Abstract

In an apparatus for making and inspecting a multi-component cigarette (77), each cigarette including two or more different components arranged relative to one another, the apparatus includes a device for positioning at least two different components of a cigarette relative to one another on the web as the advances in the first direction (65). The apparatus further includes a garniture device (63) for wrapping the web around the at least two different components by moving opposite edges of the web transversely to the first direction such that, at a closure point (83) in the garniture device, the opposite edges overlap each other. The apparatus further includes an imaging device (87) disposed upstream of the closure point for generating an image of the at least two different components. The apparatus further includes a processing device (91) connected to the imaging device. A method for manufacturing and inspecting multi-component articles is also disclosed.

Claims

-14-CLAIMS:
1. An apparatus for making and inspecting a multi-component cigarettes, each cigarette including two or more different components arranged relative to one another, comprising: a device for advancing a web in a first direction; a device for positioning at least two different components of a cigarette relative to one another on the web as the web advances in the first direction; a garniture device for wrapping the web around the at least two different components by moving opposite edges of the web transversely to the first direction such that, at a closure point in the garniture device, the opposite edges overlap each other; an imaging device disposed upstream of the closure point for generating an image of the at least two different components; and a processing device connected to the imaging device for comparing the generated image with a reference standard and determining if the generated image deviates from the reference standard.
2. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein the at least two different components include a tobacco rod and a filter plug.
3. The apparatus as set forth in claim 2, wherein the tobacco rod and the filter plug are positioned relative to each other such that an end of the tobacco rod and a closest end of the filter plug are disposed at a distance from each other.
4. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein the at least two different components include a tobacco rod, a tube, and a filter plug. -15-

The apparatus as set forth in claim 4, wherein the tobacco rod, the tube, and the filter plug are positioned relative to each other such that an end of the tobacco rod is adjacent a first end of the tube, and a second end of the tube is disposed at a distance from a closest end of the filter plug.
6. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the imaging device includes an illumination device for illuminating the components.
7. The apparatus as set forth in claim 6, wherein the illumination device includes a strobe light.
8. The apparatus as set forth in claim 7, wherein the strobe light includes a light emitting diode.
9. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein the imaging device includes an image acquiring device for acquiring an image of the components illuminated by the illuminating device.
10. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein the positioning device positions a plurality of the at least two components relative to one another on the moving web successively.

The apparatus as set forth in claim 10, wherein a length of the garniture device from an upstream-most point to the closure point is at least as long as a length from a leading end of a first one of the at least two components to a trailing end of a final one of the at least two components. -16-

The apparatus as set forth in claim 11, wherein the imaging device is arranged relative to the garniture device such that the imaging device is adapted to generate an image of the at least two components of an article from the leading end of the first one of the at least two components to the trailing end of the final one of the at least two components.
13. The apparatus as set forth in claim 10, wherein the at least two different components include a double-length tobacco rod and a double-length filter plug, and the apparatus includes a cutting device for cutting the double-length tobacco rod and the double-length filter plug.
14. The apparatus as set forth in claim 13, wherein the cutting device is adjustable to adjust a position of a cut of at least one of the double-length tobacco rod and the double-length filter plug.
15. The apparatus as set forth in claim 14, wherein the processing device generates one or more signals in response to detection of a deviation of the generated image from the reference standard, the cutting device being responsive to the one or more signals from the processing device to adjust the position of the cut of the at least one of the double-length tobacco rod and the double-length filter plug.

The apparatus as set forth in claim 15, further comprising a rejection device operable in response to a signal from the processing device to reject cigarettes corresponding to a generated image that the processing device determines to deviate by more than a predetermined amount from the reference standard. -17-

