ADJUSTABLE SHADE AND UMBRELLA HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTINE E. STAPLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Shade and Umbrella Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shade-holders, and pertains especially to a device for holding umbrellas in various positions and from various supports to which the device is applicable.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of novel and peculiar construction adapted to be attached to the back of chairs, seats, vehicles, stands, painters easels, stepladders, or applicable to any place where shade from the light or sun is desired for holding an umbrella.
A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable shade or umbrella support having a specially constructed holder to receive and clamp the handle of umbrellas, whereby the latter may be placed at various angles and positions without adjusting or rearranging the handle in the holder.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a pivot bracket and a novel and peculiar shaped handle-holder in connection with a clamping. screw, and to furnish a special connection between the handle-holder and the pivot.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel and peculiar bracket having pivot connection with an arm which connects the handle-holder with the bracket, and to furnish a special hanger by means of which the device may be applied to various articles and objects, and in various places.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts and especially in the handle-holder and means for pivotally connecting it with various supports so as to position an umbrella at various positions for shading purposes.
In the'accompanying drawings forming part of this application: Figure 1 is a side view of a camp-chair showing the device applied to the back thereof, and showing various positions of an umbrella andthe holder. Fig. 2 is an elevation of an easel showing the device applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a perspective view partly broken away Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 21, 1908.
Patented June 1, 1909.
Serial No. 463,893.
exemplifying the application of the hanger. Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of the handle-holder and bracket assembled. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of hanger.
The same reference numerals denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
For purposes of exemplification the device is shown applied only in a limited way, but it is quite as applicable in many and various other Ways, for protecting persons in working and driving from the sun and inclement weather.
The part of the device for holding an umbrella-handle 1, consists of a holder 1 having a wide curved flange 2, a narrow straight flange 3, which joins the flange 2 in a curve so as to form a pocket-groove to receive umbrella-handles of various size, shape and ornamentation, without injury or defacement of the handles, and a rubber covered screw-hook 4E.
The flange 3 is provided with a lug 5 through which the screw 4 is operated by a suitable thumb-nut 6, for holding the handle between the flanges 2 and 3 or in the pocketgroove. A curved arm 7 extends from the lower end of the flanges 2 and 3 and terminates in a pivot-ear S, the purpose or reason of such curvature in said arm will hereinafter be described.
The bracket for supporting the arm 7, comprises a plate 9, having a screw-lug 1O spaced apart from the plate and joined thereto by a bridge-piece 11, a pivot ear 1.2 projects from the bridge-piece 11 above the screw-lug 10 and away from the plate, said lug having a suitable thumb-screw 13, and the said ear being connected to the ear 8 by a similar screw 14.
The curvature of the arm 7 removes it from contact with a straight umbrella handle, and permits Various shaped and ornamental handles to be readily clamped in the holder without interference, such cur vature also oft-sets the holder above and out of the vertical plane of the pivot-ears and thereby permits pivot movement and the working of the thumb-screws without inter ference of the umbrella handle.
It is obvious that the device is attached to the back of a chair, vehicle-seat easel or stand, or to any article or object capable of fitting the space between the plate 9 and its lug 10, and by operating the screw 13, it is clamped in desired position.
then it is desired to use the device Where there is no object or article to fit the space between the plate 6 and its screwlug, I employ a hanger comprising a plate 15 adapted to be attached to the back of a carriage-seat, wall of a house, fence, or the like; said plate having a band or strip 16 extending over it so as to form a loop or leave a space there between into which the plate 6 is inserted down to its bridge-piece 11, where it is held without operating the screw 13. The band or strip may be made in the same piece with the plate 16 or it may be separate therefrom and suitably secured thereto.
It will be observed that the arm 7 may be turned on its pivot and thereby carry the handle-holder with it so as to fix the umbrella in various positions as desired, with out moving or adjusting the bracket, and that the bracket may also be moved and adjusted to various positions as desired.
hen it is desired to place or remove, or to raise or lower the staff or handle of the umbrella this may be accomplished by simply loosening the screw-hook without removing it from its lug, and without changmg the position of the holder or its arm.
It will also be observed that the holderarm may be given almost complete circular movement so as to place the umbrella at points far distant from each other.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In an umbrella holder, the combination, with a clamping screw, and a clamping plate having a pivot ear vertically opposite the screw, of an arm having at one end an ear adjnstably pivoted to the said plate ear, flanges extending from the other end of the arm lengthwise the latter and forming a seat for an mnbrolla handle, said arm being bowed or curved from the flanges so as to oft-set such handle from the arm, and a suitable screw for clamping the handle in the seat.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
