PUMP FOR MINE-SHAFTS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RICHARD I-InIonoKE and Or'ro LELLAU, subjects of the German Emperor, and residents of Neuhof, near Fulda, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps for Mine-Shafts, of which the following is a specification.
In sink mine shafts, pumps hanging on ropes are employed to which a suction pipe is connected for leading-off the water from the shaft. A great drawback which occurs when sinking mine shafts consists in that the suction pipe is frequently destroyed when blasting the rock, owing to the pipe having a rigid connection with the pump. Apart from the fact that by renewing the suction pipe destroyed much time is lost, the pump itself is by the demolition of the pipe exposed to heavy damage which necessitates permanent repairs of the same.
Now the object of the present invention is to overcome this drawback by providing a flexible connection between the pump and suction pipe, this connection consisting of a flexible tube which is preferably armored in order to prevent damage to the same by the rock splinters.
The sections of the suction pipe are so constructed as to be shifted within each other at a length of about 2 meters in order that the pump may not need to be lowered on its ropes. \Vhen lowering the pump, the suction pipe must be entirely shifted into the flexible armored tube, for which case especially it is also necessary that the flexible tube be armored as otherwise it would collapse under the shifting-in pressure of the suction pipe. To prevent this the armature of the tube consists of divided U-iron rings of which the web is alternately directed towards the inside and outside respectively, the superposed U-iron rings be ing connected by stays which prevent collapse of the same and consequently of the flexible tube.

Figures 1, 2 and 3 are a sectional elevation, sectional plan, and elevation of the same, while Fig. 4 shows the total arrangement of the pump with suction pipe and the connection between both.
Between the pump a and the suction pipe Z) a flexible tube 0 is inserted which consists of an elastic material, preferably indiarubber. This tube 0 is armored in being surrounded by a series of divided U-iron rings (Z and 0 having their webs alternately placed outwards and inwards, so that the rings can participate in the flexible movement of the tube 0.
In order to prevent collapse of the U-iron rings when shifting the suction pipe in the tube, the U-iron rings (Z and e are rigidly connected by stays f and screw-bolts g.
The flexible tube 0 is mounted on castiron flanges h and 2' and by the latter connected to the pump and suction pipe respectively.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by'Letters Patent is A pump for sinking mine shafts, comprising in combination with the pump and its suction pipe, a flexible armored connection between both consisting of a flexible tube, flanges at both ends of said tube to connect the latter to said pump and suction pipe respectively, a series of divided U-iron rings disposed so as to surround said tube and to have their webs alternately placed outwards and inwards, and stays to rigidly connect said rings, for the purpose set forth.
