Abstract

The mandrin for a catheter is comprised of a plurality of wires (1), having a circular cross-section and arranged at a distance from each other and half-embedded at the surface of a flexible plastic strand (2). Said construction provides the mandrin with a rigidity, a flexibility and an elasticity which may be reproduced precisely.

Description

Mandrin für Katheter Stylet for catheters
The invention relates to a stylet for catheters, consisting of a plastic strand with a wire insert that is circular in cross section.
From US-PS 39 73 556 a mandrel consisting of a helical spring with a wire core is known, the windings of which can be partially ground on the outside or provided with a plastic coating. This known catheter has a considerable weight and is expensive because of its complicated structure.
Another known stylet for venous catheters, for example, consists of a plastic strand provided with an X-ray contrast strip. Furthermore, a stylet of the type specified at the outset is known, in which a wire forms the core of the plastic strand and which is produced by the plastic being extrudate around the wire. The flexibility of these well-known stylets mainly depends on the type of plastic material, whose flexibility and elasticity are known to vary in large tolerance ranges.
The object of the present invention is therefore to create a stylet whose rigidity, flexibility and elasticity can be reduced within narrow limits.
According to the invention this object is achieved in that a plurality of wires with a round cross-section at a distance from each other in the upper surface of the strand made of a soft plastic and left by this are bordered over half of their cross-sections. In the stylet according to the invention, a very soft plastic is used, which essentially serves only as a filling material, so that its stiffness, flexibility and restoring force are mainly determined by the metal wire. The flexibility and elasticity of the stylet are no longer dependent on the properties of the plastic used, which are difficult to reproduce from batch to batch with the required accuracy. Since the wires give the stylet the required flexibility and elasticity, a very soft plastic can be used, the hardness of which no longer needs to be adjusted within narrow limits. The stylet according to the invention is therefore characterized by a more uniform elasticity and flexibility, which better meet the requirements of practice.
The stylet according to the invention can also be easily pushed into the catheter tube, since the wire, with its cross-section, roughly crescent-shaped, protrudes over the surface of the plastic strand Support elevations against the inner wall of the catheter and form guides. The more, linear contact of the stylet with the catheter reduces the friction between the two, which is particularly important for pulling out the stylet so that there is no displacement of the inserted catheter. The ones running over the surface of the stylet.
Drähte verleihen diesem eine gute Elastizität, so daß der Man drin nach einem Auslenken durch ein Hindernis infolge seiner;Wires give this a good elasticity, so that the man in it after being deflected by an obstacle as a result of it;
Restoring force returns to its original position. Kathe ter are therefore easier to lay with the inventive styling. The wires can run ver in the axial direction of the plastic strand or surround it in a helical shape. If the wires run helically over the surface of the plastic strand, the stylet and thus the catheter can follow the curves and radii of the laying path particularly easily.
Further advantageous embodiments of the invention have been described in more detail in the subordinate claims.
In dieser zeigtAn embodiment of the invention is explained below with reference to the drawing. In this shows
Fig. 1 einen Längsschnitt durch einen Mandrin abschnitt undFig. 1 section and a longitudinal section through a stylet
Fig. 2. einen Querschnitt durch den Mandrin nach Fig. 1.2. a cross section through the stylet according to FIG. 1.
Dar mandrin consists of a strand 2 of round cross-section made of a soft plastic, over the surface of which four wires 1 extend at the same distance from one another in the axial direction. The wires 1 are so far embedded in the surface of the plastic strand 2 that they protrude only about a third. The wires are thus securely held in the plastic strand.
The wires are very thin in relation to the cross section of the plastic strand and are dimensioned such that they give the stylet the required flexibility and elasticity.
The wires are preferably made of a stainless steel.
To produce the stylet, the wires are extruded with the plastic strand or pressed into it immediately after the extrusion.
