近時、 パーソナルコンピュータ向けモニターや薄型 T V等の表示装置として透 過型の液晶表示 (ディスプレイ) 装置が多用されており、 このような液晶表示装 置では、 通常、 液晶素子の背面に面状の照明装置即ちバックライト (面光源装 置) が配設されている。 この面光源装置は、 例えば冷陰極放電管等の線状光源を 面状の光に変換する機構とされている。 具体的には、 液晶素子の背面直下に光源を配設する方法や、 側面に光源を設置 し、 ァクリル板等の透光性の導光体を用いて面状に光を変換して面光源を得る方 法 (サイ ドライト方式) が代表的であり、 光出射面にはプリズムアレー等からな る光学素子を配設して所望の光学特性を得る機構とされている。 従来のサイ ドライト方式の面光源装置は、 図 4 4に示されるように透光性の平 板からなる基板即ち導光体 1の一側端に当該側端面 1 aに沿うように線状光源 2 を配設し、 この線状光源 2を覆うようにリ フレクタ 3が取り付けられ、 線状光源 2による直接光とリフレクタ 3で反射された反射光とが導光体 1に、 光入射端面 である一側端面 1 aから内部に入射する機構とされている。 導光体 1の一表面 1 bは光出射面とされ、 この光出射面 1 bの上にはほぼ三角 プリズム状のアレー 4を形成した調光シート 5が頂角を観察者側に向けて配設さ れ、 他方、 導光体 1における光出射面 1 bとは反対側の面 1 cには光散乱性ィン キにより多数のドット 6 a、 6 b、 6 c……を所定のパターンで印刷形成してな る光取り出し機構 6が設けられている。 このような光取り出し機構 6が形成されている導光体 1における光出射面 1 b とは反対側の面 1 c側には、 この面 1 cに近接して反射シート 7が配設されてい る。 また、 従来のこの種の面光源装置の別な例としては、 図 4 5に示ざれるよう にほぼ三角プリズム状のアレー 4を形成した調光シ一ト 5が頂角を導光体 1の光 出射面 1 b側に向けて光出射面 1 b上に配設されている。 そして、 導光体 1の光出射面 1 bとは反対側の面 1 cに設けられる光取り出し 機構 8は、 各表面が粗面に形成されている多数の突起部 8 a、 8 b、 8 c……か ら構成されている。 このようなサイ ドライ ト方式の面光源装置は、 軽量、 薄型と いう液晶表示装置の一般的特徴をより有効に引き出すことができることから、 携 帯用パーソナルコンピュータ等の液晶表示装置のバックライ トとして多く使用さ れている。 しかしながら、 これら従来の透過型液晶ディスプレイ装置は、 構造が依然とし て複雑であるという問題があった。 その理由は、 特に面光源装置において所望の 光学特性を得ることのできる構造簡素な照明光学系が得られていなかつたために 当該面光源装置の構造を複雑化せざるを得ず、 その結果コストが高くなる等、 こ の種の液晶ディスプレイ装置の普及の妨げになっている。 すなわち、 図 4 4及び図 4 5に示される、 例えば透過型液晶ディスプレイ装置 のバックライ ト光学系として用いる面光源装置では、 面光源装置からの照明光を 可能な限り有効に利用するためプリズムシート等の光学シート類を多用していた c そのため、 照明光学系の構造が複雑となり、 その結果組立て性が悪く、 しかも歩 留まりも低いことから、 高コスト化を招いていた。 本発明の目的は、 かかる従来の問題点を解決するためになされたもので、 新規 な構造簡素で照明光線の利用効率に優れた照明システムに基づき、 新規な導光体 及び新規な光制御部材である光反射シートを用いることで光の有効利用を図り、 しかも構造が簡単で且つ組立て性に優れた安価な面光源装置を提供することにあ る。 発 明 の 開 示
本発明は面光源装置であり、 前述した技術的課題を解決するために以下のよう に構成されている。 すなわち、 本癸明の面光源装置は、 透明な合成樹脂からな 板 (シート) 状に形成され、 一表面を光出射面とする導光体と、 この導光体の少 なくとも一側端部近傍に配設された光源とから構成され、 この光源を点灯した際 に導光体の光出射面から出射する出射光が、 光源の配置されている導光体の側端 部表面に直角な方向に対する出射角度分布のピークが光出射面の法線 (垂直線) から ± 1 5度以内にあり、 出射角度分布の半値幅が ± 3 0度以内にあることを特 徴とする。 また、 本発明の面光源装置では、 導光体の光出射面と反対側の面側に光反射シ ートが配置され、 光源から導光体に入射した光線を光出射面と反対側の面から出 射させて光反射シートで反射させ、 この反射光を'導光体に再入射させて導光体の 光出射面から出射させ、 その時の出射光が導光体の側端部表面に直角な方向に対 する出射角度分布のピークが前記光出射面の法線 (垂直線) から ± 1 5度以内に あり、 出射角度分布の半値幅が土 3 0度以内にあることを特徴とする。 更に、 本発明の面光源装置では、 導光体の光出射面と反対側の面に光取り出し 機構が設けられ、 この光取り出し機構により光源から導光体に入射した光線の大 部分を光出射面と反対側の面から出射させて光反射シートで反射させるようにし たことを特徴とする。 更にまた、 本発明の面光源装置は、 一表面を光出射面とする導光体と、 この導 光体に設けられた光取り出し機構と、 導光体の側端部に配設された光源と、 導光 体の光出射面と対向する面側に配置された光反射シートとを含み、 光取り出し機 構は導光体より出射する光線の少なくとも 6 5 %以上を光反射シートの側に出射 する機構とされ、 光反射シートは、 傾斜した反射面からなるほぼ同一及び Z又は ほぼ相似形の基本ュニットがピッチ 5 0 0 0 μ m以下にて多数配列して形成され ていることを特徴とする。 このような特徴を備える本発明の面光源装置において、 導光体の少なくとも一 方の表面に、 波板状の凹凸をピッチ 5 0 0 i m以下で設けることが好ましく、 そ の場合、 波板状の凹凸の尾根線は光源の配設された導光体側端部にほぼ垂直な方 向とすることが好ましい。 . また、 本発明の面光源装置において、 光取り出し機構を、 導光体の光出射面と 対向する面側に設けられた多数の凸状突起を配置してなるパターンで形成するこ とが好ましい。 この時、 凸状突起の深さ hと最小開口幅 Wm i nとで定義される 値 h ZWm i nは、 0 . 5以上とされていることが好ましい。 更に、 本発明の面光源装置では、 反射面上に透明絶縁性物質によるコート層を 設けることが好ましい。 その場合、 金属物質としては銀若しくはアルミニウムで あり、 且つそのコート層が抵抗率 1 . 0 X 1 6 6 Ω · c m以上の透明物質からなる ことが好ましい。 更にまた、 本発明の面光源装置では、 光反射面上に設けられた光透過性物質か らなるコート層の表面は平滑面とされていることが好ましい。 そして、 このコー ト層の平滑な表面には印刷パターンが設けられていることが好ましい。 図面の簡単な説明

以下、 本発明の面光源装置及びこれを用いた液晶ディスプレイ装置を図に示さ れる実施形態について更に詳細に説明する。 図 1及び図 2は本発明の一実施形態 に係る面光源装置 1 0の主要部を概略的に示す部分的な斜視図及び断面図である c この実施形態に係る面光源装置 1 0は、 透光性の平板からなる基板即ち導光体 1 1を備え、 この導光体 1 1の一側端には当該側端面 1 2に沿うように線状光源 1 3が配置されている。 この線状光源 1 3は、 蛍光管又は L E Dアレー等を用い ることができるが、 特にこれらに限定されるものではない。 線状光源 1 3として は、 発光効率に優れ、 小型化の容易な冷陰極管の利用が最も好適である。
(光源の配置形態)
また、 線状光源 1 3の配置形態としては、 この態様に限定されるものではなく、 この他にも、 一側端部にのみ冷陰極管が配設された 1灯式の態様、 一側端部に 2 本の冷陰極管が配設された 2灯式の態様、 1灯又は 2灯の冷陰極管が一側端部に 配設され、 これが対向する側端部にも設けられ、 合計 2灯又は 4灯となっている 態様等が代表的である。
(光源の態様)
また、 光源の態様として、 本発明においてはなにも線状光源に限定されるもの ではなく、 例えば小型の面光源装置では図 3に示されるように L E D等の点光源 を用いることもできる。 すなわち、 図 3 ( a ) は、 導光体 1 1のコーナー部を平 面で見て三角形状にカツトして形成されたコーナーカツト面に、 点光源である L E D 3 9を配置した例を示している。 また、 図 3 ( b ) は、 導光体 1 1の一側端 部に光学ロッド 4 0を近接配置し、 この光学ロッド 4 0の端面に点光源である L E D 3 9を配置した例を示している。
(導光体とリフレクタ)
この導光体 1 1の一側端には、 線状光源 1 3を覆うようにリフレクタ 1 4が取 り付けられ、 線状光源 1 .3による直接光とリ フレクタ 1 4で反射された反射光と が導光体 1 1に、 光入射端面である一側端面 1 2から内部に入射する機構とされ ている。 導光体 1 1は、 例えば、 板厚が約 4 mm程度の四角形状をした透光性の薄板で あり、 図 1及び図 2で見て上面である一方の表面が光を出射する光出射面 1 5で あり、 これとは反対側の他方の表面 (図 1及び図 2で見て下面) は光出射面と対 向する面 1 6である。 図 1において、 符号 1 7は導光体 1 1の光出射面 1 5に垂 直な線、 即ち導光体 1 1の法線を示している。
(光反射シートの構造と配置)
導光体 1 1の光出射面 1 5とは反対側の面 1 6側に近接して光反射シート 1 8 が配設されている。 光反射シート 1 8は、 傾斜した反射面 1 9 aを備える多数の 基本ュニット 1 9が微細なピッチ Pで基材 2 0の表面に形成されて構成されてい る。 ここで、 基本ュニット 1 9とは、 図 4〜図 1 1に示されるようにほぼ同一及 び Z又はほぼ相似形状の傾斜した反射面 1 9 aの集合体として得られる光反射シ ート 1 8の基本形状単位を意味する。 すなわち、 基本ュニット 1 9とは、 それ以上分割すると同一性もしくは相似性 が消失してしまう最少の形状単位, 所謂ユニットセルである。 また、 ピッチ Pと は、 図 4〜図 1 1に示されるように、 これら基本ュニット 1 9の配列によって作 られる基本周期の内、 最小の長さとして定められる。 (導光体に設けられた光取り出し機構)
更に、 導光体 1 1には光取り出し機構 2 1が設けられている。 この光取り出し 機構 2 1は、 導光体 1 1に入射した光線を選択的に光反射シート 1 8の側に出射 させるように構成され、 具体的には光反射シート 1 8の側に導光体 1 1からの出 射光線の 6 5 %以上、 より好ましくは 7 0 %以上、 さらに好ましくは 7 5 %以上 の光束が出射するように構成することが必要であり、 この要件を満足する限りに おいて用いられる光取り出し機構は特に限定されるものではない。 ここで、 導光体 1 1から出る全出射光線の少なくとも 6 5 %以上を光反射シー ト 1 8側に出射させるために当該導光体 1 1に設けられる光取り出し機構 2 1と しては各種の態様が考えられ、 特に限定はされない。 しかし、 最も好適な態様と しては、 図 2 0に示されるように導光体 1 1における光出射面 1 5とは反対側の 面 (光反射シート側の面) 1 6に多数の凸状突起 2 2を所定のパターンで形成し た光取り出し機構 2 1を挙げることができる。
(光取り出し機構における凸状突起の各種形状) .
