WILLIAM '1. WEST, OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY.
GOLF-BALL-MARKING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1909.
Application filed April 29, 1909. Serial No. 493,014.
To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, WILLIAM T. Wns'r, a
citizen of the United States, residing at the '1 Ball-Marking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to a device for quickly and effectively initialing or mark ing for designation, golf and other balls; and in such connection it relates to the constructive arrangement of the device to hold during initialing or marking the ball.
The nature, scope and characteristic features of my invention, will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which Figure 1, is a front elevational view of a marking or initialing press-device of my said invention with a golf or other ball mounted therein to be marked or initialed,
to denote ownership of the ball, when the markings have been pressed into the body of the ball. Fig. 2, is a side elevational view of the device. Fig. 3, is a view in broken section of the base of the device, with the coverplate removed to show the internal arrangement of the type bed of the device; and F igs, 4 and 5, are respectively, transverse sectional views on the lines :12, m and 3 y, of Fig. 8.
Referring to the drawings A, is the pressdevice, comprising a stirrup a, arranged to permit of the mounting of a ball 12, therein. The stirrup is provided with a flat oblong base a having the interior hollowed out to form a bed 6 for inserting type to assume a vertical position therefrom, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. One side of the base is provided with a removable cover-plate b and in each recessed end of the base is introduced screw-bolts 0 and 0 for positioning and firmly holding assembled type of the bed, in position. These screw-bolts are arranged so that by loosening either, without removing the cover-plate b the type may be readily changed;
(Z, is a threaded press-bar provided with a handle (Z at the upper end and a curved press-piece at the lower end to embrace a ball to hold the same in contact with the assembled type in the bed 6 so that by turning the bar (Z, in its bearing in the upper part of the stirrup a, to impress by indenting the desired initials or markings from the type into the body of the ball.
This device is particularly handy in initialing or marking golf balls to denote ownership of the same, and by reason of its size can be conveniently carried in the kit or pocket of the golf player. It will of course be understood that this marking press is adapted to be used, for the marking or ini' tialing of other types of balls, besides balls of the character mentioned. Moreover, that type of different sizes or kinds, may be used and conveniently inserted and positioned as well as removed from the device of the character described.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device of the character described comprising a frame provided with a vertically movable threaded handle bar having a concave end adapted to engage a ball when inserted in the field of said frame, said frame recessed to receive type in a vertical position in the base of said frame, means in the ends of said base below said frame to tighten or loosen the type of said bed and a removable cover-plate on one side of said base, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
