WALTER CLAUDE JOHNSON, OF COLEMANS HATCH, ENGLAND.
WATER-DISTRIBUTER.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER CLAUDE JoHNsoN, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Broadstone Farm, Colemans I-Iatch, county of Sussex, England, have invented a new and useful Improved Water'- Distributer, of which the following is a specication.
The present invention consists in an improvement on the water distributer described in the specification of my previous patent No. 902,662.
In the water distributer therein described the nozzle is uniformly rotated While it undergoes a gradual alteration in its inclination to the vertical, the water being normally projected in an upwardly inclined direction although it is mentioned that the distributer may alternatively be aflixed to the ceiling of a room in an inverted manner so as to operate as a fire-extinguisher.
For fire extinguishing purposes it is important that the jet of water should play upon the ceiling of the room as well as the walls and iioor thereof and articles inclosed therein.
Accordingly, the present invention consists in so mounting and actuating the nozzle that it is caused to continuously rotate about an axis which is inclined in a downward direction relatively to the horizontal plane the nozzle being deviated `from the line of the axis and the said inclined axis being caused to continuously rotate about a vertical axis.
In order that the invention may be more easily understood a constructional form is illustrated on the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a vertical section, and Fig. 2v an inverted plan.
The distributer comprises a casing a adapted to be secured to a ceiling in an inverted manner, and provided with a screwthreaded nipple l) for connection to a water service pipe. A vaned wheel cis rotatably mounted within the casing d and water under pressure, admitted by the nipple b, is directed on to the varies and effects the rotation of the wheel o.
The wheel c by means of a train of wheels c1 c2, d1 and d2 drives a pair of spur-wheels e f. One of the spur-wheels e is secured to a `hollow shaft g which is journaled in the casing a, while the other spur-wheel f is freely mounted to revolve (zo-axially with c. The
Specification of Letters Patent.

wheel f is also provided with a crown of bevel-teeth d.
The spur-wheel e is provided with a tubular extension c1 which serves, on the esca e of the water from the wheel c through tile hollow shaft g, to deviate it in a downwardly inclined lateral direction the line of which rotates about a vertical axis through the center of the machine.
To the extremity of the tubular extension el a hollow shaft t' is secured which forms a journal for a bevel wheel which gears with the before mentioned bevel-teeth h of the spur-wheelf.
To the boss of the bevel-wheel y' the nozzle k is secured, the center line of the extremity of the nozzle diverging from the axis of the hollow shaft i and bevel-wheel in such a manner that on the revolution of the bevelwheel y' around the shaft 'i the escaping'water will be projected as from the apex of a cone along a slowly revolving generating line.
The pair of spur-wheels e have an unequal number of teeth, where y, on their rotation by the pinion d2, one will lag relatively to the other and cause the slow rotation of the nozzle k. Thus, while the spur-wheel e will carry the axis of the bevel-wheel y' around a vertical line, the cranked nozzle l: itself will be caused to slowly and continuously rotate about the said axis. By such means the nozzle will be gradually directed in a manner to cause the jet to play in succession upon all portions of a room including the ceiling.
I claim.
1. In a water distributer, a nozzle, means for slowly rotating said nozzle about a laterally extending axis inclined thereto and means for rotating said axis about a vertical axis at a rate which is a high multiple of the rate of rotation of said nozzle.
2. In a water distributer, a casing, a water-supply nipple thereon, a vaned wheel located in said casing, a pair of differential spur-wheels rotatably mounted on said casing, gearing connecting said vaned wheel with said spur-wheels, a crown of bevel-teeth provided on one of said spur-wheels, an inclined nozzle rotatably mounted on the other spurwheel about a laterally inclined axis anda bevel wheel secured to said nozzle and gearing with said bevel-crown.
3. In a water distributer, a casing, a water supply nipple thereon, a vaned wheel located in. seid casing, a hollow shaft rotatably tably mounted on said tubular extension and mounted on said casing, a spur-wheel rotagearing with Said bevel-crown and an in# tably mounted on said hollow shaft, a crown olined nozzle. secured to said bevel wheel; of bevel-teeth provided on said spurwvheel, In testimony whereof I have signed my 5 secured to seid hollow shaft, a second s urneme to this specification in the 'presence of l wheel having e different number of teet to two subscribing witnesses.
