TolaZZ whgm/itmay concm: y Be it known that I, OLIVER J.'-HOLT, of
:Chelsea, in the county .of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ljamps; andv I herebydeclare that the fol.-
lowing is a full, clear, and exact-description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, form1ng 'part of this specification.
- This invention relates to improvements in described.
,, Other objects of theinvention will iiippear from the following description.-
fully 7 claims.

improved lamp and the number plate,to
Theinvention cqnsists in the peculiar construction ofthe lamp. casing. 1
The invention also consists inthe peculiar means for mounting the lamp casing on the' number, plate. v
The invention also consists in such other novel features'of construction and. combination of parts as shall hereinafter he more described, and pointed out in the ch itis attached. Fig. 2, represents a sectional view of the same taken on'line 22 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a similar view taken on .line 3-3 Fi 1. Fig. 4g-"rcpresents a front elevation o a modified form of the improvedlamp attached to a number plate. Fig. 5, represents a sectional view of the modification taken on line 5-5 Fig. 4. Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
In carrying this invention into pract ce, in its preferred form, I construct a casing substantially in the shape of a hood having aback 6, a curved top andaflanged substantially semi-elliptical front 8' furnished with a-circular opening having the flanged ed e 9 for receiving the split ring 9, the ends of which are furnished with the perforated lugs 10 and 11, one" of which is screw threaded to engage the clamping or Specification of Letters latent. drawing screw 12 whereby the split 'may be" drawn to engage and confine the edge ofthe lens 13 which for use in the resent device, is preferably red in color. 'or-' tions of the back 6, top 7 and front 8 are turned inward to engage the ed es of the glass panel 14 which is prefera ly trans-- parent, the inward turned portions of said" members being designated 6', 1 and 8 respectively. as shown in Fig. 2. a 1
Mounted in the top 7 are the binding posts X-Y furnished with binding nuts adapted to secure the conductors of anelcc- I tric circuit in place. Interiorly of the lamp casing said posts connect wit the socket 15 of'an-electric bulb 16. i
On the back'6 of the lamp 18 bentover to engage the upper edge of a number plate or sign and on which the lamp is or may be mounted. Inorder to secure the plate 17 to the number plate a I preferably make use of a pair of clafmps comprissing is prefv 'erably secured the plate 17 having'th'e edge ing the metal strips 19 and 20 havin rspectively the bent lips 21 and-222m the members 2324 adapted to be drawn together by the clamping bolts 25 and their nuts. I
When in use rays of light reflected by the bright inner surface of the casing are directed outward through-the colored lens l3 and downward through the, transparent panel 14 to illuminate the face of the plate a. The bulb 16 is protected by said panel 14 from dust and gravel and, by reason of the construction of the front of the casing said casing is rendered practically dust proof.
In the modification shown'in Figs. 4. and
5 the casing is formed withangoval wall,
wider at the top 26 than at the 'bottom 27 and having or furnished with prog'eoting e memflanges 26 for mounting the chann bers 28 and 29 of which the channeled member 28-is furnished with the 30 audi31' one of which has a screw threa ed erforation adapted tobe engaged by the screw 32 whereby thesaid member 28 is drawn tight about the edge of libelous 33,
preferably colored while the clear glass awing panel 34' is: secured in the channelmembei; 29. On the to 26 are secured binding posts as X adapte nected interiorly of the casmg with to receive and po'rtions off electric conductors and. said posts are gun th no socket 35 furnished withthe incandescent electric bulb '35. ;The. lam supporting eurved arm 36 is securedto the top 26 of the casmg and is furnished with the plate 37 having the lip 38, while the ortion 320i the arm 36, below the plate 3 is bent outward;tol ,form the perforated member 40.
' The clam ing plate 1 has the bent edge 42 and the 'ent erforated member-143 and a screw bolt an of-the plate 37, andthe edge42-of the plate 41 engage the edges of, the number plate a and secure the lamp thereto.-
This'improved-lamp is particularly adapt- Y -ed to be mounted on'anumber plate Lautomobiles whether said plateisfixed or is mountedtostvmg, andsaid lam serves a both as a danger signal and as-an il umi'nati'ng means for said number plate.
Having thus described my invention 1' claim as new'and desire tofsecureby Letters Patent' 1'.
