Description

U. H. ELLIS.
ENGINE. 7 APPLICATION FILED NOV. 15,1910.
Patented June 13, 1911.
nv VENTOR CHRISTOPHER HENRY ELLIS, OF BRIX'ION, LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO ERNEST HAMILTON HEINKE, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
ENGINE.
Application filed November 15, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER HENRY ELLIS, a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of 32 Crowhurst road, Brixton, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Engines for Motor-Cars, Flying-Machines, and the Like, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to engines, par ticularly internal combustion engines of the opposing cylinder type and consists of improvements in the construction and more particularly as regards the method of communicating the movements of the piston to the shaft they are employed to drive, the said movements being communicated from the piston rods through a sleeve-like or other suitable sliding hearing which is adapted to reciprocate on a spindle or gudgeon arranged between the pistons which are four (or more) in number and preferably arranged in substantially H manner.
I will describe the invention with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a view in sectional elevation of a simple form or my invention, the valves, timing gear and other external fittings being omitted, the'said fittings forming no essential part of the invention and being of any desired kind.
It will be seen from the drawing that the two pair of pistons a, a, and b, I), are adapted to reciprocate in their respective cylinders c, c, and (Z, (Z, the pistons a, a, being rigidly joined together by the rigid rod 6 and the pistons 6, Z), by the rigid rod f, the said rods being connected by a fixed cross bar or gudgeon g. A sleeve-like bearing h is fitted over the gudgeon g, and has a reciprocating movement upon it, the said bearing being pivotally mounted on the crank pin of shaft 70, a counter weight 2' being employed to balance the pistons and their rods. In the event of eight or more cylinders actuating a more than single throw Specification of Letters Patent.

crank this weight would not be advisable as the groups of cylinders would balance themselves. The rotary movement of the shaft is outside the engine is conveyedto the wheels, gear or equivalent to be driven.
Any suitable form of water jacket may be employed for cooling the cylinder and in' the example shown lugs Z, Z, are provided for fixing the water jacket. In cases where it is more desirable to use air cooling devices the cylinder heads should be suitably designed.
Any suitable order of firing the charges may be employed but it is preferable to fire diagonally that is in the order indicated by the numerals 1, 2, 3 and 4 on the drawings.
It must be understood that an example of the principle of the invention only is shown in the drawing and any modification within the scope of the following claims may be adopted.
hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an engine, the combination of four or more cylinders oppositely arranged in pairs, pistons in said cylinders, piston rods connecting the opposing pistons, a cross bar rigidly connecting the piston rods so that all of the pistons are adapted to move in unison, a sleeve slidably mounted to travel on said cross bar, and a shaft with which the sleeve is pivotally connected.
2. In an engine, the combination of four or more cylinders oppositely arranged in pairs, pistons in said cylinders, piston rods connecting the opposing pistons, a cross bar rigidly connecting the piston rods so that all of the pistons are adapted to move in unison, a sleeve slidably mounted to travel on said cross bar, a shaft, a crank carried by said shaft which is pivoted to the sleeve, and a counterweight for said shaft.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTOPHER HENRY ELLIS.
IVitnesses:
Gnoncn IVILLIAM STONE, HENRY FAIRBROTHER.
