OFFSET-ADAPTER FOR TELESCOPES FOR FIREARMS. I
Specification of Letters Patent. Patterned ltiay 24, 1910.
Application filed February 17, 1910. Serial No. 544,453.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVINoHEsTER BEN- NETI, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county. of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Offset-Adapters for Telescopes for Firearms; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken inconnection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in'
Figure 1 a broken View in side elevation of a gun provided with a telescope sup ported by two offset-adapters constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a view in vertical section on the line a'b of Fig. 1, looking forward. Fig. 3 a detached view in rear elevation of my improved offsetadapter. Fig. 4 a detached lan view thereof. Fig. 5 a broken view 0 the gun-barrel showing the telescope-base. Fig. 6 a view in transverse section of a gun-barrel provided with one of the modified forms which my improved ofi'set-adapter may assume. Fig. 7 a corresponding view showing the ordinary mode of mounting the telescope upon the barrel, the use of the adapter, being dispensed with.
My invention relates to an improvement in fixtures for the attachment of telescopes to the gun-barrels of fire-arms, the object being to produce a simple, effective and con venient device by means of which, at the option of the user of the arm, a telescope may be offset to one side or the other of the barrel so as topermit the ordinary sights of the gun and the telescope to be used interchangeably, as desired.
lVith these ends in view, my invention consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. r
In carrying out my invention as shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, my improved oflsetadapt'er consists of'a body-portion 2 formed in its under face with an undercut mortise or dovetail groove 3 runnin from front to rear and adapting the said Ody-portion to be applied to the dovetail 4 of the telescopebase 5 which is secured by screws 6 to the gun-barrel 7, the said telescope-base so called, being of the usual form. The said extension or arm 8 supporting an integral dovetail 9 corresponding to the dovetail 4 of the telescope-base and arranged in line therewith and in the horizontal plane thereof, the upper face of the dovetail 9 being in the same level as the'upper face of the dovetail 4 so that the telescope 10 when applied to the dovetail 9 of the offset-adapter has precisely the samehorizontal position as whenapplied to the dovetail 4 of the ordinary telescope-base 5 as shown in Fig. 7. For the purpose of ap lying my improved offset-adapter to theove-tail base 5, its body-portlon 2 is provided with an ordinary thumb-screw 11. The telescope 10 may be of any approved construction and form, but in any event will have its rear and front supports 12 and 13 furnished with feet 14 and 15 having undercut mortises or dovetail grooves 16 adapting them to be either slid upon the dovetail ribs 4 of the ordinary telescope-bases 5 or the dovetail ribs?) of my improved ofiset-adapters two of which are used, of course, in each gun, one for the rear and one for the front support.
The modified construction of my offset adapter, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, isnot provided in its body-portion with an undercut mortise adapting it to be applied to an ordinary telescope-base, but its bodyportion 17 is designed to be fastened by a screw 18 directly to the gun-barrel 19. This modified form of my device, precludes the mounting of the telescope in the ordinary way directly above the barrel.
In case theuser of a gun desires to offset its telescope, it is only necessary for him to remove the same from the telescopebases upon .the gun-barrel and apply a pair of my'otl'sebadapters to the said bases and body-'portionQ is provided on its left hand side with an integral bracket-like lateral then mount the telescope upon the dovetails of the adapters in the same manner that it was before applied to the dovetails of the telescope-bases. The ordinary sights of the gun may now be usedas' though the telescope were not present and vice versa. v
If desired, a pair of my improved ofi'setadapters may be applied to the telescope as gun-barrel, of a telescope, and two olfsetadapters constructed to be fastened to the barrel, each having a lateral extension surmounted by a dovetail extending parallel with the longitudinal axis of the barrel, the dovetail of the forward adapter being in aliuement with the dovetail of the rear longitudinal axis of the adapter, whereby the telescope may be aplicd to and removed from the gun by a ongitudinal movement parallel with the line of the gun-barrel.
2. In a firearm, the combination with the barrel thereof, of a telescope, and a rear and front oiTset-adapter, each consisting of a body-portion formed in its under face with a dovetail groove extendin in line with the liarrel, and each having a lateral extension surmounted by a dovetail extending parallel with the line of the barrel, the dovetail of the-front adapter being in line with the dovetail of the rear adapter, whereby the telescope is applied to and removed from the gun by a movement parallel with the line of the barrel.
3. In a firearm, the combination with the barrel thereof, of two telescope-bases fastened to the barrel and having dovetails,-of a telescope having rear and front mounts each formed with a foot containing a dovetail groove, and a pair of offset-adapters each formed upon the lower face of its inner end with a dovetail groove and each having a lateral extension surmounted by a dovetail, the dovetails of the teleseopebases andv those of the adapters correspondirilg in form and horizontal arrangement, but\ the latter being at one side of the former.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
