JOINT FOB METAL ROOFING.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Nov. 2, 1909.

Application fled August 19, 1908. Serial No. 449,316.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LUCIAN B. HUNTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensburg, in the coun of Decatur and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Joints for Metal Roofing, of which the following is a specification.

lhis invention relates to joints for metal roofing and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide sim 1e and eflieient means for rendering the joints or seams of metal roo water tight.

Another 0 ject of the invention is to provide a joint for the meeting edges of tin roofin and to provide means for rendering the jomt absolutely water tight when seamed togleliiher.

ass and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a joint made in accordance with my invention, said joint being shown before it is brought together by the seaming tool, 2 is an edge view of the joint after the seaming tool has been applied thereto, Fig. 3 is a perspective :iiew of one lmember olfI the joint, Fig. 4 is an view s owing t e standing' seam bent doaiiward flat u n the roof. Referring to e drawing the numeral 1 designates a sheet of tin or other roofing material, one edge of which is bent into shape as at 2 to form a standing seam. upon the top of the V-sha 2 is a strip of felt 3, said felt to the V-shaped edge by glue or other adhesive material. T e joint 1 to be joined to the sheet 1 is provided with a substantially U-shaped edge 4 designed to fit over the felt packing 3 with a terminal. edge 5 bearing upon the plate 1, as shown in Fig. 1. When the two members 1 and 1 are arranged as shown in Fig. 1, a suitable seaming tool is applied, and the parts are squeezed to ether, as shown in Fig. 2; or the seam alter it is brought together, as shown in Fig. 2, may be turned down upon the member 1, as shown in Fig. 4.

' My invention is of simple character, can be zjuickly applied, and results in a saving of abor, material and time in applying same. 7

I claim: o

The herein described method of forming joints or seams in metal roofing which consists in bendin the edge of a iece of sheet metal into V- a bending ieadjoining piece at its edge into substantially U-shape, placing a felt packing u n the V-shaped portion, inclosing the pee with the U- sha portion, pressing said V-sha and U-s aped portions together and ding them downward on to the sheet from which the V-sliaped portion was bent.

In testimon whereof I aflix my signature in presence 0 two witnessw.
