CUFF-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, STEPHEN CHAMPLIN DURHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reed City, in the county of Osceola and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in cuff holders, and my object is to provide means for holding the cuff in position on. the sleeve of a shirt.

A further object is to provide means to readily and quickly secure the holder into engagement with the sleeve and cuff, and a still further object is to provide means for securing the parts of the holder in its closed position.

Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cuff and portion of a sleeve, showing my improved holder secured. thereto. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the holder removed from the end and sleeve. Fig. 3 is a sectional view as seen on line 33 Fig. 2,.and, Fig. 4 is a sectional View on an enlarged scale, as seen on line 4- 4, Fig. 3.

Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the sleeve of a shirt, or like garment, which is constructed in the usual manner and provided with a re-inforcing strip 2, and 3 indicates the usual form of wrist band formed at'the end of the sleeve.

It has been the practice heretofore to insert a button through the wrist band and secure the cuff 4 thereto, but the button holes 5 soon become worn and broken by inserting the button therethrough, so that the cuff will not remain upon the button, and it has also been found that it requires a great deal of time to attach the cuff, and to .this end, therefore, I provide my improved form of cuff holder 6, which consists of a pair of parallel plates 7 and 8, the plate 7 forming the body portion of the holder, while the plate 8 forms the gripping portion thereof. which is at right angles to the longitudinal plane of the plate 7. The plate'8 is fixed to the plate 7 by means of rivets, or the like, 10, and the ends of the plate 8 are curved outwardly, so that the same will have-a spring action when the ends thereof are moved towards the plate 7, and the ends of the plate 8 are also provided with extensions 11, which are at right angles to the longitudinal plane of the plate 8, and extended toward the plate 7, the plate 8 being of sufficient length to allow the extensions 11 to freely pass to the outside of the extensions 9, so that the extensions 9 will engage the face of the plate 8 at a point between the rivets 10 and the ends of the plate 8. The plate 8 is provided with a bent portion 12, so that the meeting edges of the cuff will readily enter between the two plates, and in order to readily direct the ends of the plate 8 in engagement with the plate 7, I provide loops 13 and 14, which are formed by directing single strips of metal around the plates 7 and 8, the severed edges of the strips meeting at the rear of the plate 7, while the central portions of the strips are curved outwardly to form handles 15 and 16 respectively, said handles extending outwardly from the loops, so that they can be readily grasped and the loops moved longitudinally on the plates, and it will readily be seen that by having the ends of the plate 8 curvedoutwardly, when the loops are moved towards the outer ends of the plates, the extensions on said plates will be brought together.

In order to positively hold the loops in their adjusted position, I provide a rib 17 at one end of the loops 13 and 14, which are adapted to engage notches 18 in the outer face of the plate 7 ,the tension of the plate 8 serving to hold the ribs in engagement with the notches.

In applying the holder to use, a fold is made in the reinforcing strip 2 and entered between one end of the plates 7 and 8 when by directing the loop 14 towards the ends of the plates, the extensions 9 and 11 will be brought towards each other and the fold of the reinforcing strip positively engaged between the extensions. The cuff 4 is then inserted over the hand, and the extensions 9 and 11 at the opposite end of the plates 7 and 8 directed through the button holes 5 in the cuff, this result being accomplished by directing the loop 13 towards the ends of the plates 7 and 8.

In releasing the ends of the plates so as to remove the cuff, the handles 15 and 16 are grasped and the loops slightly rocked to release the ribs from the notches 18 when the loops are moved inwardly on the plates, thus allowing the ends of the plate 8 to move away from the plate 7 and release the parts engaged thereby.

While I have shown the holder as applied to use for holding a cuff in position, it will readily be seen that the same can be used for various purposes, such as shortening the sleeve and holding other parts of the garments, and it will also be seen that I have provided a very cheap and efficient form of holder, and one that can be readily and quickly a plied to use.

What I claim is A device as described, comprising two connected together clasp-members, each in a continuous piece and having at its ends in- I wardly extending right-angled terminals and standing divergently apart at said ends, one of said clasp-members being offset to space the same ofit' from the opposite portion of the companion clasp-member to provide for re ceiving a cuff-edge, both of said clasp-members being equipped with transverse notches u on opposite sides of the center of said c asp-members, and slidable loops arranged upon said clasp members and having inwardly projecting ribs at one edge thereof for engaging said transverse notches.
