BABYS STOCKING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed August 21. 1906- Serial No. 331.525-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUISA E. IRWIN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of London, in the county of Middlesex, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and useful Babys Stocking, of which-the following is a specification.
This invention relates to coverings for the feet and the lower part of the legs of a baby. And in its simplified form this invention consists essentially of a stocking the body portion and a leg portion, and a flexible band encircling, or extending around the foot portion, crossed at the instep and en circling or extending around the leg portion. To this it is proposed to add a loop on the underside of the foot portion and a loop on the rear of theleg portion, but a single loop may be used at either position, for more positively holding the flexible band in place under certain circumstances. Though the stocking owing to its contour, together with the flexible band encircling or extending around the foot and leg portions and crossed at the instep, will answer all purposes, and be effective in the holding of the stocking in place, it is obvious that various contingencies and conditions may confront the user and the addition of these loops at the rear of the leg portion and at the bottom of the foot portion are to meet these contingencies. The stocking with the flexible band will be ractically sufficient, and the addition of the oops to the stocking are used simply from a precautionary standpoint, to meet the case where loose stockings are used, or in the case of fat babies, or where babies rub their feet together, and on whom it is almost impossible, under ordinary circumstances, to keep the flexible bands in place or the stockings on their feet, or lower part of their legs. All of which will be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a view of a stocking embodying my invention.
In the accompanying drawings ;the numeral 10 designates a babys stocking, and, a, the leg portion, and, b, thefoot portion thereof.
of which is formed with a foot secured together at the front of the leg portion, a, as shown at, g; and said flexible band is shown as encircling or extending around the foot portion, 6, of the stocking once, and the leg portion, at, twice, but it may extend around saidfoot and said leg portions of said stocking one or any number of times, and its ends secured together, at any point at the front, rear or side of the leg portion or at the top, bottom or side of the foot portion.
The loops 11 and 12 will be effective in holding the flexible band 13 in place against any possibility of it becoming disengaged from the stocking, in the case of loose stockings or in the case of fat babies, or in the case where babies rub the sides of their feet together, and on whom under ordinary circumstances it is almost impossible to keep the stockings on their feet or on the lower part of their legs.
The practical advantages of a stocking constructed substantially as shown and described are ;-that it may be readily and easily secured in place, and when secured in place, will be securely held against any possibility of becoming accidentally kicked, or rubbed off or otherwise disengaged from the foot of the wearer, one when secured in place will be easy and comfortable on the wearer as the flexible band is free to move lengthwise throughout its whole length and will give with each movement of the foot, at the same time by untying the ends of the flexible band the stocking may be readily and easily removed; and one also that will be'simple,
durable and inexpensive to supply.
Having thus described my invention, I claim As a new article of manufacture, a stocking embodying a leg ortion and a foot portion, a keeper carried y the leg portion adjacent the juncture of the latter with the foot por- In testimony whereof, I have signed in the tion, a keeper carried by the bottom of the presence of the two undersigned Witnesses. foot portion substantially midway between V the ends of said foot portion, and a flexible LOUISA IRWIN band passed through said loops and Wrapped WVitnesses:
around the foot portion and leg portion of P. J. EDMUNDs,
the stocking. G. PETRIE.
