ALBUM FOR FLAT TALKING-MACHINE RECORDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 10, 1908.
Application filed June 13, 1908. Serial No. 438,380.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. Rosen- THAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Albums for Flat Talking-Machine Records, of which the following 1s a specification.
My invention relates to albums, and has for its object the storage, for convenient access thereto, of fiat records for talking machines.
My invention consists in a series of pockets, each pocket being provided with a label disclosing opening, and the pockets being in groups of two, each with its label disclosing o cning presented oppositely from the label disclosing opening of the other in the group. each group of pockets constituting a unit, and a flexible binding, whereby the units constituted by the groups of pockets are hinged together, as well as in the parts and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed;
In the drawing, which serves to illustrate my invention: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved. album in open position.-
Fig. 2 is a bottom edge view of same. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the soli .l back of one of the poclgcts. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the front of oi'ae of the pockets. Fig. 5 is a cross sectional View, enlarged, of part of the album in closed position, better illustrating the construction of the flexible binding. Fig. 6. is a rear elevation of the album, illustrating the index .holler thereof. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the index hol ler.
Ah illustrated, my improved albinn comprises six groups of pockets, each constituting a unit 1, hinged togetl'icr by the flexible binding 2, which binding 2 is secured to the covers 3, and which covers 3 are joined by the back 4 of the album.
Each of the cnvclops constituting the units 1 is rovided with a label disclosing opening 5 t irough which the label of the flat i talking machine -.rccord 6 may be readily seen. The envelop is also provided with a slot 7 at its top, where it opcns, to afford convenient access to the record for 'witl'ldrawing it from the pocket.
Each of the pockets is composed of a solid back 8 and a front 9 which is provided with the label disclosing openin r 5 and the slot 7. Thisfront 9 isalso proviilcd with flaps 10 and is so formed relative to the solid back 8 that the flaps will fold around the edges of the solid back 8 and maybe secured thereto,
producing the pocket in such form that three of its sides are closed and the fourth side or top is left 0 ;en for the insertion and withdrawal of the at record. Two of these pockets are secured together to form the unit 1 by joining them around the parts of their backs adjacent to their four edges, and
where they are thus oined two of the strips may be used for securing the pockets together. Each of these strips 11 is thus made to come between the ockets of two adjacent units 1 and, there eing' two such strips meeting between the pockets of each -unit, each entire series of units may be flexibly joined together in such number as may be desired. Thus joined together the stri s 11 may be glued or sewed to a common bac ing- 12 constituting the other part of the flexible binding 2, this backing 12 having a flap 13 extending at each side of the series of units 1. thus joined together, each of which flaps '13 is firmly secured to one of the covers 3 of the album; This backing 13 thus maintains the units in alinement and holds them to the covers while at the same time allowing the units to be moved pivotally independently of each other and permitting access to .any one of the pockets comprising the units and reference to a record 111 any one of said pockets through the label disclosing opening therein.
The pockets are numbered as illustrated and an index card 14 is .n'ovided, which is carried in a suitable holder 15 mounted on the back 4 of the cover near the top end, as illustrated in Figs. 6 and. 7 of the drawing.
By constructing the album with two pockets rigidly secured together in each unit the record contained in each pocket of the unit forms a. reinforcement for the record contained in the other pocket, lessening the liability of breakage of the records in turning from one-to the other in the process of selecting them, and, each pocket being provided with label disclosing openings, permitting the identification of any record without removing it from the ocket, the necessity for removing it from tie pocket, until it is actually required for use, is eliminated.
; constructed in the usual well This, in addition to reducing the effort reuired in the selecting of a certain record, a so adds to the safety of handling by permittin the full attainment of the advanta e o ered by the reinforcement of one recor by the other in the pockets of each unit.
The flexible bindin of the peculiar construction herein set orth is the one best adapted for the construction of an album,
the contents of the leaves or units of which oocupg a relatively large s ace and which are 0 relatively considerable weight, requiring the album to be of stron construc- For providing the relative y large capacity andthe degree of strength required, the backin 12 is preferably corrugated as shown, in w ich corrugations the folds of the strips 11, which'join the units, are secured. This corrugated construction of the backing 12 affords a relatively large bearing surface between the backing 12 and allows the stri s 11v to take the form required for holding t 1e units 1 together in such relation as to permit them'to hold the relatively thick talking machine records when the album is closed. The c0vers,3 with their back 4 are preferably known manner em loyed in constructin the backs for books. Ilaving fully describe my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent is: 4