更に、 光反射シート 1 7側に大部分の光線成分 2 8を出射させる機能を果たす 凸状突起 2 2としては、 図 3 0及び図 3 1に示される種々の形状を挙げることが できる。 図 3 0 ( a ) に示される凸状突起 2 2は横断面が楕円形のものであり、 図 3 0 ( b ) に示される凸状突起 2 2は横断面が長方形状のものである。 また、 図 3 1 ( a ) に示される凸状突起 2 2は横断面が長方形状で、 下端が尖った三角 形状のものである。 更に、 図 3 1 ( b ) に示される凸状突起 2 2は横断面が菱形 に近い長方形である。
(光取り出し機構の各種態様)
この他にも、 図 2 1〜図 2 5に示されるように、 各種の表面形状設計によって- 導光体 1 1から出射する大部分の出射光線が光反射シート 1 8の方向に向かうよ うに設計することが可能となるのである。 すなわち、 図 2 1に示される態様は、 導光体 1 1における光反射シート 1 8側の面 1 6に断面三角形状の多数の突起 2 3を所定のパターンで形成して光取り出し機構 2 1としたものである。 また、 図 2 2に示される態様は、 導光体 1 1における光反射シート 1 8側の面 1 6に凹状のへこみ 2 4 aを形成することで相対的に突出部 2 4 bを形成して光 取り出し機構としたものである。 更に、 図 2 3に示される態様は、 導光体 1 1の 光出射面 1 5に断面 V字状の多数の溝部 2 5を所定の間隔で形成し、 これにより 光取り出し機構 2 1としたものである。 更にまた、 図 2 4に示される態様は、 導光体 1 1における光反財シート 1 8側 の面 1 6に断面 V字状の多数の溝部 2 6を所定の間隔で形成して光取り出し機構 2 1としたものである。 また、 図 2 5に示される態様は、 導光体 1 1の光出射面 1 5に断面山形状の多数の突起 2 7を所定の間隔で形成することにより光取り出 し機構 2 1としたものである。 これら各種態様の他にも、 特定方向に対して前方散乱性を有する散乱体を導光 体 1 1内に設ける態様、 ホログラム素子、 表面レリーフ素子等の回折光学素子を '導光体 1 1の表面に設ける態様等、 前述したように光反射シート 1 8の側に導光 体 1 1からの出射光線の少なくとも 6 5 %以上を出射することができる光取り出 し機構であれば、 特に限定されるものではない。
(出射方向についての選択性測定手段)
ここで、 本発明において用いられる導光体 1 1は、 該導光体 1 1より出射する 全光束に対する光反射シート側に選択的に出射する光束の割合が、 少なくとも 6 5 %以上であることが、 本発明による光学設計の効果を有効に機能させるために 必要であることは前述した通りであるが、 この光束が出射する方向についての選 択性を測定する測定手段は概略下記の通りである。 すなわち、 先ず通常光反射シートが配設される位置にほぼ完全に光を吸収する 黒色のシート 3 7 (植毛紙等) を配設し、 図 2 6に示される如く、 導光体 1 1を 通常の向きにセットして積分球 3 8中で点灯させ、 この時に得られた導光体 1 1 の光出射面側から発せられる全光束量を∑ aとする。 次に、 導光体 1 1の向きを通常とは裏返しにセットし (本来、 光反射シートの 側に向く面が光出射面側に来るようにセットする。 ) 、 同様に積分球 3 8中で点 灯させ、 この時に得られた導光体 1 1の光出射面と反対側の面から発せられる全 光束量を∑ bとする。 この際に、 得られる数値、 ∑ b / (∑ a +∑ b ) X 1 0 0 が光反射シートの側に選択的に出射する光束の割合 (%) となるのであり、 この 値が少なくとも 6 5 %以上、 より好ましくは 7 0 %以上、 さらに好ましくは 7 5 %以上とされるのである。

また、 面光源装置として、 面内で照明強度を一定に保っため、 光取り出し機構 2 1として凸状突起 2 2からなるパターンの外形は、 光源 1 3が配設された部分 から離れるにしたがって光の取り出し効率が高められるように調整されている。 この調整態様としては、 凸状突起 2 2の開口部の面積が増加する態様、 ほぼ同一 形状の凸状突起 2 2が用いられ、 光源 1 3から離れるにしたがって凸状突起 2 2 の配置密度が増加する態様等が挙げられる。 これらの調整態様の内、 特に調整が容易であるのは、 凸状突起 2 2の開口部の 面積が増加する態様である。 しかし本発明では前述した通り、 凸状突起 2 2によ り実現される光取り出し機構 2 1は導光体 1 1内を伝搬する光線を光反射シート 1 8の側にのみ選択的に出射する機能を果たす必要があり、 深さ hと最小開口幅 Wm i nで定義される値 h /Wm i nが高い値に保たれているのが好ましい。 このことから、 単純に凸状突起 2 2の開口部の面積を増加させてしまったので は、 光源 1 3から離れた位置で h /Wm i nの値が好ましい値から外れてしまう ことも想定される。 従って、 h ZWm i nの値を一定に保ちながら凸状突起 2 2 の開口部の面積を増加させるパターン形状が最も好ましいのであり、 具体的には、 図 2 7に示されるように光源 1 3が配設された位置から離れるに従って一軸方向 に凸状突起 2 2の開口部が拡大しているパターン形状が最も好ましい。 また、 別な調整態様として、 図 2 8に示されるように、 h ZWm i n、 h /W m a x等の値が前述した好適な範囲とされた、 ほぼ同一形状の凸状突起を用い、 光源 1 3が配設された位置から離れるにしたがって配置密度を高くするようにし たパターン形状を用いる態様も好適に使用される。 特に、 この態様では、 ほぼ同 一形状の凸状突起 2 2を用いることから、 凸状突起 2 2単一の形状について、 光 反射シート 1 8の側に選択的に光線を出射させる能力が極めて高い形状とするこ とができるため、 面光源装置 1 0の効率向上に最も好ましい態様である。
(光取り出し機構の形状的制約)
本発明の面光源装置において、 このような光取り出し機構 2 1に要求される形 状的な制約は、 あくまで、 前述したように光反射シート 1 8の側に導光体 1 1か らの出射光線の 6 5 %以上を出射させるようにするという観点で決定されるべき である。 例えば、 このことを図 2 9 ( a ) 、 ( b ) を参照して更に詳細に説明すると、 図 2 1で示した断面三角形状の突起 2 3を導光体 1 1の面 1 6に形成する場合に は、 尖端部の頂角 j3として好ましくは 9 0度以下、 より好ましくは 7 0度以下、 さらに好ましくは 5 0度以下であることがよレ、。 すなわち、 図 2 9 ( b ) に示されるように導光体 1 1の面 1 6に形成される突 起 2 3の頂角 βを大きくしてその断面形状を山形状にするにしたがって、 突起 2 3による全反射によって導光体 1 1の光出射面 1 5方向に出射してしまう不要な 光線成分 3 1が増大するためであり、 小さな頂角を有する三角形状の断面形状を 用いることによって、 図 2 9 ( a ) に示されるように本発明における好適な光線 の軌跡 (光反射シート 1 8での反射過程を経て導光体 1 1の法線 1 .7方向に出射 する光線成分 2 9 ) を描く光線成分 2 8、 2 9を増加させることが可能となるの である。 また、 別な例について説明すれば、 図 2 0に示される凸状突起 2 2を用いた態 様では、 図 3 0 ( a ) に示されるようにこの凸状突起 2 2の高さ、 言い換えれば 導光体 1 1内から見た状態での凸状突起 2 2の深さ hと最小開口幅 Wm i nで定 義される値 h ZWm i nが、 好ましくは 0 . 5以上、 より好ましくは 0 . 6以上、 さらに好ましくは 0 . 7以上とされる。 このようにすることで、 凸状突起 2 2に 入射した光線は大部分が光反射シート 1 8の側に出射するようになるのである。 図 2 0に示される凸状突起 2 2は、 図 3 0 ( a ) から明らかなように横断面が 楕円形のものであつたが、 図 3 0 ( b ) に示されるように横断面が長方形状であ る場合には、 横断面長方形の短辺寸法が最小開口幅 Wm i nとなる。 このような 条件を満足するように凸状突起 2 2を設計すれば、 導光体 1 1からの出射光線の 少なくとも 6 5 %以上を光反射シート 1 8の側に出射させるようにする好適な形 状を定めることができる。 更に、 凸状突起 2 2に入射した光線を十分に光反射シート 1 8側に出射させる ためには、 凸状突起 2 2の開口部形状として図 3 0及ぴ図 3 1に示されるように 最大開口幅 Wm a xと凸状突起 2 2の深さ hとによって定義される値 h ZWm a xが好ましくは 0 . 5以上、 より好ましくは 0 . 7以上、 更に好ましくは 0 . 9 以上とされる。 この状況を更に詳しく説明すると、 図 3 2 ( a ) に示されるように、 最小開口 幅 Wm i nが好適なケースでは導光体 1 1内を伝搬する光線 3 0が凸状突起 2 2 の壁面にぶっかり易くなるため、 壁面にぶっかった光線は導光体 1 1内にもはや とどまっていられなくなり、 光反射シート 1 8の側に出射 (出射光線を符号 2 8 で示す) することになるのである。 しかしながら、 図 3 2 ( b ) に示される最小開口幅 Wm i nが不適当な範囲の ケースでは、 導光体 1 1内を伝搬する光線 3 0が凸状突起 2 2の底部にぶっかり 易くなるため、 図 3 2 ( b ) の光線の軌跡に示されるように凸状突起 2 2の底部 での全反射を経てから壁面にぶっかるため、 光反射シート 1 8の側に出射しない 光線成分 3 1が多数発生してしまうのである。 すなわち、 光反射シート 1 8の側 に光線を出射させるという観点において最も好適なのは図 3 2 ( c ) に示される ように最小開口幅 Wm i n、 最大開口幅 Wm a xともに好適な範 fflの場合である。 このように、 本発明において好適に用いられる、 図 2 0〜図 2 5に例示される 光取り出し機構としては、 その形状はあくまで、 光反射シート 1 8の側に導光体 から出射する光線の 6 5 %以上を出射させるようにするとの観点から決定される が、 更に詳細な設計についての考え方を説明する。
