To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK SOHILLE, citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Match Safes7 of which the following is a specification.

This invention relatesV to match safes of the single delivery type.

My object is to provide a match safe of the type specified in which there is a receptacle for matches having an inclined top surface and a hinged door to allow a person to place a quantity of matches therein and also adapted to allow a person to reach in to remove any match or matter that can not pass out through a narrow slot in the top of the receptacle when the cover is in a closed position, and to combine a slide or ejector with the receptacle in such a manner that matches may be successively lifted therewith through the slot in the top and delivered on a tray extended from the top of the receptacle.

The invention further consists of the novel features and details of construction which hereinafter will be set forth, illustrated and claimed.

Referring to the drawings forming a part of the specification: Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, the supporting tray being omitted; Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 -3 of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of a portion of the top of the box and the ejector for showing more fully the clearer and the notch in the head of the ejector.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The device comprises a tray 1 and a box 2. The box may be of any construction, size and design and may be connected to the tray or rest loosely thereon. The tray provides a base for the box as also a receptacle for burned matches and is provided along one edge with a roughened portion 3 which constitutes a match scratch. The top of the box is provided at a central point with an opening 4 through which the matches are delivered one at a time. The portions 5 of the top slope downwardly from the opening 4 and one of said top portions extends beyond a side of the box and is curved to form a Speccatonof Letters Patent.

trough or receptacle 6 into which the matches are delivered after rolling upon the inclined portion of the top. Inclin'ed partitions 7 subdivide the box into upper and lower compartments, theupper compartment 8 receiving the matches to be used. The partitions 7 incline npwardty and outwardly and are connected to the ends and sides of the box. The inner lower edges of the partitions 7 are spaced apart to provide an opening through which an ejector is free to operate, said ejector consisting of a plate 9 and a head 10. A guide is provided in the lower i compartment of the box for the ejector to operate in and consists of spaced plates 10 and 11, said plates being connectedY at their upper edges to the partitions 7 at each side of the opening formed between them. The plates 10 and l1 forming the vertical guide for the ejector also subdivide the lower compartment of the box into chambers 12 which may be used for storing matches or other sundry articles, access being had to said chambers by means of doors conveniently positioned in the inclosing walls thereof. The head l0 of the ejector is depressed so as to catch and retain a match which is delivered through the opening 4. When the ejector is at its lowest position, the wings of the head 10 rest upon the partitions 7 adjacent to the space formed between them.

Suitable means are provided forV actuating the ejector and as shown an operating lever 13 is provided and pivoted at 14 to a corner portion of the guide. One arm of the operating lever 13 projects horizontally through the opening in an end of the box and is supplied with a button or finger piece 15. The other arm of the lever 13 normally inclines and is provided at its lower end with a slot 16 through which projects a pin 17, said pin being attached to the lower portion of the ejector and arranged to operate in a vertical slot 18 formed in the plate 10. A spring 19 connected at one end to the inclined arm of the operating lever 13 and to the vertical guide at its opposite end, serves to return the parts to normal position after being operated to edect delivery of a match.

A clearer 20 is provided to push the'match from the head 10 of the .ejector when the latter is elevated. The clearer 20 projects from the portion 5 of the top opposite to that having the trough or receptacle 6 and extends across the delivery opening 4 at such an angle as to insure delivery ofthe match from the ejector. A notch 21 formed in a side of the head 10 adjacent the clearer 2O permits the head passing by the latter when the ejector is raised to its utmost limit.

In practice a quantity of matches are placed loosely in the compartment 8 and by reason of the inclined partitions 7 they automatically adjust themselves lengthwise of the box so as to lie parallel with the plane of the ejector. The matches are placed in the compartment 8 through a door 22. Vhen it is required to obtain a match, pressure is exerted downward upon a button l5 or pro jecting end of the operating lever 13. This causes the inner end of the operating lever to rise, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2,' with the result that the ejector is elevated, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3. By reason ofthe formation of the head 10 a match is retained therein and carried upwardy through the opening 4 and when said match comes 'in Contact with the clearer 20 it is pushed from the head 10 and rolls down a side of the inclined top and is received in the trough or receptacle 6. When pressure is removed from the button or finger piece 15, the spring 19 returns the operatinglever and ejector to normal position.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

A device as specified comprising a tray, a box mounted on said tray, va sloped top disposed on said box having an aperture formed through the upper end of the same, a trough formed `upon the lower edge of said top, partitions disposed in said box and inclined centrally thereof, an ejector mounted centrally in said box and adapted to rest normally upon the lower ends ofsaid partitions, plates vertically positioned in parallel planes in said box upon the opposite sides of said ejector to guide the same, a pin carried by said ejector and extended laterally through a longitudinal slot formed through one of said plates, a lever carried by one of said plates and loosely engaged with said pin, said lever adaptedfto actuate said ejector and a clearer positioned in the upper end of said box for removing matches from said ejector at times.
