Description

No. 892,149. PATENTED JUNE 30, 1908. A. B. GOULD.
GARMENT SUPPORTBR.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. '1, 190a.

ALBERT E. GOULD, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
GARMENT-SUPPORTEB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, 1908.
Application filed January 7,1908. Serial No. 409,642.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. GOULD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing -at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful I-m rovements in Garment-Supports; and I do erebydeclare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art-to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to im rovements in garment supports, and its ob ect is to provide the same with means whereby the device may be adjusted to garments of various sizes and to provide the same with various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1. is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2. an inverted plan View of the upper partof the same, the
orizontal rod and clips being removed; Fig. 3. an enlarged transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.;Fig. 4. the same on the line 4'4 of Fig. 1.; Fig. 5. the same on the line 55 of Fig. 1.; and Fig. 6. a longitudinal vertical section on the line 6 -6 of Fig. 2.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
1 re resents a flat stri of metal curved upwar at its middle an extending diagonally outward and downward therefrom in opposite direction and having'its ends attached to a horizontal stay rod 2. On the respective ends of this flat strip 1 are adjustably supported shoulder pads 3, concavoconvex m form and made of stamped sheet metal. These pads are raised somewhat above the strip 1 and are slidable thereon being connected to the same by shanks 3 engagim the upper surface of the strip 1 and having lateral extensions 4 adjacent to the ads and folded around the strip. A similar ateral extension 5 is also provided at the upper end of the shank, this extension being provided with a resilient extension 6 yield ably and slidably enga ing the under side of the strip 1 to yielding y hold the shoulder ad in adjustment on the strip, and permit of its being adjusted thereon.
For convenient adjustment of the pad, a downwardly extended thumb piece 7 projects from the lateral extension 5. To suswardly bent at the m1 pend a garment from therod 2, tubular spring members 8 longitudinally divided at the bottom are secured at the top to the rod 2 near the'respective ends thereof, within which springs are upwardly extending and diverging clamps 9, which are recessed at their lower ends to receive the edges of the springs 8 and to yieldingly grasp the garment placed therebetween. These clamps extend upward and diverge at the respective sides of the rod 2 and are provided with thumb ieces forming levers 10 extending above t 1e springs 8 whereby the clamps may be separated at the bottom by pressing these thumb pieces toward each other, as oocasion requires.
The device is suspended from any suitable support by means of a hook '13 pivoted to the middle of the strip 1 by means of a clip 11. Between the pivot and the hook 13 is a rear-wardly curved connecting member 12 to receive and accommodate the collar of the garment placed on the device.
The device is readily adjusted to fit garments of various widths of shoulders by slidin the pads 3 on the strip and are frictionally held in adjusted position by the sp ring mem bers 6.
VVhIat I claim is: fl
1. n a arment su orter, a r at stri u g l dle, a tie rod con ec ting the ends of said strip, shoulder pads having a shank slidably engaging the stri ,lateral extensions on said shank and folder around the strip and a resilient extension on one of said lateral extensions engaging the strip 0pposite the shank.
2. In a garment sup orter, a flat strip upwardly bent at the middle and having oppositely extended and downwardly inclined ends, a shoulder pad having a shank slidably engaging the upper side of the stri and two opposite lateral extensions folde beneath 'said stri a third lateral extension on said shank a so folded beneath said strip, and a resilient extension on said last named lateral extension and engaging the under side of the strip. A
3. In a garment sup orter, a flat strip upwardly bent at the m1d dle, a tie rod connectin the ends of the strip, shoulder pads slidab e on the strip, springs attached to the pads and slidably engaging the strip, a tubular spring attached to the rod at the to and longitudmally divided at the bottom, 0 amps be tweenthe divided edges of the spring and extending upward through the same to form thumb pieces to open the clamps. I
4. In a garment sup orter, a flat strip upwardly bent at'the mi dle, a 'hook pivotal attached to the middle of said stri by means of a clip, shoulder pads having s anks slidably engagin the upper side of the said stri springs attac ed to the shanks and slidab y engaging the under side. of said strip, a rod connecting the ends of said strip, tubular springs each attached to the rod at its upper side and longitudinally divided at its lower side, and a pair of clamps embraced by each of said springs and extending upward through 15 ALBERT E. GOULD.