(光取り出し機構の設計理論)
まず、 光源として良く用いられる蛍光管等においては、 プラズマ放電により'得 られる紫外光が管壁に付着した蛍光体微粒子を励起して発光が得られるが、 ここ から得られる出射光線の出射角度分布はほぼあらゆる角度に対して一様な強度を 示す、 いわゆる拡散光源的な性質に近いものである。 そこで、 導光体の光入射面近傍を表す図 3 3において、 導光体に入射する光線 の入射角度分布をあらゆる角度に対して一定であるとする条件の下で、 導光体内 を伝搬する光線の幾何光学的な状態分布を考える。

(光取り出し機構における凸状突起を平滑面とすることについて)
また、 本発明においては導光体 1 1からの出射光線の大部分が光反射シート 1 8の側に出射するように構成されていることが極めて重要なのであり、 例えば、 前述した値 h /Wm i nなる値が好ましい領域にある導光体を得たとしても、 凸 状突起 2 2の側面や凸状突起 2 2の開口部周辺の面が、 金型精度等の原因で粗面 化されてしまっている場合には、 該粗面部分で光線が乱反射してしまい大部分の 光線を光反射シート 1 8の側に出射させることができなくなる状況も発生する。 すなわち、 凸状突起 2 2はできる限り平滑な表面から構成されていることが、 導光体 1 1からの出射光束の方向選択性を適切に保っために極めて重要なのであ り、 従来型の面光源装置に見られる単純な粗面や光散乱性微粒子による光散乱現 象を光取り出し機構とする態様では、 本発明の照明光学系の効果を十分に引き出 すことはできないのである。 より具体的には、 凸状突起 2 2の表面は J I S B 0 6 0 1に定められる十点平均粗さ R zの値が好ましくは 0 . 0 1〜 1 0 ιη、 より好ましくは 0 . 0 2〜4 i m、 さらに好ましくは 0 . 0 2〜2 ^ m、 特に好 ましくは 0 . 0 5〜1 の範囲とされ、 粗面部分による不要な光散乱 (光拡 散) 現象が生じないようにするのが良い。
(光反射シートの働き)
本発明の面光源装置においては、 前述したように光反射シート側に導光体 1 1 からの出射光線の大部分が出射する光学系とされるが、 この出射光線は、 通常、 図 2に示されるように光反射シート 1 8に対して斜めに入射する指向性を有する 光線 2 8となる場合が多い。 そこで、 本発明の面光源装置においては、 図 2に示されるように光反射シート 1 8に設けられた傾斜した反射面 1 9 aからなるほぼ同一及び Z又はほぼ相似形 の基本ュニット 1 9の効果によって、 導光体 1 1から光反射シート 1 8の側に選 択的に出射した光線 2 8は、 導光体 1 1の正面方向に方向が変角され、 その結果、 面光源装置 1 0を正面から見た際に、 極めて高い照明強度が得られるようになる のである。 このことは、 図 4 4及び図 4 5に示される従来型の面光源装置に比べて照明光 学系の構成を極めて単純化できるものであり、 従来型の面光源装置ではプリズム ァレー等の屈折型の光学系によつて光線の集光機能や変角機能を果たしていたの に対して、 本発明においては、 光反射シート 1 8に設けられた傾斜した反射面 1 9 aからなるほぼ同一及び/又はほぼ相似形の基本ュ-ット 1 9を、 例えば凹面 鏡のような形状に設計する等によって、 集光機能や変角機能等の所望の光学的機 能を光反射シート 1 8に持たせることが可能となり、 同等な光学的性能を保持し ながら、 極めて構造が簡素化された面光源装置を提供することができるのである
(光反射シートの具体的説明)
ここで、 本発明において用いられる光反射シート 1 8は屈曲性を有した厚み 1 0 0 0 μ m以下程度の基材 2 0が好ましいが、 厚み等の形態は応用対象によって 適宜選択され、 必ずしもこれに限定されるものではない。 また、 反射率は高効率 化の観点から高い反射率を有する材質からなることが望ましい。 本発明における高い反射率を有する材質とは、 人が目視する画像表示用途に主 として用いられることから、 可視光線スぺク トルの代表的な波長域における反射 率が高い値を有する材質であることを意味する。 すなわち、 J I S— Z 8 1 2 0に定められる如く、 可視光線スペク トル領域に おいて入射光束エネルギーに対する反射光束エネルギーの比が前記の値となるの であり、 通常 7 0 %以上、 好ましくは 7 5 %以上、 さらに好ましくは 8 5 %以上、 特に好ましくは 8 8 %以上、 極めて好ましくは 9 1 %以上とされるのである。 また、 本発明において、 光反射シート部で色調が変化することは避けるべきで あり、 可視光線スぺク トルの範囲において出来る限りフラッ.トな反射特性を有す ることが好ましい。 したがって、 可視スペク トルのほぼ中心に位置する 5 5 0 n mにおける分光反射率の値を用いて反射率とし、 好ましい値の範囲を規定するこ ともできる。 加えて、 上記の反射率は反射を実質的に起こす傾斜面の表面に位置する材質の 反射率を意味するのであり、 具体的には傾斜面の表面部に銀やアルミニウムに代 表されるように、 高い反射率を有し、 色調変化が少ない材質が設けられることが 好ましい。 また、 反射面の上に透明なコート層等を設ける場合があるが、 ここで 言う反射率はコート層等のない、 金属材質等の反射に実質的に寄与する材質自体 の表面の反射率を意味するのである。 また、 反射の指向性に関しては鏡面反射及び拡散反射は、 必要とする照明光の 光学特性に応じて、 適宜、 選択されるものであるが、 一般的に高い指向性を得た い場合には銀やアルミニウム等からなる鏡面反射層が好適に用いられ、 広い出射 角度分布を得たい場合には白色顔料を混練した樹脂や発泡性樹脂等からなる拡散 反射層が好適に用いられる。
(光反射シートに形成される基本ュニットについての具体的説明)
また、 基本ユニット 1 9の配列が画面上で認識できなくなるようにするため、 ほぼ同一及び Z又はほぼ相似形の基本ュニット 1 9の配列ピッチ Pはできる限り 微細化されていることが重要であり、 具体的には 5 0 0 0 μ m以下、 好ましくは
Ι Ο Ο Ο μ πι以下、 より好ましくは 5 0 0 μ m以下とされる。 光反射シート 1 8の表面に設けられる傾斜した反射面 1 9 aからなるほぼ同一 及び Z又はほぼ相似形の基本ュニット 1 9として、 代表的には図 4 ( a ) 、 ( b ) に示されるように基本ュニット 1 9が断面鋸歯状とされる力 或いは図 5 ( a ) 、 ( b ) に示されるように基本ユニット 1 9が山形状とされ、 基本ュニッ ト 1 9がー軸方向にのみ周期性を有している構造で、 ピッチ 3 0 0 0 μ m以下、 好ましくは 8 0 0 m以下、 より好ましくは 3 0 0 μ m以下で、 光反射シート 1 8を上方から見た際に尾根線 1 9 bが平行に配列した、 平行直線状で且つ平坦な 傾斜反射面 1 9 aからなる基本ュニット 1 9の配列が用いられている態様が挙げ られる。 これは、 図 4 ( a ) 、 (b ) や図 5 ( a ) 、 ( b ) に示されるように傾斜した 平坦な反射面 1 9 aの尾根線 1 9 bがほぼ平行配列した態様では、 ダイヤモンド バイ トゃエンドミルを用いた切削加工が適用し易いため、 賦形のための金型製作 が容易であり、 微細化が行い易く、 量産性も極めて高いためである。 また、 「多数の基本ュニット 1 9の各尾根線 1 9 が平行な状態に配列され る」 とは、 完全に平行な状態が保たれていることを意味するのではなく、 ほぼ並 列して配列されているということを意味している。 すなわち、 図 1 6に示される 如く、 隣接した尾根線どうしが僅かにガタツキながら配列している態様等も実施 可能なのであり、 このような態様では液晶パネルのゲ一トアレーとの光学的な干 渉が予防されて、 バックライ ト装置としての好ましい照明光特性を得ることが可 能となる。 このような平行直線状で且つ平坦な傾斜反射面 1 9 aが多数配列した光反射シ ート 1 8を用いることで、 前述の凸状突起 2 2からなるパターンを光取り出し機 構 2 1とし且つ導光体から出射する光束の大部分が光反射シート 1 8の配設側に 向かうよう設計された導光体 1 1からの出射光線が、 平行直線状で且つ平坦な傾 斜反射面 1 9 aの効果によって導光体 1 1の法線 1 7方向に反射されるため、 面 光源装置 1 0として極めて好適な特性を備えた照明光線を得ることができるので ある。 図 1 2に示されるように、 ほぼ同一及び/又はほぼ相似形の基本ュニット 1 9 に用いられる傾斜した反射面 1 9 aの傾斜角度 αとして好適な範囲は、 用いる光 取り出し機構 2 1の形態によって様々であり、 導光体 1 1からの出射光線の方向 を光出射面 1 5の法線 1 7方向に変換するという観点で、 適宜決められるべきも のである。 例えば、 光取り出し機構 2 1として図 2 0に示されるように凸状突起 2 2を用 いる態様、 或いは図 2 1に示されるように断面三角形状の突起 2 3を用いる態様 では、 傾斜した反射面 1 9 aの傾斜角度 αが好ましくは 5 0度〜 7度の範囲、 よ り好ましくは 4 0度〜 1 0度の範囲、 さらに好ましくは 3 4度〜 1 5度の範囲が 好適に用いられる。 