The apparatus as set forth in claim 1, further comprising a rejection device operable in response to a signal from the processing device to reject cigarettes corresponding to a generated image that the processing device determines to deviate by more than a predetermined amount from the reference standard.
18. An apparatus for making and inspecting a multi-component articles, each article including two or more components arranged relative to one another, comprising: a device for arranging two or more components of a multi-component article relative to one another; an imaging device arranged relative to the arranging device for generating an image of the components of the multi-component articles; a processing device connected to the imaging device for comparing the generated image with a reference standard and determining if the generated image deviates from the reference standard.
19. The apparatus as set forth in claim 18, wherein the imaging device includes an illumination device for illuminating the components.
20. The apparatus as set forth in claim 19, wherein the illumination device includes a strobe light.
21. The apparatus as set forth in claim 20, wherein the strobe light includes a light emitting diode.
22. The apparatus as set forth in claim 19, wherein the imaging device includes an image acquiring device for acquiring an image of the components illuminated by the illuminating device. -18-
23. The apparatus as set forth in claim 18, wherein the components are moved relative to inspecting apparatus, and the imaging device includes a strobe light for illuminating the components.
24. The apparatus as set forth in claim 23, wherein the strobe light includes a light emitting diode.
25. A method for making and inspecting a multi-component cigarettes, each cigarette including two or more different components arranged relative to one another, comprising the steps of: advancing a web in a first direction; positioning at least two different components of a cigarette relative to one another on the web as the web advances in the first direction; wrapping the web around the at least two different components by moving opposite edges of the web transversely to the first direction with a garniture device such that, at a closure point in the garniture device, the opposite edges overlap each other; generating an image of the at least two different components with an imaging device disposed upstream of the closure point; and comparing the generated image with a reference standard and determining if the generated image deviates from the reference standard with a processing device.
26. The method as set forth in claim 25, wherein the at least two different components positioned relative to one another include a tobacco rod and a filter plug. -19-
27. The method as set forth in claim 26, wherein the tobacco rod and the filter plug are positioned relative to each other such that an end of the tobacco rod and a closest end of the filter plug are disposed at a distance from each other.
28. The method as set forth in claim 25, wherein the at least two different components positioned relative to one another include a tobacco rod, a tube, and a filter plug.
29. The method as set forth in claim 28, wherein the tobacco rod, the tube, and the filter plug are positioned relative to each other such that an end of the tobacco rod is adjacent a first end of the tube, and a second end of the tube is disposed at a distance from a closest end of the filter plug.
30. The method as set forth in claim 25, wherein the imaging step includes illuminating the at least two components with an illuminating device.
31. The method as set forth in claim 30, wherein the at least two components are illuminated with a strobe light.
32. The method as set forth in claim 25, wherein the imaging step includes acquiring an image of the components illuminated by the illuminating device with an image acquiring device.
33. The method as set forth in claim 25, wherein the positioning step includes positioning a plurality of the at least two components relative to one another on the moving web successively. -20-

The method as set forth in claim 33, wherein the at least two different components positioned relative to one another include a double-length tobacco rod and a double-length filter plug, the method comprising the further steps of cutting the double-length tobacco rod and the double-length filter plug.
35. The method as set forth in claim 34, comprising the further steps of generating one or more signals in response to detection of a deviation of the generated image from the reference standard, and adjusting a position of a cut of at least one of the double-length tobacco rod and the double-length filter plug in response to the one or more signals.
36. The method as set forth in claim 35, comprising the further step of generating a signal with the processing device when a generated image is determined deviate by more than a predetermined amount from the reference standard, and rejecting cigarettes corresponding to the generated image with a rejection device operable in response to the signal.
37. The method as set forth in claim 25, comprising the further steps of generating a signal with the processing device when a generated image is determined deviate by more than a predetermined amount from the reference standard, and rejecting cigarettes corresponding to the generated image with a rejection device operable in response to the signal.
38. A method of making and inspecting a multi-component article, comprising the steps of: arranging a plurality of components relative to one another; generating an image of the arranged components with an imaging device; comparing the generated image with a reference standard; and -21-
determining if the generated image deviates from the reference standard.
39. The method as set forth in claim 38, comprising the further step of wrapping the components in a wrapping material, wherein the components are arranged relative to one another on the wrapping material prior to wrapping.
40. The method as set forth in claim 39, wherein the components include at least one tobacco rod and at least one filter element.
41. The method as set forth in claim 40, wherein each of the components are separated from another one of the components by a gap.
42. The method as set forth in claim 38, comprising the further step of wrapping the components in a wrapping material in a continuous wrapping operation, wherein the wrapping material is moved in a wrapping direction and the components are arranged relative to one another on the wrapping material prior to wrapping as the wrapping material is moved in the wrapping direction.
43. The method as set forth in claim 42, wherein the wrapping material is wrapped around the components in a direction transverse to the wrapping direction.
44. The method as set forth in claim 42, wherein the components include at least one tobacco rod and at least one filter element.
45. The method as set forth in claim 44, wherein each of the components are separated from another one of the components by a gap. -22-
46. The method as set forth in claim 44, wherein the continuous wrapping operation produces successive wrapped sets of components, the method comprising the further step of separating the successive wrapped sets of components from one another to form a finished article.
47. The method as set forth in claim 46, wherein successive wrapped sets of components are separated from one another by a cutting device.
48. The method as set forth in claim 38, comprising the further steps of generating a signal when the generated image and the reference standard deviate, and identifying components corresponding to the generated image that deviate from the reference standard in response to the signal.
49. The method as set forth in claim 48, comprising the further step of wrapping the components in a wrapping material in a continuous wrapping operation, the continuous wrapping operation produces successive wrapped sets of components, and separating the successive wrapped sets of components from one another to form a finished article.
50. The method as set forth in claim 49, comprising the further step of rejecting finished articles including components identified as deviating from the reference standard.
51. The method as set forth in claim 48, wherein the components are wrapped in an open garniture wrapping device.
52. The method as set forth in claim 51, wherein the successive wrapped sets of components are separated from one another by a cutting device. -23-
53. The method as set forth in claim 38, wherein the image of the components is generated by illuminating the components and acquiring an image of the illuminated components.
54. The method as set forth in claim 53, comprising the further step of wrapping the components in a wrapping material in a continuous wrapping operation, and wherein the components are illuminated with a strobe light.
