VETERINARY DENTAL INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1907.
Application filed November 30, 1906. Serial No. 345,742.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK P. Wnnts, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olarinda, in the county of Page and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Surgical Instrument, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to surgical instruments and more particularly to devices for removing growths from the gums and for various similar purposes.
The object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction of this class of devices, and to provide an instrument which can be easily manipulated and which can be taken apart for the purpose of cleaning the same.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
In said drawings:Figure 1 is a perspective view of the instrument; Fig. 2 is anenlarged longitudinal section through one of the jaws thereof and showing the detachable blade in section; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the blade.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 in one face thereof, and extending from this recessed portion is a bowed jaw 3 terminating in a rounded end 4 having an opening 5 therein. The faces of this end are flat and one of them is adapted to extend under and contact with the circular base 6 of a semi-cylindrical knife 7. The base (i has a central opening 8 having screw threads therein adapted to be engaged by a screw 9, also insertible through the opening 5. Obviously, by means of this screw 9, the knife 7 can be rigidly secured to the jaw 23, which extends between the ends of the blade as shown.
Cooperating with the shank 1 is another shank'lO having a recessed portion 11 adapted to fit within the recess 2. This recessed portion 11 has a transverse slot 12 to receive a pivot stud or screw 13 disposed within the recess 2. A jaw 14 is formed integral with the shank 10 and has an enlarged rounded end 15, preferably very thin, and constituting an anvil or backing plate with which the knife 7 is adapted to cooperate.
In using the instrument herein described, the blade 7 is first secured to the jaw 3 by tightening the screw 9. The thin anvil or backing plate 15 is then placed at one side of the growth to be removed, after which the two shanks are drawn toward each other. The blade 7 will therefore be brought into contact with the growth and will cut therethrough until stopped by its contact with the plate 15. Should it be desired to detach the shanks for the purpose of cleaning the parts, it is merely necessary to swing the shanks away from each other so that the recessed portions will be disposed substantially at right angles to each other, whereupon the slotted portion of the shank 1.0 can be withdrawn from engagement with the stud 13.
It will be seen that this instrument constitutes a very simple, durable and efficient device for the purposes intended, and by providing the semicylindrical knife the device can be adapted for removing third molars, growths of different kinds in various positions upon the gums, etc.
The preferred form of the invention has been set forth in the foregoing description, but I do not limit myself thereto as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isz- An instrument of the character described comprising interlocking pivotally connected shanks having converging end portions, one of said portions having a thin enlargement constituting an anvil, one end of the other shank being rounded, and a cutting device detachably secured to said rounded portion and comprising a circular base having a central aperture, means extending through the. aperture and through the rounded portion 01 the shank for detachably securing the base upon the shank, and a bowed knife integral with the base and extending from the periphery thereof, said knife lapping the edge of the rounded portion and having a straight cutting edge disposed to bear upon the anvil.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.

Correction in Letters Patent No. 865
It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 865,551, granted September 10, 1907,
of Olarinda, Iowa, the title of the invenupon the application of Frederick P. Wells,
tion was erroneously written and printed Veterinary Dental Instruments, Whereas the said title should have been ritten and printed Surgical Instruments; and that the i said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the ease in the Patent Office.
