surfaces for receiving the impressions, such surfaces being disposed a distance apart corresponding to desired spaces between type linesof an ordinary printing or impression ilate.
i Before proceeding with a more detailed description it may bestated that in the practice of my invention I provide a base upon which is erected a suitable support for the several operative elements of which my improved machine is constituted, and in said support is mounted a shaft upon which is held a wheel or carrier for the impression dies'which may be organized circumferentially about such wheel or carrier in different series. Also held or supported upon the shaft is a turret or other suitable member which is engaged by a device on the machine so as to prevent accidental displacement of said shaft and carrier between the operations*y of impressing materials; and said device also. engagessaid turret member to steady thev shaft and carriei while thedies are being operated upon to veHect the impressions. I employ a special construction of die carrier; and have illustrated a specially constructed hand operated striker or presser device for acting upon vthe heads of the dies to cause the latter to enter or be projected'into the mate rial operated upon. Said striker or presser device is shown mounted upon a shaft located substantially at right angles to the carrier shaft, and the striker isprovided with suitable means whereby on proper manipulation thereof disengagement of the turret member may be effected either to adjust the shaft axially or longitudinali or both', ac-
f case printin type, another lower case type, 45.
cording to the particular sty e or character of impressions to be made. The action of the said striker or presser device is positive and direct, and it may be stated that the impression dies' are preferably organized in three series, one series representing upper and thethir .punctuating marks or symbols; and, accordingly asimpressions are to be made or taken from the dies of one of saidl series or the other the carrier shaft is adjustedlengthwise in one direction or the other to bring the particular series desired in i proper position with respect tothe striker or actuating presser device for the dies.
' The turret member is constructed to be effectively engaged at three differentpositions to Which the carrier shaft may be moved to shift the position of the die-carrier,
and, as hereinafter specifically pointed out ,theprecision and accuracy of operationof .of-series of impression dies may be lessened Las'.
my improved machine will be apparent.
vItis of; course understoodthat the number or increased, as may be desired, and also that ythe dies themselves'may be constructed and operated in any suitable way.
j In operation the striker is first manipulated A.to release engagement of the turret member by the engaging or locking device therefor, and then the shaft is moved longitudinally in one direction or the other to bring a particular series of dies in line to be struck or engaged by the striker, whereupon said shaft is the'n partially rotated upon its longer airis to bring the particular die desired V which normally constitutes a'suspensory forv s'aid device to maintain the same in operative position without im osing its Weight upon any of the dies. T e dies are disposed in radial directions about the circumference of the carrier therefor, and the .latter is practically an open ended shell into which the effective portion of the striker or presser device extends to properly engage said'dies.v
I am enabled by my special construction of machine to use a single die-wheel or carrier having a large number of dies'thereon, in
lieu -of a plurality of wheels or carriers as? hitherto employed in some instances.
' Specific reference being had to the accoin- 4 panying drawings by the designating characters marked thereon, A, represents`a suitable base or bed of an ordinary supporting frame of any kin/d which may, if desired, be formed or,provided with suitable supporting legs a, at the corners or other parts thereof. Formed with or erected upon said base or bed, preferably at or near one end, is an upright 1, having Aan over-hanging arm B, rising to a suitable height and extending over so that the inner pendent extremity 2, thereof occupies a position substantially in line with the center or middle portion of said base or bed, the said pendent extremity of the said arm and the upper part of the said upright 1, being formed with coinciding bores 3, 4, to constitute bearings for a shaft C, extending longitudinally of the machine, and which is capable of both rotary and lengthwise motion within said bearings. Fastenedto said shaft at the inner end, by means of a pin 5, or other suitable device, is the hub 6, of a die-wheel or carrierD, which partakes of the motions of theshaft, and which is substantially a circular shell open at the outer end and formed in its circumference with three (more or less) series of openings 7,-8, 9,
through which ,pass the stems 10, of suitable impression dies 12,'said stems beingheaded at 13, on their inner-ends, and provided with springs 14 having their bearings between such heads find the intim' oirC-umlforciuifo of the said whctl or nrrior. ln tho prvsnnt instance tho dirs working in ihn serios oi' openings 7, may represent uppir mist typo of the iilpnnliot, those in ihr serios S, lowtry vided with :i milla-d hond niionl nl tlu ontltl'iereof distnnt from thix dinfnhool or t-nrrtvr, y `sind the inward mori-mont thv limited by contant or ong of-tlio huh t5, with the ndjzit'ont nico portion of tho overhnnging :firm l. l lovin its. lat-orf ings in the inner ptndun txirsmni ol' said overlninging arm l, und prtltrzihlg." locati-#d nonelith slmft (il, and snhstrmtinlijf ai. righiy :inglos thrrmo, i nnothor :ind shortvr shaft E, upon the @nds oi wnit'h :iro monnttjd and secured at. l5, l5, st xitniilrt. By moving or turning the striker or presser device upwardly on its axis or support, the
upper edge of the pawl will be engaged by a rod 45, supported by and extending between two arms 46, 46, extending inwardly from the collars 16, 16, at the lower ends or extremities of the side portions or members 17, 17, of the said rocking frame G, and thus will the said pawl be carried downwardly against the tendency of its holding spring. By holding the said pawl out of engagement with the said turret, the latter and die-wheel or carrier may be shifted and turned to any desired position through the proper manipulation of shaft (l, asis apparent whereupon as soon as proper change of position of the dies has been effected the said turret will become again engaged on allowing the striker or presser device to drop to the position at which it is normally held by the suspensory device therefor. f
Mounted upon the base or bed of the machine is a carriage N, having longitudinal movement on suitable guides n., n', therefor formed on the underside of the carriage; and said carriage is provided w-ith any suitable feed device for moving the same back and forth beneath the dies, consisting preferably, in the present instance, of a threaded nut 60, having a stem 61, screwing into the carriage, and working in said nut is a feed screw N 2 having its bearings on the base or bed at 61 and 62, said screw being provided at its outer 'fend with 4an operating handle N3.
The said guide n `is rovided with a wear plate 63, against whic one side of the carriage works, said late adapted to be forced or pressed inwardllly by means of screws such.as 64, to take up or compensate for any looseness of the carriage produced from wear between the ,sides thereof and said guides.
The sides of the carriage N are grooved and beveled inwardly,` as shown, so Aas to form tongues 66, 66, which are received in correspending grooves formed on the inner surfaces of the side portions of a slide S, which is movable transversely of said carriage ib'y means of a feed screw 67, having an operating handle 68, and working in a threaded nut 69 secured to the underside of said slide, as
shown in Fig. -lt The matrix of; papier mch or other suitable material receiving the impression is held upon the upper surface of the said slide S, by means of strips 7-0, secured to ledges 71 at opposite edges of -the slide and projecting over said matrix, also asV clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The organization and operation of :the dies are more clearly indicated in'Figs. 5 and 6, and 8, 9, while Figs. 7 .and 410, indicate portions of materials 'or matrices 80, vand 8l, as
they appear after having been impressed byA the dies in Figs. 5 and 8, respectively'. In l Fig. 7, the impressions are in intaglio, and in Fig. 10, they are in cameo or relief. The latter ffigure shows a material or matrix having raised parallel surface portions 82, disposed a distance apart corresponding to the desired distance between lines of an ordinary printing or'impressinn plate; and said figure also shows displaced portions S3 of the material, which are subsequently trimmed offin proper manner, as will be understood.
During the operations of the machine, the disengagement ofthe turret member is effected at any ltime desired, and in the manner already explained, and then. the die-wheel by means of the shaft C, to bring the desired series and dye of that series into proper position for operation.