また、 各基本ユニット 1 9を構成する傾斜した反射面 1 9 aの断面は、 図 6及 び図 7に示されるように凹状となっていることが集光性の観点からは好ましい: これは、 本発明において好適に用いられる平行直線状で且つ傾斜した反射面が多 数配列した態様のみならず、 図 8〜図 1 1に示されるように凹面鏡状の基本ュニ ット 1 9が配列した態様等においても好適に用いられる。 この際にも、 傾斜した反射面 1 9 aの傾斜角度ひとして好適に用いられる範囲 は導光体 1 1からの出射光線の方向を光出射面 1 5の法線 1 7方向に変換すると いう観点で決定されるべきであり、 例えば、 図 2 0及び図 2 1に示されるような 光取り出し機構 2 1として凸状突起 2 2或いは断面三角形状の突起 2 3を用いる 各態様では、 図 1 3に示されるように凹状断面の中心部での接線の傾斜角度 αが 好ましくは 5 0度〜 7度の範囲、 より好ましくは 4 0度〜 1 0度の範囲、 さらに 好ましくは 3 4度〜 1 5度の範囲とされる。 このような断面凹状の反射面 1 9 aからなる基本ュニット 1 9を反射素子とし て光反射シート 1 8に設けることによって、 導光体 1 1に設けられた光取り出し 機構 2 1から出射するブロードな拡がりを有する光束 2 8を、 よりシャープな角 度特性を持つ光束 2 9 (より平行光束に近い光束) に変換しながら、 導光体 1 1 の法線 1 7方向に出射させることができるようになるのであり、 言い換えれば、 凹面鏡ミラーの集光効果によって導光体 1 1からの出射光線をよりコリメートさ れた導光体 1 1の法線 1 7方向に対してに極めて輝度の高い出射光線に変換する ことができるのである。 従って、 従来型の面光源装置では、 プリズムアレー等の製造が困難で高価な部 材を用いて実現していた集光効果を、 このような部材を用いずとも実現可能にな るのであり、 ほぼ同等な光学特性を保ちながら、 面光源装置を極めて簡略化され た構成にすることができるようになり、 組立て工程数の低減、 歩留まりの向上、 ゴミ混入確率の低減、 低コス ト化等、 実用的な面光源装置として極めて多くの利 点を備えているのである。
(輝線防止効果についての説明)
また、 従来型の面光源装置では、 図 3 5に示されるように光源 1 3が配設され る導光体 1 1の側端部 1 2において輝線 3 2と呼ばれる外観を悪化させる現象が 発生していた。 しかし、 これは導光体 1 1の側端部 1 2近傍で導光体 1 1の上下 面に反射シート 3 3を介して入射する光線が最大の原因であり、 この輝線 3 2を 除去するためにリ フレクタ配置を変更したり、 或いは反射シート 3 3に光吸収性 の印刷を施す等して対策を施していたが、 これがさらなる構造の複雑化、 高コス ト化を招いていた。 しかしながら、 本発明の面光源装置においては、 前述の如く、 光反射シート 1 8には傾斜した反射面 1 9 aからなるほぼ同一及び Z又はほぼ相似形の基本ュニ ット 1 9が用いられるため、 図 3 6に示されるように従来型の面光源装置におい ては輝線成分となるべく入射した光線も、 傾斜した反射面 1 9 aからなる基本ュ ニット 1 9によって跳ね返され、 輝線として導光体 1 1上に出射することはもは やないため、 面光源としての外観品質も極めて優れたものとなるのである。
(集光性の観点から考察した基本ュ-ットの形状) ところで、 本発明における面光源装置の集光性の観点からは、 断面凹状で且つ 傾斜した反射面 1 9 aが基本ュニット 1 9に用いられる態様が好ましいことは、 前述した通りであるが、 この断面凹状で且つ傾斜した反射面 1 9 &は図1 5に示 されるように断面多角形状であることがさらに好ましい。 これは、 金型を製作す る際には、 一般的にはダイヤモンドバイ ト等を用いた切削加工が用いられるが、 バイト作成が容易であるのは断面多角形状であるためである。 その理由を更に詳 細に説明すると、 図 1 5に示される断面多角形状の凹状反射面 1 9 aでは、 当該 凹状反射面を形成している断面輪郭線が曲線ではなく、 直線で区画された 2つの 平坦な傾斜面 1 9 a— 1、 1 9 a— 2を連続させることによって凹状反射面を形 成しているからである。 また、 傾斜した反射面 1 9 aからなるほぼ同一及び 又 はほぼ相似形の基本ュニット 1 9の別な態様として、 図 9又は図 1 1に示される ように最大径 3 0 0 0 μ m以下、 好ましくは 8 0 0 μ m以下、 さらに好ましくは 3 0 0 m以下なる凹面鏡状の反射面 1 9 aが配列した構造が用いられている態 様が挙げられる。 このような態様では、 一方向のみではなく直交する 2方向に集 光を果たすことが可能となるため、 前述した平行直線状で且つ傾斜した反射面 1 9 aが多数配列した態様に比べて、 更に集光性を向上'させることが可能になるの である。 ここで、 上記凹面鏡状の反射面が配列した構造が用いられている態様において も、 凸状突起からなるパターン部分から出射する、 光反射シート側に向かう光線 成分を導光体の法線方向に反射するように形状設計されていることは言うまでも 無く、 これによつて、 2方向への集光と導光体正面方向への光束の方向変換を同 時に達成せしめ、 面光源装置として極めて優れた照明光線を得ることができるの である。 このように前述した実施形態の光反射シート 1 8では、 基本ュニット 1 9に断 面凹状の反射面 1 9 aが設けられていたが、 基本ュニット 1 9の反射面 1 9 aは 断面凹状に限定されるものではなく、 図 1 7に示されるように断面凸状に形成さ れていてもよい。 基本ュニット 1 9の反射面 1 9 aをこのように凸状反射面とす ることによつても光反射シートに入射した入射光の変角や出射角度分布の拡大等- 照明光学的に有用な光学的作用をもたらすことが可能となる。 また、 本発明において面光源装置の集光性をさらに向上させるためには、 導光 体の上面 1 5 (凸状突起からなるパターンが配されていない側の面) に、 図 3 7 に示されるような山形状の凹凸 3 4を、 もしくは図 3 8に示されるような波板状 の凹凸 3 5を、 更に図 3 9に示されるようなレンチキユラ一レンズ素子 3 6を設 けることが好ましい。 この際に、 山形状もしくは波板状の凹凸 3 4、 3 5又はレンチキュラーレンズ 素子 3 6の向きは、 光源 1 3が設配される側端部 1 2に対して尾根線がほぼ垂直 になるように設けられる。 これによつて、 光反射シート 1 8に設けられた断面凹 状等の傾斜した反射面 1 9 aから得られる集光効果と併せて、 極めて高い集光効 果を得ることが可能となるのである。 この状況についてさらに詳細に説明すると、 本発明においては、 図 2 0〜図 2 5に例示されるような光取り出し機構 2 1の効果によって、 図 2に示されるよう に、 ー且、 導光体 1 1からの出射光線の大部分 2 8が光反射シート 1 8の側に出 射される。 そして、 光反射シート 1 8に設けられた傾斜した反射面 1 9 aからな るほぼ同一/又はほぼ相似形の基本ュニット 1 9の効果によって、 出射光線の方 向は導光体 1 1の法線 1 7方向に変角され、 再度、 導光体 1 1に入射して導光体 に設けられた、 三角プリズムアレー等の山形状もしくは波板状の凹凸 3 4、 3 5 又はレンチキュラーレンズ素子 3 6によって集光されるのである。 そのため、 従来型の面光源装置においても三角プリズムアレー等を導光体 1 1 に一体的に形成して集光性を向上させるとの提案はあったが、 これらと比べて、 本発明の面光源装置は、 光学的観点からみた状況が全く異なるのであり、 集光性 という点で、 本質的に有利な光学系を得ることができるのである。 この状況は、 図 4 0 ( a ) 、 ( b ) に示されている。 すなわち、 従来型の面光源装置では導光体 1 1内から直接的に導光体 1 1の光 出射面 1 5方向に向かおうとする光線成分 3 1が多かったため、 図 4 0 ( b ) に 示されるように導光体 1 1の法線 1 7方向に向かわず、 本来集光を果たしたかつ た光線成分でもあっても、 図 4 0 ( b ) に示す光線の軌跡に見られるように、 導 光体 1 1と空気層との界面を一回しか経由しないため、 十分な集光を果たすこと ができなかったのである。 しかしながら、 本発明の面光源装置では、 図 4 0 ( a ) に示されるように導光 体 1 1からの出射光線の大部分 2 8が、 一旦、 光反射シート 1 8の側に出射され るため、 図 4 0 ( a ) に示す光線の軌跡に見られるように、 導光体 1 1と空気層 との界面を 2度も経ることが可能となるため、 導光体 1 1自体が厚みの厚いレン ズァレーシートとして機能することになり、 集光性という観点で格段に優れた性 能を得ることが可能となるのである。 より具体的にこの効果について考察するため、 幾何光学的に光出射面から出射 する光線の状態数分布を算出する。 導光体の光入射面 1 1側から見た断面図であ る図 4 0について、 導光体に設けられた光取り出し機構によって出射する光線の 出射角度を 7、 導光体上に設けられた三角プリズムアレーの登頂角を δとする。 従来型の三角プリズムアレーが設けられた導光体では光取り出し機構によって 選択的に光反射シート 1 8の側に出射光線を導く光学設計がなされていないため、 図 4 0 ( b ) の如く、 導光体内から直接三角プリズム部に入射し、 プリズム部で 屈折作用を受ける光成分 4 1が多数存在する。 このような光成分 4 1の出射角度 ζ bは yと δの関数として、

