, is preferably a hollow socket to receive the solid rod 9, but should said rod be of a common tubular construction, said stud 17, may be changed in construction to suit. In operating the device, the member 14, on removal of the cover of the box or case, is hooked over the edge of the box, its projection inserted in the cover-holding slot of the same, which it fits nicely, and the member pressed firmly down upon the top board of the box. The post 9 and arm 10 are then adjusted, and if the member 14 has been hooked over the rear side of the talking machine box and the arm 10 extends forwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, the horn will be properly supported. For greater security, however, or to provide against other positions of the post 9 and arm 10, it is desirable to swing the locking lever 25, just as in fastening on the cover, so that its tongue enters the aperture 24 of the slot projection on the base piece and holds it fixed.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is:
1. The improved horn support in which is combined with the post and horizontally extending arm, a member having means to receive the said post and hold the same vertically in place and having a hook to hook over the edge of the top board of the phonograph box, and at the end opposite said hook having a finger piece, and intermediaie of said hook and finger piece having a projection adapted to enter the cover-holding slot of the top board.
2. In combination with the phonograph box and horn, said box having cover fastening means attached thereto adapted to engage the cooperating fastening means of a 'cover and hold said cover on the box, of a horn support resting on said box and having means extending into engagement with said cover fastening means and holding said horn support on said box, the said cover fastening means serviceable both to hold the cover on the box and on the removal of the cover to hold the horn support thereon.
In a horn support, a base piece having a stud and means for fixing the post of said support thereto, a hook extending from said base piece to engage the phonograph box, and an apertured hasp also extending from said base ,piece to engage the cover fastening means on said box.
4. The improved base piece for a horn support for a phonograph box, having a stud and means for fixing the horn supporting post thereto and having a depending slotted hasp adapted to enter into fixed engagement with the cover holding tongue of the said box.
5. The improved base piece for a horn support for a phonograph box, having a hollow stud projecting upward therefrom and means for fixing a horn supporting post therein and having a hook to engage an edge of the said box and an apertured hasp to enter into engagement with the cover holding tongue on said box.
6. The improved base piece for a horn support for a phonograph box, having a hollow stud extending upward therefrom and :1 depending slotted hasp adapted to receive the cover-holding tongue of said phonograph case, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
7. The improved base piece for a horn support for a phonograph box, having a stud projecting upward therefrom and adapted to hold the horn supporting post, said stud having a lateral bracing finger extending horizontally from said stud, said base piece also having a hook to engage an edge of the box and an apertured hasp depending therefrom to receive the cover-holding tongue of said box.
8. The combination with the box of a phonograph, said box being provided with a hasp slot, of a horn support provided with a hasp adapted to be passed downwardly through said slot, said hasp being adapted at its lower end to receive a locking tongue.
9. A horn support for a phonograph box, said horn support being provided with a base piece and means for fixing a supporting device thereto and being also provided with a depending slotted hasp adapted to be engaged by the cover holding tongue of said box.
10. In combination with the horn and box of a phone-- graph, said box being provided with cover fastening means to hold said cover on said box, a horn support restingon said box and having fastening means adapted to engage said cover fastening means and to hold said support on said box, said cover fastening means being serviceable both to hold the cover on the box and on the removal of the cover to hold the horn support thereon.
11. In combination with the phonograph box having a hasp slot and holding tongue, of a horn support having a hasp to enter said slot and receive said tongue.
12. In a horn support, a base piece having a stud and means for fixing the post of the support thereto, a hook extending from said base piece to engage the phonograph box, and a projection also extending from said base piece to enter the cover-holding slot of said box.
3. In a horn support, the combination with the post and horn arm, of a member having means to receive said post and hold the same vertically in place, a lateral bracing finger extending horizontally from said member, a hook-like part on said member adapted to engage an edge of a talking machine box, and a projection depending from said member to enter the cover holding slot of said box.
14. A horn support having in combination a member adapted to overlie the top-board of a talking machine, a projection upon said member adapted to enter a coverholding slot of said top board, means for holding said projection in said slot, and horn supporting means coacting with said member to support an amplifying horn.
15. A horn support having in combination a member adapted to overlie the topboard of a talking machine, a flattened projection upon said member adapted to enter a cover-holding slot of said top board, horn supporting means coacting with said member to support an amplifying horn, and means adapted to prevent the disengagement of said projection from said slot by the weight of the horn.
16. A horn support comprising in combination a member adapted to rest on the top board of a talking machine and positively engage said board at one of its cover-holding 'slots and one of its edges, an upright post held by said member, and a horn supporting arm on said post.
17. A horn support comprising in combination a member adapted to overlie the top board of a talking machine box, a projection upon said member adapted to enter a coverholding slot of said top board, a hook on said member adapted to hook over an upper edge of.the box, and horn supporting means held by said member.
18. A horn support comprising in combination a member adapted to overlie the top board of a talking machine box, a projection upon said member adapted to fit a cover-holding slot of said top board, a hook on said member adapted to hook over an upper edge of the box, and horn supporting means held by said member.
19. A horn support comprising in combination a member adapted to overlie the top-board of a talking machine box, a projection upon said member adapted to enter a coverholding slot of said topboard, means in connectionwith said member for engaging another part of the box in opposition to the disengagement of said projection from said slot, a horn-supporting post held by said member, and an arm on said post.
20. A horn support having in combination a member adapted to rest on the topboard of a talking machine, a projection upon said member adapted to enter a coverholding slot of said top-board and being apertured to re ceive the locking tongue of said box, and horn supportin means held by said member.
