Definitions
- a layer containing an electrically conductive, transparent material a method for producing such a layer and its use
- the invention relates to a layer which contains an organic transparent, electrically conductive material, a method for producing such a layer and its use, in particular in LC displays.
- LC displays have two glass substrates, which have a polarization filter on one side and a structured electrode (one of the electrodes can also be unstructured) made of indium tin oxide (ITO), which is covered with an orientation layer, for example made of polyimide is.
- ITO indium tin oxide
- the orientation layer serves to induce a preferred direction of molecules - for example - parallel to a surface. Orientation is usually done by rubbing.
- the coated glass substrates border with the orientation layers on the opposite surfaces of a liquid crystal.
- ITO is deposited in a vacuum process by sputtering, which is expensive.
- the ITO layer is then photolithographically structured, in which the exposed ITO is etched away using HBr or HC1 and HNO3. The materials and processes mentioned make the production of the layer structure expensive and time-consuming.
- organic, electrically conductive polythiophene derivatives are described, among others, in the latter application, among others
- Polyethylene dioxythiophenes are mentioned as electrode material for LC displays.
- the polythiophenes are produced by oxidizing thiophenes in the presence of polyacids in particular in the presence of poly.
- the polythiophenes receive positive charges during the polymerization.
- the polymer produced is applied to the glass substrate and converted into the layer by drying and optionally tempering. This production is simpler and less complex than the production of ITO layers.
- the structuring of the organic, conductive polymers is somewhat less complex than that of ITO because no strong inorganic acids have to be used for the etching. However, the process for producing the entire layer structure of LC displays is still quite complex.
- a layer of the type mentioned at the outset which is characterized in that the layer is oriented, by a method of the type mentioned at the beginning, in which layers produced in a conventional manner are oriented which contain an organic, electrically conductive, transparent material , and solved with the use of the layer in an LC display as a combined electrode and orientation layer.
- the layer according to the invention therefore makes an additional orientation layer unnecessary.
- the method for producing LC displays can be carried out in a substantially more time-saving and cost-effective manner, without it becoming more difficult, because only when it is carried out ffi Cfl ⁇ TJ TJ Pl w (- •• TJ s: ow • O s: 01 P ) ⁇ TJ a TJ £ MS l- 1 Pl o ⁇ ö d:
- the photopolymerizable starting material for the polymer, the crosslinkable polymer and / or the crosslinkable binder is additionally photoorientable, because radiation is then used for polymerization or crosslinking if linear polarized light is used, for example by passing through the polarization filter of the LC display, can simultaneously perform the orientation of the layer or at least the induction of the preferred direction or the setting of the tilt angle.
- orientation can advantageously also be produced by rubbing, as in the case of conventional orientation layers, because it has surprisingly been found that this orientation method also works with electrode layers made of organic, electrically conductive materials.
- Fig. 1 shows a schematic representation of a cross section through a conventional LC display according to the St.dT and 2 shows a schematic cross-sectional representation of an LC display which contains the structure according to the invention.
- PEDT / PSS polyethylene dioxythiophene polystyrene sulfonate
- the layer containing PEDT / PSS is produced by adding a thiophene, such as 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene, and a polyacid, such as polystyrene sulfonic acid, to the solution of an oxidizing agent, such as potassium peroxodisulfate, in water, and then for about 8 hours is stirred, the resulting polythiophene dispersion is then - optionally after mixing with a binder such as polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl acetate - applied to the substrate by spraying, dipping or by a printing process, and then dried and tempered.
- the layer thicknesses are between approximately 10 nm and approximately 1 ⁇ m, preferably between approximately 100 nm and approximately 500 nm.
- Layer 4 is structured. Unless a printing method has been used, the structuring is carried out photolithographically by applying a photoresist layer to the layer 4, which is irradiated and developed in accordance with the desired structure, and then etching away the exposed areas of the layer 4 when the layer material ITO with HBr or HC1 and HNO3, and if the material is organic, such as PEDT / PSS, with an organic solvent or strongly basic solutions. Alternatively, it is also possible to destroy the conductivity in the layer material by selective treatment with a potassium permanganate solution at the treated areas.
- the number of layers is reduced by two and, in their manufacture, at least the number of steps which have to be carried out when applying two orientation layers and which, with a favorable selection of the starting materials for the conductive polymer and / or the binder, can save considerably more process steps.
- materials can also be saved, which is important from cost considerations and with regard to the environmental compatibility of the process.
- the expensive sputtering process is saved compared to the ITO electrodes already in use today.
Abstract