—方、 図 4 0 ( a ) に示される、 本発明の光反射シート 1 8の側に、 一旦、 出 射光線が出射し、 導光体がプリズムシートとして作用することができる光学系で は、 出射光線の出射角度分布 ζ aは、

と表される。 従って、 簡単な例として光取り出し機構からの出射光線が完全拡散光であって、 三角プリズム部の登頂角が 9 0度なる場合を考えると、 図 4 2の如く、 同一の状 態数密度を有する光線 3 4 1が図 4 0 ( a ) なる光学系を経た場合には、 出射光 線 2 9の出射角度の状態数密度は参照符号 3 4 2のように 4 5度付近にピークを 有する正面方向に多数の光線成分が集まった状態に変換され、 高い集光性を示す ことが解る。 これに対して、 従来型の光学系、 図 4 0 ( b ) では、 三角プリズム部によって 多少の集光作用は認められるものの、 符号 3 .4 3に示される如く、 正面から大き く外れた 0〜 3 0度付近に残存してしまう光線成分も多く、 十分な集光作用が得 られないのである。 すなわち、 本発明による、 一且、 光反射シート 1 8側に光線を出射させ、 導光 体 1 1それ自身をプリズムシートとして作用させる光学設計は、 集光性の確保に 極めて本質的な役割を果たしていることが解る。
山形状もしくは波板状の凹凸 (波状の表面形状を有した凹凸) 3 4、 3 5又は レンチキュラーレンズ素子 3 6としては、 集光性を増大させる等の光学的機能を 実現させるという観点で、 適宜、 形状設計されるものであり、 表面構造は特段限 定されるものではない。 しかしながら、 導光体 1 1に本来必要とされる、 側端か ら入射した光線を全反射条件に基づいて損失なく伝搬させるという機能を損なつ てしまっては、 面光源装置として機能を果たさなくなる。 そのため、 少なく とも、 山形状もしくは波板状の凹凸 3 4、 3 5又はレンチキ ユラ一レンズ素子 3 6の尾根線 3 4 a、 3 5 a、 3 6 aは入射光線が主として伝 搬する方向に対してほぼ平行になるように設けられる。 このようにすることで、 山形状もしくは波板状の凹凸 3 4、 3 5又はレンチキュラーレンズ素子 3 6によ つて全反射条件が乱され、 導光体 1 1中を光線が伝搬しなくなることはなくなる のである。 すなわち、 図 3 7〜図 3 9及び図 4 1に示されるように、 山形状もし くは波板状の凹凸 3 4、 3 5又はレンチキュラーレンズ素子 3 6は光源 1 3の配 設された側端部 1 2にほぼ垂直な方向とされる。 また、 導光体 1 1に設けられる、 三角プリズムアレー等に代表される山形状も しくは波板状の凹凸 3 4、 3 5又はレンチキュラーレンズ素子 3 6は、 視認でき ない程度にできる限り微細化されているのが望ましく、 少なく とも 5 0 0 μ πι以 下、 好ましくは 3 0 0 μ m以下、 更に好ましくは 2 0 0 m以下のピッチとされ る。 集光性、 加工の容易性の観点から好ましいのは図 3 7に示されるような三角プ リズムアレー 3 4を用いる態様であり、 図 4 0 ( a ) に示されるように、 導光体 1 1の出射面側に登頂角 δが 6 0〜 1 5 0度、 好ましくは 7 0度〜 1 2 0度、 更 に好ましくは 8 0度〜 1 1 0度なる三角プリズムァレーが設けられ、 光源 1 3の 配設された側端部 1 2に対してプリズムアレー 3 4の尾根線 3 4 aがほぼ垂直と なるようにした態様が用いられる。 このように導光体 1 1の光出射面 1 5に三角プリズムアレー 3 4を一体的に形 成したことにより、 前述したように導光体自体が厚みの厚いプリズムシ一トとし て機能することになるため、 容易に高い集光性を得ることが可能となるのである c このように光出射面 1 5に三角プリズムァレー 3 4を一体的に形成した導光体 1 1にも光反射シート 1 8の側に選択的に光線を出射させる光取り出し機構 2 1 が導光体 1 1における光出射面 1 5と対向する面 1 6に設けられるが、 図 2 3及 び図 2 5に示されるような、 導光体 1 1の光出射面 1 5側に光取り出し機構 2 1 が設けられる態様については、 図 4 1に示されるように導光体 1 1の光出射面 1 5と対向する面 1 6に三角プリズムアレー等の山形状の凹凸 3 4が設けられる。 この態様においても山形状の凹凸 3 4の尾根線 3 4 aは、 前述したように導光体 1 1の光入射面である側端部 1 2に対してほぼ垂直な方向とされていることは言 うまでもない。 前述したように凸状突起 2 2からなるパターンを光取り出し機構 2 1とし且つ 導光体から出射する光束の大部分が光反射シート 1 8の配設側に向かうよう設計 された導光体 1 1からの出射光線は、 光反射シート 1 8における傾斜反射面 1 9 aの効果によって導光体 1 1の法線 1 7方向に反射され、 しかも導光体 1 1の少 なくとも一方の表面には集光性等の光学特性を改良すべく設けられた山形状もし くは波板状の凹凸 3 4又はレンチキユラレンズ素子 3 6が存在するため、 非常に 簡素な構成であるにもかかわらず、 面光源装置 1 0として極めて品質の高い照明 光線を得ることができるのである。 なお、 図 1に示される実施形態の面光源装置 1 0のように、 導光体 1 1の一側 部 1 2にのみ線状光源 1 3を配設する場合には、 光出射面 1 5とは反対側の面に 図 2 0に示される態様、 即ち平行直線状で且つ鋸歯状の凹状反射面 1 9 aの基本 ユニット 1 9を配列して形成された光反射シート 1 8を配置することが好ましい が、 図 4 3に示されるように導光体 1 1の対向する両側部 1 2 a、 1 2 bにそれ ぞれ線状光源 1 3を配設する場合には、 光反射シート 1 8として図 7に示される 態様、 即ち平行直線状で且つ波形状の凹状反射面 1 9 aの基本ュニット 1 9を配 列して形成された光反射シート 1 8を使用することが好ましい。 (光反射シートの材質について)
本発明において光反射シート 1 8に用いられる反射材質については特に限定さ れるものではないが、 図 1 4に示されるように銀もしくはアルミニウムを表面に コーティングして反射層 4 2を形成し、 この表面を反射面 1 9 aとするのが製造 の容易性から最も好適である。 特に銀反射層を真空蒸着、 スパッタリ ング、 及び イオンプレーティング等のドライプロセスを用いて薄膜形成し、 表面にコーティ ングする方法が最も好ましい。 また、 反射層 4 2はなにも正反射性の金属材質による反射層のみに制限される ものではなく、 例えばチタニア等の白色顔料を混練したポリエステル樹脂による 拡散反射性の反射層を用いることもできる。 この場合には入射光線は拡散反射性 の反射面によって色々な方向に散乱されるため、 反射光の指向性を拡大すること が可能となり、 照明光線の視野角度特性を A g薄膜等の正反射性反射面を用いた 場合よりもさらに拡大することが可能となるのである。 更に、 例えば銀による真空蒸着をする以前に、 傾斜した反射面 1 9 aからなる ほぼ同一及び/又はほぼ相似形状の基本ュニット 1 9が賦形された基材シート表 面をサンドブラス ト加工する等して、 マット処理を施すこともできる。 このよう に処理することで、 正反射性の反射面に適度の光拡散性を持たせることができる ようになり、 出射光線の角度分布特性の拡大、 照明光線のぎらつき抑制、 或いは 液晶セルのゲートアレーとの干渉に由来するモアレ模様の発生防止等の効果を得 ることが可能となる。 拡散反射層の形成法としてはこの他にも、 発泡性ポリエステル樹脂、 発泡性ポ リオレフイン樹脂、 発泡性 A B S樹脂等から拡散反射性の反射層を得る態様、 基 材表面に白色顔科からなる塗料をコーティングする態様等が挙げられる。
(光反射シートへの保護層の設置) また、 銀反射層等の光沢性金属表面は非常に傷つき易く、 また酸化劣化等も発 生しやすい状態.にあるため、 図 1 4に示されるように表面には保護層 4 3として 紫外線硬化性ァクリル樹脂塗料を塗布する等して傷つき等による光学特性の悪化 を防止するのが好ましい。 さらには、 保護層 4 3としてガラスビーズ等に代表さ れる光透過性ビーズのコーティング層を設けることによって前述の傾斜した反射 面からなるほぼ同一及び Z又はほぼ相似形状の基本ュニットにマツト処理を施し たのと同一の効果を得ることもできるようになる。 加えてこの透明コート層 (保護層 4 3 ) に光学薄膜としての機能を持たせ、 入 射光線の制御性をさらに高度化することもできる。 例えば、 え / 4板、 ぇ/ 2板 等の光学薄膜を設けることもできるし、 これらの光学薄膜をさらに積層すること によってビームスプリッタ一機能や偏光変換機能等の入射光線の偏光状態を制御 する機能をも有した光反射シートを得ることも可能である。 ところで、 前述したコート層 4 3に代えて別な性質のコート層 4 4を、 図 1 8 に示されるように表面が平坦になるように設けてもよレ、。 このコート層 4 4につ いて更に詳述すると、 反射面 1 9 aが前述したように銀やアルミニウムで形成さ れると、 反射面 1 9 aは高い導電性を有することになる。 そのため、 光源点灯に 使用される電流のリークや短絡を招く問題が生じる。 これは、 前述したように大 型 L C Dバックライ トで一般的に用いられる冷陰極管等の放電管を光源とする、 高電圧の点灯電源を用いる構成では特に深刻な問題となる。 また、 別の問題として、 集光性等の光学特性の制御性の観点から正反射性を有する 銀やアルミニウムに代表される金属材質で反射層 4 2を形成した場合、 極めて経時変化 を起こしやすいため、 反射層 4 2が酸化劣化等の経時変化によって容易に光学特性を変 えてしまうことが起こる可能性があり、 もしこのような酸化劣化等の経時変化が起これ ば、 簡単に光学的な反射特性が変わってしまい、 照明光の品質を保持することが極めて 困難になることが予想され、 実用的な面光源装置が得られなくなる。 そのため、 銀若しくはアルミニウムからなる反射面 1 9 aには透明な絶縁性物 質からなるコート層 4 4を設けることが好ましい。 このコート層 4 4は、 好まし くは図 1 8及び図 1 9に示されるように反射面 1 9 aの凹状部を埋め尽く して表 面が平滑に形成される。 反射面 1 9 aの凹状部を埋め尽くすように透明な絶縁性 物質を配置してコート層 4 4とする時にその表面を平滑にすることについては、 以下のような理由による。
