Cl. 250-219 1 Sheet Drawing. 10 Pages Specification An apparatus for simultaneously measuring ridges and indentations in the peripheral surface of a rotating cylindrical yarn package wherein a ribbon of light is projected axially across the surface of the package at an angle With respect to the longitudinal axis of the package to cast shadows corresponding to the ridges and indentations. The illuminated portion of the package surface is scanned in a non-specular plane and the light reflected from the package surface in the non-specular plane is redirected to a photosensitive means which detects ridges and indentations in the surface of the package through variations in intensity of the redirected light.
