UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TO AMERICAN TYPE A CORPORATION OF DESIGN FOR A FONT OF BORDER-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 35,967, dated June 24, 1902. Application filed May 26,1902. Serial No. 109,120. Term of patent 14 years.
To all "1072,0127, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY EARTH, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Border- Type, of which the following is a specification.
This design comprises a font of twenty-one characters, all in outline and all but two with open ends, and most of them having a somewhat grotesque character given them by reason of the fact that the lines forming them are not parallel, but curved, separating irregularly between their extremities, giving'the characters a bulgy appearance. Seven of said characters are the reversal of seven others. Of these fourteen characters four of them may be termed corner-pieces, their extremities pointing at right angles to each other. Two of these characters resemble the letter S, the ends of the letter being extended upon a considerable curve, one of these characters being the reversal of the other, these cl1aracters being shown at the extremity of the top line in the drawings. Next to these two charactors are characters also resembling a letter S not entirely developed. The middle characters in the said first line are also reversals, one of the other, each slanting somewhat. Below these two characters are two other reversals, each of which has the characteristic of the letter S ,with a very "full body and short terminals. Beneath these in the drawings is another line of characters composed of parallel lines, the first on the left comprising an arc of substantially ninety degrees drawn in outline on a short radius, the next being three outline dashes of various lengths, and those on the right two reversals, each adapted to form a terminal of a line and having a short downward curve. The next line begins with two reversals, each being somewhat pearshaped, the small end of each pointing along the line. The middle character on said line is a corner-piece somewhat angular in character and fuller at the angle than at the extremities. On each side of this corner-piece is a dash-like character swelling somewhat in the middle and having a slight ogee shape, the one being a reversal of the other. The two characters at the right end of the line are one of them a terminal, the inner line of which is an arc of one hundred and eighty degrees, the character being the bulgy appearance above referred to, and the other an arc of about ninety degrees, composed of parallel lines which may be used for a cornerpiece.
What I claim as my invention is- The design for a font of border-type as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my name this 14th day of May, 1902.
