JOHN F. MAYNARD, OF PLYMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOB TO TI-IE DRAPER &
MAYNARD COMPANY, OF PLYMOUTH, NEW HAIMPSHIRE, A CORPORATION OF NEW HAMPSHIRE.
PUNCHING-BAG MITT.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN F. MAYNARD, of Plymouth, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punching-Bag Mitts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a mitt for protecting the back of a clenched hand used to strike an oscillatory punching bag, the object of the mitt being to protect all portions of the hand which are liable to come into contact with the punching bag.
The invention consists in the improved construction hereinafter described whereby the desirability and efiiciency of the mitt as a hand protector are increased.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,Figure 1 represents a palm View of the mitt embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a section on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view showing the mitt in use on a clenched hand. Fig. 5 represents a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Figs. 6 and 7 represent side views of the parts of which the external surface portions of the mitt shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, are made.
My improved mitt is made without a thumb and comprises a cushioned portion formed to cover the back of the hand in cluding the backs of the fingers and extended at one edge to form a wing cushion formed to cover the joint or knuckle at the base of the forefinger, and a grip portion formed to bear on the front sides of the fingers, the outer edge of the wing cushion and the inner edge of the grip portion forming parts of the margin of a hand-receiving opening in the front of the mitt. The mitt is made without a thumb and when the hand is inserted in it, the thumb and the palm of the hand are exposed. The said cushioned portion includes an outer member 12 an inner member 13 and an intermediate layer 141. of felt or other suitable cushioning material, which is confined between the members 12 and 13 by the operation of stitching said members together. The grip portion of the mitt is composed of a member 15 formed to bear on the front sides of the fingers, the

said grip portion being preferably composed of a single sheet of flexible material to which is preferably attached a grip cushion 16 extending across the member 15 near its lower end as indicated in Figs. 1, 2 and 5.
The preferred form of the members of which the cushioned portion is made is preferably as shown in Fig. 6 and the preferred form of the grip member 15 is preferably as shown in Fig. 7. The members 12 and 13 of the cushioned portion are provided, respectively, with extensions 12 and 13, one end of each extension having an offset edge portion 17. The inner end of the grip member 15 is provided with an edge portion 18 which conforms to the offset edge portion 17, the said grip member having at its lower end an additional edge portion 18 which forms the inner end of the hand-receiving opening of the mitt. In assen'ibling the said members, the entire margin of the grip member 15 excepting the edge portion 18 is cured to the corresponding portion of the margin of the cushioned portion by a seam 19, shown in section in Fig. 5, said seam including the edge portions 17 and 18. The form of the cushioned and grip members is such that the operation of stitching their edges together as described causes the extension of the cushioned portion to project inwardly. the inwardly projecting portion designated by the numerals 12 and 13 constituting a wing cushion adapted to extend across the oint or knuckle at the base of the forefinger, the longer edge portion of the said extension forming a part of the margin of the hand-receiving opening. The entire margin of said opening is preferably finished by a binding strip 20 which is stitched to the cushioned portion and the grip portion as clearly indicated by Figs. 1 and 3. The cushion 141 is preferably additionally secured by a continuous line of stitches 21, extending through the members 12 and 13 and the intermediate cushion layer as indicated in Figs. 3 and 5.
hen the described mitt is applied to the hand, the entire back of the hand inchuling the backs of the fingers are covered by the cushioned portion, the wing cushion of which extends over and protects the joint or knuckle at the base of the forefinger, so that when the hand is clenched the said joint or knuckle is fully protected as indicated by Fig. 4:.
I do not limit myself to the described form and construction of the members of the mitt for although this construction is preferable because it reduces to the minimum the number of seams, the cushion portion of the mitt With its knuckle protecting Wing portion may be otherwise constructed Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
22 represents an elastic strap adapted to bear on the Wearers Wrist as shown in Fig. 4.
I claim:
A thumbless mitt comprising a cushioned portion formed to cover the back of the hand including the backs of the fingers, and extended at one. edge to form a Wing cushion, formed to cover the joint or knuckle at the base of the forefinger, and a grip portion formed to bear on the front sides of the fingers, the outer edge of the Wing cushion and the inner edge of the grip portion forming parts of the margin of a hand-receiving opening in the front of the mitt.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
