WILLIAM T. JOHNSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
RETURN -ENVELOIR Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 190'?.
.ippiimin inea November so, 1906. serial No. 345,770.
To all whom it may concern:
of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Return-Envelops, of which the following is a spepica tion, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates especially to means for sending a written or printed communication and providing means for replying to such lcommunication upon one and the same folder or envelop, and has for its object l the provision of a simple and effective device for such' purposes.
To attain the desired end, my invention consists essentially in a body of paper, or the equivalent, having at each extremity a -sealing flap, said body being arranged to fold and seal in such manner as to provide a surface for addressing, leaving the inner face of the body free for written or printed matter, and adapted to i be folded in the 'opposite direction, inclosing the original address and exposing a return address surface; my invention also involves certain other novel and useful combinations or arrangements of parts, and peculiarities of construction and operation, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
`In lthe accompanying drawing, Figure l is an outside view of an envelop or folder embodying my invention, and Figf2 is a reverse view thereof. Fig. 3, is an outside view of a modification of the arrangement illus- ,trated in Figs. 1 and 2, and Fig. 4 is a reverse view of the envelop shown in Fig. 3.
Like numerals of reference wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in all4 the figures.
l is the body of the envelop or folder made of any approved material.
2 are the sealing flaps which may be gummed as at 3, Fig. 2 at both extremities of the body 1, or one portion of the folder, being a return sealing flap, may be gummed on three edges, as at 4. A
In Fig. 2 is shown a coin-card 5, as secured to one of the faces of the body l, and in Fig. 4 an inclosing envelop 6 is shown as secured to the return sealing fiap,
' `or placed on any other division of the folder without Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. JOHNSON, a citizenI In using my invention, printed matter or writing is.
placed on the spaces a and c of Fig. 2, and on the spaces a, b and d of Fig. 4. In folding the envelop illustrated in Figs. l and 2, for the original mailing, the flap 2 next the part c is first folded in, then c is folded over b, b over a, and the second flap 2 sealed over b. When the envelop reaches the addressee the sealed flap is cut, leaving the printed or written matter intact and open to inspection. If the envelop is to be returned, coin, or stamps or any other article it is desired to send is sealed within the receptacle 5, or a receptacle like 6,
- if used instead of the coin-card, and the envelop is closed by first folding in the parts a onto b, b onto c, and the unsued sealing flap 2 is caused to adhere to the outside of b leaving the return address 7 exposed, and both usings are accomplished without removing any portion of the material of the envelop.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 the folding both for the original ,sending and return are accomplished in the above described manner, the part a giving more space for printing or writing, and requiring one more folding of the body in preparing the envelop for mailing. The receptacle may be separately sealed, with its contents, and instead of having the sealing flap 2, gummed only at 3, as shown on Figs. l and 2 the part c is sealed on three of its edges at 4 to the part d.
By my invention I provide a mailing and return envelop which, as already set forth, is opened without removing any portion of the body. A space for printing or writing is provided which is within the envelop when folded in either direction, and an inclosed receptacle is also provided for the reception of coin or stamps in either' sending or returning, or both.
Having now fully described my invention, what I Patent is: 1
'1. A device of the character herein specified in which is comprised an oblong, straight-sided, un-cut body of paper, having at each extremity a sealing ap, said body beingr arranged to fold and seal in such a manner as to provide a surface for addressing, leaving the inner face of the body free for written or printed matter, and adapted to be folded in the opposite direction, inclosng the original address and exposing a return address surface, in combination with an inclosing receptacle xed to the body of the envelop and adapted to'be nclosed therein, substantially as shown and described.
2. A return. envelop in .which is comprised an oblong on three of its sides, and an inclosing receptacle fixed to 10 body of paper, having the sides straight and 11n-cut; a sealthe body of the envelop substantially as shown and deing flap at one extremity arranged to seal at one edge only, scribed. and a sealing flap at the other extremity arranged to seal In testimony whereof I hereto aix my signature in on three sides, substantially as shown and described. presence of two witnesses;
3. A return envelop in which is comprised an oblong WILLIAM T. JOHNSON. body of paper, having the sides straight and un-cut; a yWitnesses: sealing iap at one extremity arranged to seal at one edge AL. H. GRAHAM,
only; a sealing ap at the other extremity arranged to seal v A. M. PIERCE.
