Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for connecting a system (MS; MS1; MS2) utilizing message-based synchronization with an external system (ES). The message-based system comprises a plurality of nodes (1... 6, IN1, IN2) interchanging signals containing synchronization messages with information about the priority of the respective signal in the internal synchronization hierarchy of the system. To produce as flexible a connection as possible, the external system (ES) is connected to the system utilizing message-based synchronization by converting the synchronization status received from the external system into the internal synchronization status of the system (MS) using message-based synchronization in the interface node (IN1, IN2) of the system (MS) using message-based synchronization in such a manner that the level in the internal synchronization hierarchy of the message-based system as indicated by said internal synchronization status rises or falls corresponding to the rise and, correspondingly, fall of a predetermined magnitude occurring in the synchronization status of the external system. In a second embodiment, the internal synchronization status obtains a certain constant level in the internal synchronization hierarchy of the system and said constant level is used together with the synchronization status data received from the external system (ES) in selecting the source of synchronization in the message-based system.
