Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 12, 1910. Serial No. 586,632.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY BAUERFEIND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Shawano, in the county of Shawano and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Limb-Rest, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention is an improvement in limb rests, particularly such as are used for sup porting an arm or leg of a corpse during the process of embalming, and has in view an appliance .of this nature adapted to be detachably and firmly clamped at the edge of a table, morgue table or cooling board, and adjustably held at the required elevation and point of use.

To this end the invention consists of a U-shaped screw clamp having a jaw 0pposed to the screw and mounted to turn on one of the arms of the clamp, whereby the clamp will adapt itself to the table or other object to which it is applied, and an arm having a post and a vertically-adjustable limb rest, the arm adjustable to the post and the post adjustable in a socket of the swinging aw.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of a limb rest constructed in accordance with my invention, the rest being shown applied at the edge of a table; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same centrally of the screw.

In the construction of my improved limb rest, I employ a U-shaped screw clamp 5, the clamp diifering from the ordinary clamp construction in that the arm opposite the clampin screw 6 is made cyllndrical in form an d serves as a pivot for a swinging clamping jaw 7, the latter being provided with an inwardly-extending arm 8, which is offset near the end to engage back of the clamp and thus prevent the jaw from sliding from the arm, yet giving it a substantial longitudinal adjustment thereon.

The top or outer side of the jaw 7 is provided with a socket which receives a post 9, the post being held in adjusted position in the socket, both as regards turning and vertical movement, by a set-screw 10. Through the head of the post, which is enlarged, is slidably adjustable a horizontal or transverse arm 11, the arm being adapted to be held in adjusted position on the post by a set-screw 12, which is threaded into one side of the post head. One end of the arm is provided with a head through which passes vertically or transversely of the post, the stem of a limb rest 13, the latter,being held in adjusted position by a set-screw 14; threaded into the head of the arm 11. The head of the limb rest is in the nature of a yoke to receive the arm or leg of the corpse during the process of embalming. The several adjustments afforded adapt the rest to be placed at substantially any elevation within certain limits and at the required point for use. Thus, by loosening the setscrew 10, the rest can be turned to project in any direction, and by loosening the setscrew 12, the effective length of the arm 11 can be increased or diminished. Also, by loosening the set-screw 14, the rest can be moved up and down. By the manner of mounting the j aw 7 on the arm of the clamp frame, the clamp will automatically adjust itself, when tightened, to-a wedge-shaped or curved surface and in this manner rigidly sustained.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In a device of the character described, a U-shaped screw clamp, a jaw mounted to turn on one of its arms to adapt the clamp to automatically adjust itself to the object to which it is applied.

2. In a device of the class described, a U-shaped screw clamp, a jaw opposed to the screw, the jaw mounted to turn on one of the arms of the clamp and having a limited sliding adjustment thereon.

3. The combination of a U-shaped clamp, a jaw mounted to turn on one of the arms of the clamp, the jaw having a socket, a post having a rotary adjustment in the socket, anarm adjustable through the post and a limb rest on said arm.
