To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, CARL KNSTLER, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kngs, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improved Combined Blacking-Fount and Pad, or its equivalent; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The object of my invention is to provide a neat, simple, and cheap fountain that may be carried in the pocket, for a peculiar kind of blacking, which I manufacture for boots, shoes, harness, dto.

The nature of my invention consists of a small cylinder or tube, each'end of which is provided with a neck, similartl') that of a phial, one of saidnecks being intended to ll the tube by, which, after being filled, is closely corked, and a cap fitting closely over the end, hermetieally seals that end of the apparatus.

The other end is constructed in a similar manner, except that -the neck is'ilaring or larger at the outer end, so that a sponge, pad, or whatever is secured to it, will not be liable'to get out of place or come on.

The pad is for the purpose of a brush, through which the varnish or blacking permeates when in use.

To enable others skilledin the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its consti-no1 tion and operation.

A represents the tube or cylinder of my combined blacking-fount and pad, which maybe made of tin or vother sheet-metals or other suitable material, and of proper and convenient size, so that if desired it may be carried in the pocket.

Near the end of the tube is a small shoulder, a, made for the purpose of receiving the cap C.

When the tube is filled and corked tight, the cap C is closed over the entire end of the tube, so that the cork is not exposed or liable to become loose, or the blacking leak out.

The other end of the tube is also provided with a flaring, neck, D, so as to admit a piece of sponge or cotton batting, E, over which is secured a piece of loose woven fabric or other porous material, which is used as a brush in applying the blacking or Varnish,

This end of the tube is also provided with a small shoulder, o, for the purpose of receiving a cap, F, which is necessary to close over the pad or sponge to prevent the blacking from drying and closing the pores of the cotton or sponge or other material with .which the said pad is made, and to keep the apparatus neat and prevent the hands or clothing from beingr besmeared with the blacking.

The operation `is simple, requiring no mechanical skill for that purpose, and consists in first removing the cap G, and withdrawing the cork, when the tube may be filled with my blacking. -The cork and Kcap are then replaced, and it is ready for use, by removing the cap F.

At the same time the blacking permeates the pad, which is passed gently over the surface ofthe boot or shoe, or whatever article is to be blacked, and the most beautiful gloss will be produced.

If the blacking should not flow in sufficient quantity to produce the result desired, the tube may be turned with the pad upward, -when the air will penetrate through the pad, when it may be used as before, and so on until the blacking in the tube is exhausted.
