Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented June 29, 1909.

application and July 22, 190s. serial No. 444,812.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. RIGKEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Rocky, in the 'county of Washita and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in receptacles of that type which are lar to that of an ordinary envelop.

, 1 designates the body With these and other objects in View that will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain con- 'structions'and arrangements of the parts |that I shall hereinafter fully describe, and then point out the novel features thereof in the appended claims.

v For a full understanding of the invention yand the merits thereof, and to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing, by the same reference characters.

For the purpose of illustration, the invention is shown as a plied to an envelop, and in the embodiment s own in Fig. 1 the numeral ortion of the envelop, and 2 the flap for sea ing the envelop. Integral with this flap 2 is a tongue l3 which is designed to pass through a slit 4 in the back of the envelop, and then through a` slit 5 in the crease at the bottom of the envelop. The tongue is next folded upwardly along the front of the envelop and passed through a slit 6 in the front and a slit 7 in the crease at the top of the envelop. The extremity of the tongue may then be folded rearwardly against the back of the envelop, and is rovided with the ears 8 which, when fo ded outwardly, serve to engage the slit 7 to prevent withdrawal of the tongue. It will also be observed that an intermediate portion of the tongue is formed with similar ears 9 which, when folded outwardly, serve to engage the slit 5 in the crease at the bottom of the envelop. However, when the tongue is being inserted through the various slits, both sets of ears are folded against the back thereof. In the preferred construction of the sealing device, those Iportions of the tongue 3 upon the outside o the envelop are provided with adhesive, as indicated at 3, while those ortions of the tongue which are upon the inside of the envelop are provided with adhesive as indicated at 3b. It will thus be obvious that after the letter or other desired matter has been placed within the interior of the envelop, it is merely necessary to meisten the adhesive upon the flap and tongue, and to insert the tongue through the two pairs of slits, as revious y indicated, the ears 8 and 9 being su sequently folded outwardly and secured to the envelop by the adhesive applied thereto.

A slight modification is shown in Fig. 5, in which the numeral 1 designates the body portion of the envelo and 2 the sealing flap therefor. This enve op is somewhat longer than that shown in Fig. 1, and the flap 2 instead of being provided at its central portion with a single tongue, as in the previous instance, is provided with a pair of tongues. The manner of sealing the envelop is identical with that heretofore described, and the two tongues serve to provide a secure closure for the envelop to insure against the opening thereof by an unauthorized party.

From an ins ection of Fig. 6 it willbe observed that t e tongues 3 not only pass through the bottom flap 1b but also through the end flaps 1c, thereby holding the flaps together so that the envelo cannot by any possibility be o ened without tearing the material of whic it is made or otherwise defacin it so as to render such an operation clear y apparent.


Having thusdeseribed the invention, what I claim is:

1. An envelop comprising a body portion and a sealing flap formed wlth a tongue, the body portion being provided With two sets of slits to receive the tongue, and two independent sets of laterally extending ears being provided upon the tongue for ooperation with the slits to prevent Withdrawal of the tongue. 2.l An envelop comprising a body portion and a sealing Hap formed' with a tongue ada ted to extend around the back and front llie envelop and have the extremity thereof secured to the sealing flap, slits through which the tongue extends being provided in 15 both the back and front of the envelop and also in the u per and lower creases thereof, and indepen ent laterally extending ears being rovlded upon the tongue for coperation Wit the slits of the creases in the envelop to prevent withdrawal of the tongue.