L C Dバックライ トでは光源近傍での輝線や暗部の捕正、 及び全体的な色調調 整が必要であるため、 光反射シート表面に印刷を施さなければならない場合が多 い。 すなわち、 光吸収性の黒色ドット 4 8 aからなるパターン 4 8や光拡散性の 白色ドッ ト 4 9 aからなるパターン 4 9等を光反射シート上に印刷することによ つて、 光源近傍での輝線や暗部を捕正し、 実用的な有効発光域を拡大することが できるようになるのである。 しかしながら、 図 1 6に示されるようにほぼ相似形の基本ュニットの表面形状 に併せて透明絶縁性物質によるコート層が設けられていたのでは、 基本ュニット の表面形状が光反射シート表面に残ってしまい、 印刷インキの 「にじみ」 や 「だ れ」 を生じてしまう。 従って、 これを防止するためにも光反射シートの表面は透 明樹脂等によって埋め込まれた平滑な面になっていることが好ましい。 より具体的には、 透明な樹脂からなるコート層 4 4の表面は、 J I S B O 6 0 5に規定される R zの値が 2 5 Αί m以下、 好ましくは 2 0 ^ m以下、 さらに好 ましくは 1 5 μ m以下とされる。 このようなコート層 4 4を形成するための絶縁 性物質としては、 例えばアク リル系、 ポリエステル系等の熱可塑性樹脂、 光硬化 性樹脂、 又は熱硬化性樹脂等に代表される透明樹脂、 或いは透明セラミ ックス (シリカ、 チタニア等が代表的) などが好ましい。 この絶縁物質からなるコート層 4 4は、 更に、 抵抗率が 1 . 0 X 1 0 6 Ω · c m 以上、 好ましくは 1 . 0 X 1 0 7 Ω · c m以上、 更に好ましくは 1 . 0 X 1 0 8 Ω • c m以上の透明樹脂が電気絶縁性の高さ、 製造の容易性、 低コスト等から最も 最適である。 また、 「透明な絶縁性物質」 との用語における 「透明」 とは、 全光 線透過率 8 5 %以上、 好ましくは 8 7 %以上、 さらに好ましくは 9 0 %以上であ ることを意味する。 また、 印刷パターンには、 図 1 9に示される如く、 光源近傍では明るい帯状の明部 (輝線) 等が発生して外観が悪化することが良く起こるため、 これを捕正するために設 けられる光お散反射性 (白色) や光吸収性 (黒色) の多数のドット 4 8 aからなるパタ ーン 4 8、 大型モジュールでは面内で色ムラが発生し易いため、 これを捕正するために 用いられる半透光性の多数のドット 4 9 aからなるパターン 4 9が代表的である。 光源近傍での帯状明部 (輝線) 等の発生による外観悪化を捕正するために設けられる パターン 4 8については輝線の捕正能力としては黒色が優れているが、 輝度の低下が発 生し易い。 これに対して白色は輝度低下が相対的に少ない。 図 1 9に示されるように、 光源が配設される光反射シート 1 8の側端部付近に主として集中的に設けられ、 パター ン 4 8を形成するドット 4 8 aのピッチ P 2は、 好ましくは 2〜4 0 0 μ m, より好ま しくは 5〜3 0 0 πι、 さらに好ましくは 1 0〜2 0 0 t mが用いられ、 パターンは一 側端 1 2から 3 O mm以内、 好ましくは 2 5 mm以内、 さらに好ましくは 2 0 mm以内 の範囲に設けられ、 配置密度が光源配設側端から離れるにしたがつて漸減するパターン とされている。 他方、 大型モジュールでの面内色ムラを補正するために用いられる半透光性の多数の ドット 4 9 aからなるパターン 4 9については、 光反射シート 1 8の広い範囲にわたつ て設けられ、 その配置密度は光源配設側端から離れるにしたがって徐々に増加するよう に形成される。 代表的には、 光源付近がより青みが強くなりすぎる傾向が良く認められ るため、 若干青みのかかった光透過性のインキを光源 1 3から離れるにしたがって配置 密度が大きくなるように印刷する態様が挙げられる。 この際にも、 パターン 4 9を形成 するドット 4 9 aのピッチ P 3は、 好ましくは 2〜4 0 0 μ πι、 より好ましくは 5〜3 0 0 さらに好ましくは 1 0〜2 0 0 mのピッチにて配置される。 更に、 光反射シート 1 8に設けられる光透過性物質によるコート層 4 4は、 屈折率が 異なる物質から構成された、 光散乱性を有する材質を用いてもよい。 例えば、 光透過性 物質によるコート層 4 4を形成する材料として好適に用いられるアクリル系光硬化性樹 脂中にチタニア等の無機系微粒子を分散させることによってこの様な効果を持たせるこ とが可能であり、 光散乱を発生させ、 該光反射シートに入射した光線が適度に散乱され る。 これによつて照明光線の制御性をさらに高めることができる。 このように本発明の面光源装置によれば、 ほぼ相似形の基本ュ-ット 1 9を完全に埋 め込むように光透過性物質によってコーティングし、 このコート層 4 4の表面に基本ュ ニット 1 9の形状が反映されないように平滑にした光反射シート 1 8を形成して、 これ を面光源装置 1 0に用いることによって、 光反射シート 1 8の表面に非常に微細なパタ ーン 4 8、 4 9を印刷することが出来るようになるため、 実用上極めて重要な、 光学特 性の改良、 例えば光源近傍での明部の発生防止や大型化した場合の色ムラの修正を行う ことができる。 本発明の好ましい態様においては、 光反射シート 1 8は樹脂材料によって形成 される。 特にポリエステル系樹脂、 アクリル系樹脂、 ポリカーボネート系樹脂、 ポリアミ ド系榭脂、 ポリアリ レート系樹脂又は環状ポリオレフイン系樹脂等に代 表される熱可塑性樹脂フィルムからな基材 2 0によって形成され、 凹状反射面ァ レーの形成には熱プレス成形による賦形、 もしくは光硬化性樹脂による賦形が好 適に用いられる。 その際、 好ましくはポリカーボネート、 ポリエステル、 ポリアリレート等に代 表される熱可塑性樹脂フィルムの加熱ロールによるエンボス加工が生産性の点か ら適当である。 また、 単に熱可塑性樹脂フィルムのみでは L C Dバックライ トに 用いる場合には剛性が不足し、 シートの撓みが問題となることがある。 すなわち、 シートが橈むことによって輝度ムラが悪化し、 外観が悪化する問題が生じる。 この問題に対する対策として、 熱可塑性樹脂フィルムの表面 (反射面形成側表 面とは反対側の表面) には、 接着剤 4 5を介して例えば二軸延伸ポリエステルや 二軸延伸ポリプロピレンに代表される延伸フィルム 4 6が張り合わされ、 必要な 剛性を確保する構造とされることが好ましい。 なお、 基材 2 0即ち熱可塑性樹脂 フィルムと延伸フィルム 4 6との張り合わせは、 接着剤 4 5の他に融着であって もよい。 このような光反射シート 1 8はプロジェクタ装置等の画像投影用スクリーンと して用いることもできる。 すなわち、 この光反射シートを画像投影用スク リーン として用いると、 プロジェクタ装置からの表示に寄与する光線成分のみを観察者 方向に投影し、 窓からの外光等がスクリーンに写り込まないため、 従来のように 部屋を暗く して画像を投影しなくても極めてコントラス トの高い画像を得ること が可能となり、 より実用性に優れたスク リーンを得ることができる。 特に、 ショ 一ルームでの展示用途、 航空機内での映写用途等に極めて好適であり、 周辺が明 るい環境下でも鮮明な表示画像を提供することができるようになる。

本発明において、 液晶ディスプレイ装置とは液晶分子の電気光学効果、 即ち光 学異方性 '(屈折率異方性) 、 配向性等を利用し、 任意の表示単位に電界印加或い は通電して液晶の配向状態を変化させ、 光線透過率や反射率を変えることで駆動 する、 光シャツタの配列体である液晶セルを用いて表示を行うものをいう。 具体的には、 透過型単純マト リタス駆動スーパーッイステツ ドネマチックモー ド、 透過型アクティブマ トリ クス駆動ツイステツ ドネマチックモード、 透過型ァ クティブマトリクス駆動インプレーンスィツチングモード、 透過型アクティブマ トリクス駆動マルチドメインヴアーチカルァラインドモード等の液晶表示素子が 挙げられる。 本発明の面光源装置をこれら液晶表示素子のパックライ ト光源手段として液晶 ディスプレイ装置を構成することにより、 前述した光反射シートを用いる面光源 装置の効果により、 薄型化 (シート少ない) 、 画像品質の向上、 特に輝線の少な い、 また構造が簡単で組立て性が向上し、 しかも歩留まりも高く、 更にはコス ト が低減した液晶ディスプレイ装置を得ることができる。 以下、 本発明を実施例により、 さらに詳細に説明するが、 本発明は、 その要旨 を越えない限り、 以下の実施例に限定されるものではない。
(実施例 1 )
