To all 'whom 'itmag/ concern:v Be it known that I, J OHN R. LONG, citizen of the United States, residing at Warren, in
the county of `Warren and State of Pennsyl- Vania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved'wrench,
and Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof. Fig. 3 is a f a on the other end and a shank leading up to this jaw from about its middle having opposite edges 2 and 3 in straight lines from about'its middle up t0 said jaw. and the construction and operation of yoke C thereon. Thus, the shank of jaw B is sub` stantially wedge shape in side elevation having a decidedly incllned tapered outer edge 5, running back from jaw Z) and a straight inner edge 6 slidably mounted upon the straight inner edge 3 of thehandle bar A, and yoke C,A is uniformly flared from its inner` toits outer edge to conform to these tapers and'adapt it to operate as herein set forth.
The foregoing construction brings the Afaces of the two opposed jaws a and b squarely opposite each other and holds them always at right angles to the inner straight edges of said parts, while` yoke C and inner jaw member B are inde endcntly and jointly slidable upon member within fixed limits.
As to this, the stop or shoulder 4 limits thel rearward slidi movement f member B, while the screw set in the side of the yoke limitsthe backward movement of the yoke on said member B. Said screw enters a cavity, groove vor recess 8 in the side of shank 9 of said member B., ,Y
This novel and original :marmer of connecting the parts B and C has the practical value of making said parts, operatively de endent, in a sense, and aiords a more per ect and satisfactory control thereof than 'formerly. In my original wrench of this type N o. 890,146, June 9, 11908, the yoke and member corres y ondin 0 B were wholly separate as to sli ing re ations and a stop 1n on the extremity of the shank of the idin jawmember confined the yoke. This was ound i to be objectionable for various reasons. For
example, the said pin battered the edge of the yoke and caused the yoke to pinch the sides of the shank by the bulging of the4 stock. The pin also was injurious to the fin ers in handling the wrench and the yoke had to be thick enou h at that edgeto provide for said pin, w ich made the wrench heavy and clumsy, and, finally, it required a long shank with considerabl less inclination on the back of shank 9 t an with this improvement .to get the necessary ad'ustments.; That caused a Wedging lock o `the yoke oir-said shank which was dillicult to-l release.
By the 4present invention I have been able to materially improve 'the operation of the wrench because by dispensing with .the said. pin and engaging 'the parts by screw 7 at or in their sides, I can materially shorten and li hten shank 9 and oet a largely increase taper to its top ge 5. This considerably Areduces the trave ing distance of said part B and yo C to get the same width of opening between jaws as before, and also very materially improvesI the o eration because the parts cannot now we( ge together as they did formerly and make separation ldifficult. Again, by using the side stop screw 7 I can make both the tapering edges of the yoke alike, whereas formerly the ta' er had to be considerably greater at one e ge than at the other and which made against easy release of the yoke when it had been wedged fast. What I claim is:
1. In a Wrench, a handle member tapered at one end and having a fixed jaw at said end, a loose jaw having a tapering form,va
Haring yoke to slidably confine said loose jaw upon said tapered handle end, and a removable part on said yoke to limitthe play of said loose jaw in respect to the yoke.
2. A Wrench consisting of two jaw memy bers slidably'mounted one upon the other and having Shanks with revers'ely tapered outer edges, and a yoke flaring uniformly at both edges uniting said members and provided With an inslde projection operatively engaged in a longitudinal recess in the side of one ofsaid members.
3. A Wrench having a main member with tact with said shouldered sto and having a recess lengthwise on itsinsi e, and an outwardly flaring yoke embracing said Jaw members and rovided with a removable .screw through its side engaged ,in the recess in said shank and locking said eratively and separably together.