導光体 1 1として 3 5 0 . 0 X 2 8 5 . O mm、 厚みが厚肉部 2 . 6 mm、 薄 肉部 0 . 6 mmなる短辺方向に楔形状のアクリル樹脂を使用し、 厚肉側の長辺部 に冷陰極管からなる線状光源 1 3を配設して、 線状光源 1 3から離れるにしたが つてピッチが徐々に狭くなるようにした断面三角形状の突起 2 3を設けた。 断面 三角形状の突起 2 3が設けられた導光体 1 1の成型には鏡面研磨を施した金型を ダイアモンドバイ トによって切削加工を施したものを用い、 定法の射出成型によ つてァクリル樹脂を成型することによって得た。 突起 2 3における断面三角形状の頂角は 3 0度とし、 突起 2 3の突起量は 3 5 . Ο μ ιηとし、 図 2 9 ( a ) に示されるように断面三角形状の突起 2 3は光反射シ ート 1 8の側に設けられ、 導光体 1 1からの出射光線がほとんど光反射シート 1 8の側に向かう構成とされている。 断面三角形状の突起を光取り出し機構 2 1と した効果によって、 導光体 1 1から出射する光束の 7 7 %が光反射シート 1 8の 側に出射する、 本発明に用いるのに好適な導光体が得られた。 光反射シートとしては、 形状が図 4 ( a ) 、 ( b ) に示される形状で且つ尾根 線 1 9 bが平行に配列した直線状で且つ平坦な傾斜反射面 1 9 aを基本ュニット 1 9とする光反射シート 1 8が用いられた。 ピッチは 2 2 0 ^ mとされ、 反射層 には銀のスパッタリング層を用い、 この銀スパッタリング層表面にはァクリル樹 脂がコーティングされている。 傾斜した反射面 1 9 aの傾斜角度ひは 2 4度とさ れ、 断面三角形状の突起からなる光取り出し機構 2 1により得られる導光体 1 1 から光反射シート 1 8の側に出射する光線が、 光反射シート 1 8によって方向変 換し、 導光体 1 1の法線 1 7方向に光線が出射する光学系を得た。 光源 1 3には管径 2. 2mmなる冷陰極管を用い、 インバーターを介して高周 波点灯し、 導光体 1 1の光出射面 1 5直上にはヘーズ 47. 2%なるアクリルビ ーズをコーティングして得られた光拡散シートを配設し、 面光源装置を得た。 管 電流 6mAとし、 輝度測定装置 (トプコム製、 BM— 7) を用いて面内 25点の 平均輝度を測定した結果、 平均輝度 1 5 80 n i tが得られ、 輝度性能及び輝度 ムラとも、 液晶ディスプレイパネルのバックライ ト光源として実用に十分な光学 特性であることが確認された。 また、 通常配設されるプリズムシートを用いていないため、 シート間にゴミの 混入等も少なく、 組立て性も良好であった。 また、 光反射シート 1 8の効果によ つて、 従来型の面光源装置で発生していた光源近傍に現れる輝線も除去され、 画 像品質に優れたものであった。
(実施例 2)
導光体 1 1として 200. 0 X 1 90. 0 mm、 厚みが光源 1 3付近では 2 m m、 光源 1 3から最も離れた位置では 0. 6 mmなる短辺方向に厚みの変化する 楔型形状のアクリル板を使用し、 厚肉部に冷陰極管からなる線状光源 1 3を配設 して、 線状光源 1 3から離れるにしたがって配置密度が相対的に大きくなるよう にパターニングした、 開口部形状が正方形の凸状突起 2 2を導光体 1 1上に形成 した。 凸状突起 2 2の深さ hは 30. Ο πιとし、 凸状突起 22の開口幅 Wm i nは 3 5. Ο μιηとされている。 ここで、 凸状突起 22の形成に用いる金型は、 厚さ 30 μ mなるドライフィノレ ムレジストをガラス扳上にラミネートし、 フォトリソグラフィ一によつてパター ンを形成し、 該ドライフィルムレジストによるパターニングを施したガラス板上 に電極を蒸着し、 これをマスターとしてニッケル電銬によって得ている。 導光体 1 1の光取り出し機構 2 1である凸状突起 2 2は光反射シート 1 8が配 設される側に設けられ、 前述した形状の凸状突起 2 2を光取り出し機構 2 1とし た効果によって、 導光体 1 1から出射する光束の 8 2 %が光反射シート 1 8の側 に出射する、 本発明に用いるのに好適な導光体が得られた。 光反射シート 1 8には、 図 4 ( a ) 、 ( b ) に示される形状で且つ尾根線 1 9 bが平行に配列した平行直線状で且つ平坦な傾斜反射面 1 9 aを基本ュニット 1 9とする光反射シート 1 8が用いられた。 基本ュ-ット 1 9のピッチは 1 0 0 mとされ、 平行直線状で且つ平坦な傾斜反射面が形成されるベースシートにはポ リエステルを用い、 金型によって傾斜反射面加工を施した後にサンドプラストに より表面を粗面化し、 更に銀蒸着加工を施して反射層を形成した。 傾斜した反射 面の傾斜角度 αは 2 5度とされ、 凸状突起 2 2からなる光取り出し機構 2 1によ り得られる導光体 1 1から光反射シート 1 8側に出射する光線 2 8を、 光反射シ ート 1 8によって方向変換し、 導光体 1 1の法線 1 7方向に光線 2 8が出射する 光学系を得た。 光源 1 3には管径 2 . O mmなる冷陰極管を用い、 インバーターを介して高周 波点灯し、 導光体 1 1の光出射面 1 5直上にはヘーズ 4 5 %なるアク リルビーズ をコーティングして得られた光拡散シートを配設し、 面光源装置を得た。 管電流 6 m Aとし、 輝度測定装置 (トプコム製、 B M— 7 ) を用いて面内 2 5点の平均 輝度を結果、 平均輝度 1 4 5 0 n i tが得られ、 輝度性能及び輝度ムラとも、 液 晶ディスプレイパネルのバックライ ト光源として実用に十分な光学特性であるこ とが確認された。 また、 通常であれば 2枚も配設されるプリズムシートを用いていないため、 シ ート間にゴミの混入等も少なく、 組立て性も極めて良好であり、 更には余分なシ ートがないため、 薄型且つ軽量の面光源装置が得られた。 更には、 光反射シート 1 8の効果によって、 従来型の面光源装置では発生し、 特別な対策が必要であつ た光源近傍に現れる輝線も除去され、 画像品質に極めて優れたものであった。 加 えて、 光反射シート表面はサンドブラス トによって粗面化されているため、 特定 の方向に対する出射光線のぎらっきもなくなり、 照明光線の品質も液晶デイスプ レイパネルのバックライ ト光源として極めて優れたものであった。
(実施例 3 )
導光体 1 1として 4 5 . 0 X 3 7 . 0 mm、 厚みが 1 mmなるアク リル板を使 用し、 コーナー部に白色 L E Dかなる線状光源 1 3を配設し、 光源 1 3が配設さ れるコーナー部から離れるにしたがってピッチ Pが徐々に狭くなるように配置さ れた、 図 2 5に示されるような断面山形状の突起 2 7からなる光取り出し機構 2 1を導光体 1 1の光出射面 1 5側に設けた。 断面山形状突起 2 7の頂角 0は 1 5 0度、 この突起 2 7の底辺の幅は 7 0 ^ mとされている。 前述のような断面山形状の突起 2 7からなる光取り出し機構 2 1が形成された 導光体 1 1の形成は、 対応する形状加工が施された金型による射出成型加工によ り、 金型表面形状の加工にはダイアモンドバイトによる切削加工が用いられた。 断面山形状の突起 2 7を導光体 1 1の光出射面 1 5側に設けて光取り出し機構 2 1とした効果によって、 導光体 1 1から出射する光束の 7 2 %が光反射シート 1 8の側に出射する、 本発明に用いるのに好適な導光体が得られた。 光反射シート 1 8には、 図 9に示される形状で且つ凹面鏡状の傾斜面 1 .9 aを 基本ュニット 1 9とする光反射シートが用いられた。 凹面鏡部の最大径は 7 0 μ mとされ、 反射層には銀のスパッタリング層を用い、 この銀スパッタリング層表 面にはビーズ入りのァクリル樹脂がコーティングされている。 傾斜した反射面 1 9 aの傾斜角度 αは 1 8度とされ、 導光体 1 1の光出射面 1 5側に設けた断面山 形状の突起からなる光取り出し機構 2 1によって得られる光反射シート 1 8側に 出射する光 ^を、 光反射シート 1 8によって方向変換し、 導光体 1 1の法線 1 7 方向に出力光が出射する光学系を得た。 光源 1 3には外形 2. 0 X 3. 0 X 1. ' 6 mmなるチップタイプの白色 L ED を用い、 順方向電圧 3. 3 Vにて点灯し、 白色 LEDを光源とする面光源装置を 得た。 輝度測定装置 (トプコム製、 BM— 7) を用いて面内 5点の平均輝度を測 定した結果、 平均輝度 2 20 n i tが得られ、 輝度性能及び輝度ムラとも、 携帯 電話用液晶ディスプレイパネルのバックライ ト光源として実用に十分な光学特性 であることが確認された。 また、 通常使用されるプリズムシートを用いていないため、 組立て性も極めて 良好であり、 更には余分なシートがないため、 薄型且つ軽量の面光源装置が得ら れた。 また、 光反射シート表面にコーティングされたアクリルビーズの効果によ つて、 照明光のぎらつきも改良されたため、 導光体 1 1直上に液晶パネルを直接 設置しても実用に耐え得る、 極めて構造簡素な面光源装置を得ることができた。
(実施例 4)
尾根線が平行に配列した平行直線状傾斜反射面 1 9 aを基本ュニット 1 9とし、 この基本ュニット 1 9の断面形状を凹状とした光反射シート 1 8を用いることの 他は実施例 1と同様にして面光源装置を得た。 断面凹状なる傾斜反射面の効果に よって、 光反射シート側に出光した光束は導光体 1 1の法線 1 7方向に変角され ると同時に集光され、 これによつて平均輝度は実施例 1に比較して 1 76 9 n i tに高まった。 面光源装置としての実用性は実施例 1と同様に極めて高いもので あ
(実施例 5)
導光体 1 1として 2 1 0. 0 X 1 90. Omm、 厚みが光源付近では 2 mm、 光源から最も離れた位置では 0. 6 mmなる短辺方向に厚みの変化する楔型形状 のアクリル板を使用し、 厚肉部に冷陰極管からなる線状光源を配するとして、 線 状光源から離れるにしたがって長さが一軸方向に相対的に大きくなるようにパタ 一二ングした開口部形状が楕円形の凸状突起 20 aを導光体 1 1上に形成した。 図 30に凸状突起 22の拡大図を示す。 凸状突起 2 2の深さ hは 5 0 . Ο μ πιとし、 線状光源に垂直な方向に対する断 面で見た際の凸状突起 2 2の最小開口幅 Wm i nは 5 5 . O ^ mとされている。 ここで、 凸状突起 2 2の形成に用いる金型は、 厚さ 5 0 i mなる ドライフ,イルム レジストをガラス板上にラミネートし、 フォトリソグラフィ一によつてパターン を形成し、 該ドライフィルムレジストによるパターニングを施したガラス板上に 電極を蒸着し、 これをマスターとしてニッケル電铸によって得ている。 導光体 1 1の凸状突起 2 2からなる光取り出し機構 2 1が設けられない側には、 導光体 1 1の光集光性をさらに高めるべく、 図 3 7に示されるように頂角 9 0度、 ピッチ 5 0 IX mなるプリズムアレー 3 4が形成され、 該プリズムァレー 3 4の尾 根線は線状光源 1 3が配設される側端部 1 2に垂直になるように配置されている。 導光体 1 1の光取り出し機構 2 1である凸状突起 2 2は光反射シート 1 8が配 設される側に設けられ、 前述した形状の凸状突起 2 2を光取り出し機構 2 1とし た効果によって、 導光体 1 1から出射する光束の 7 4 %が光反射シート 1 7の側 に出射する本発明に用いるのに好適な導光体が得られた。 光反射シートには、 図 6に示される形状で且つ尾根線が平行に配列した平行直 線状傾斜反射面 1 9 aを基本ュ-ット 1 9とする、 光反射シート 1 8が用いられ た。 ピッチは.1 0 0 mとされ、 反射層 (面) には銀のスパッタリング層を用い、 この銀スパッタリング層表面にはァクリル樹脂がコーティングされている。 傾斜 した反射面 1 9 aの傾斜角度 αは 2 7度とされ、 凸状突起 2 2からなる光取り出 し機構 2 1により得られる導光体 1 1から光反射シート 1 8の側に出射する光線 を、 光反射シート 1 8によって方向変換し、 導光体 1 1の法線方向に光線が出射 する光学系を得た。 光源 1 3には管径 2 . (実施例 6 )
導光体 1 1として 4 5 . 0 X 3 7 . 0 mm、 厚みが 1 mmなるアクリル板を使 用し、 コーナー部に白色 L E Dからなる線状光源 1 3を配設し、 光源 1 3が配設 されるコーナー部から離れるにしたがって長さが一軸方向に相対的に大きくなる ようにパターニングした、 開口部形状が菱形の凸状突起 2 0 aを導光体 1 1上に 形成した。 図 3 1 ( b ) に凸状突起 2 2の拡大図を示す。 凸状突起 2 2の深さ hは 2 7 . 0 Ai mとし、 線状光源 1 3に垂直な方向に対す る断面で見た際の凸状突起 2 2の最小開口幅 Wm i nは 3 1 . 0 μ mとされてい る。 ここで、 凸状突起 2 2の形成に用いる金型は、 実施例 1、 2と同様に、 ドラ ィフィルムレジストによるパターユングを施したガラス板上に電極を蒸着し、 こ れをマスターとしてニッケル電铸によって得た。 導光体 1 1の凸状突起 2 2からなる光取り出し機構 2 1が設けられない側には、 導光体 1 1の集光性をさらに高めるべく、 頂角 9 0度、 ピッチ 5 0 mなるプリ ズムアレー 3 4が形成され、 該プリズムアレーの尾根線は白色 L E D光源が配さ れる側端部に垂直になるように配置されている。 導光体 1 1の光取り出し機構 2 1である凸状突起 2 2は光反射シート 1 8が配 設される側に設けられ、 前述した形状の凸状突起 2 2を光取り出し機構 2 1とし た効果によって、 導光体 1 1から出射する光束の 7 2 %が光反射シート 1 8の側 に出射する、 本発明に用いるのに好適な導光体が得られた。 . 光反射シート 1 8としては、 図 9に示される形状で且つ凹面鏡状の反射面 1 9 aを基本ュニット 1 9とする、 光反射シート 1 8が用いられた。 凹面鏡部の最大 径は 7 0 mとされ、 反射層 (面) には銀のスパッタリング層を用い、 この銀ス パッタリング層表面にはビーズ入りのァクリル樹脂がコーティングされている。 傾斜した反射面 1 9 aの傾斜角度ひは 2 4度とされ、 凸状突起 2 2からなる光取 り出し機構 2 1により得られる導光体 1 1から光反射シート 1 8の側に出射する 光線を、 光反射シート 1 8によって方向変換し、 導光体 1 1の法線方向に光線が 出射する光学系を得た。 光源には外形 2 . 0 X 3 . 0 X 1 . 6 mmなるチップタイプの白色 L E Dを用 レ、、 直流電圧 3 . 3 Vにて点灯し、 白色 L E Dを光源とする面光源装置を得た。 輝度測定装置 (トプコム製、 B M— 7 ) を用いて面内 5点の平均輝度を測定した 結果、 平均輝度 4 3 0 n i tが得られ、'輝度性能およひ ;輝度ムラとも、 携帯型液 晶ディスプレイパネルのバックライト光源として実用するに十分な光学特性であ ることが確認された。 また、 通常使用されるプリズムシートを用いていないため、 組立性も極めて良 好であり、 さらには余分なシートがないため、 薄型且つ軽量の面光源装置が得ら れた。 また、 光反射シート 1 8の表面にコーティングされたアクリルビーズの効 果によって、 照明光のぎらつきも改良されたため、 導光体 1 1直上に液晶パネル を配しても実用に耐え得る、 極めて構造簡素な面光源装置を得ることができた。
(実施例 7 ) 実施例 5に記載の面光源装置において、 パターニングを変更し、 同一形状の凸 状突起 2 2が線状光源 1 3から離れるにしたがって分布密度が大きくなる図 2 0 に示されるパターニング形状とした。 凸状突起 2 2の深さ hは 5 0 μ πι、 最小開 口幅 Wm i nは 5 5 w in 最大開口幅 Wm a xも 5 5 mとなる開口部形状が正 方形の凸状突起を用いている。 前述したパターン形状を用いたことによって、 図 3 2 ( c ) に示されるように 光反射シート 1 8の側に選択的に光を出射する能力が高まり、 導光体 1 1から出 射する光束の 8 8 %が光反射シート 1 8の側に出射する本発明に用いるのに極め て好適な導光体が得られた。 面内 2 5点の平均輝度は 2 1 5 0 n 1 tが得られ、 面光源装置としての実用性は実施例 2と同様に極めて高いものであった。 産業上の利用可能性
本発明の面光源装置は、 例えばパーソナルコンピュータ向けモニタ一や薄型 T V等の液晶ディスプレイ装置においてバックライ ト光学系として好適に用いるこ とができる。

Claims

請 求 の 範 囲
1 . 透明な合成樹脂からなる板 (シート) 状に形成され、 一表面を光出射面と する導光体と、 この導光体の少なくとも一側端部近傍に配設された光源とから構 成され、 この光源を点灯した際に前記導光体の前記光出射面から出射する出射光 力 前記光源の配置されている前記導光体の前記側端部表面に直角な方向に対す る出射角度分布のピークが前記光出射面の法線 (垂直線) から ± 1 5度以内にあ り、 出射角度分布の半値幅が ± 3 0度以内にあることを特徴とする面光源装置。
2 . 前記導光体の前記光出射面と反対側の面側に光反射シートが配置され、 前 記光源から前記導光体に入射した光線を前記光出射面と反対側の面から出射させ て前記光反射シートで反射させ、 この反射光を前記導光体に再入射させて前記導 光体の前記光出射面から出射させ、 その時の出射光が前記導光体の前記側端部表 面に直角な方向に対する出射角度分布のピークが前記光出射面の法線 (垂直線) から土 1 5度以内にあり、 出射角度分布の半値幅が ± 3 0度以内にあることを特 徴とする請求項 1に記載の面光源装置。
3 . 前記導光体の前記光出射面と反対側の面に光取り出し機構が設けられ、 こ の光取り出し機構により前記光源から前記導光体に入射した光線の大部分を前記 光出射面と反対側の面から出射させて前記光反射シートで反射させるようにした ことを特徴とする請求項 2に記載の面光源装置。
4 . 一表面を光出射面とする導光体と、 この導光体に設けられた光取り出し機 構と、 前記導光体の側端部に配設された光源と、 前記導光体の前記光出射面と対 向する面側に配置された光反射シートとを含み、
前記光取り出し機構は前記導光体より出射する光線の少なくとも 6 5 %以上を 光反射シートの側に出射する機構とされ、
前記光反射シートは、 傾斜した反射面からなるほぼ同一及び/又はほぼ相似形 の基本ュニットがピッチ 5 0 0 0 μ m以下にて多数配列して形成されていること を特徴とする面光源装置。
5 . 前記導光体の少なく とも一方の表面には、 波板状の凹凸がピッチ 5 0 0 μ m以下で設けられ、 且つ前記波板状の凹凸の尾根線は前記光源の配設された前 記導光体側端部にほぼ垂直な方向とされてい δことを特徴とする請求項 4に記载 の面光源装置。
6 . 前記光取り出し機構は、 前記導光体の前記光出射面と対向する面側に設け られた多数の凸状突起を配置してなるパターンで形成されていることを特徵とす る請求項 3〜 5のいずれかに記載の面光源装置。
7 . 前記凸状突起の深さ hと最小開口幅 Wm i nとで定義される値 h /Wm i nが 0 . 5以上とされていることを特徴とする請求項 6に記載の面光源装置。
8 . 前記反射面上には透明絶縁性物質によるコート層が設けられていることを 特徴とする請求項 3〜 7のいずれかに記載の面光源装置。
9 . 前記金属物質が銀若しくはアルミニウムであり、 前記透明絶縁性物質によ るコート層が抵抗率 1 . O X 1 6 6 Ω · c m以上の透明物質からなることを特徴と する請求項 8に記載の面光源装置。
1 0 . 前記光反射面上に設けられた光透過性物質からなる前記コート層の表面 は、 平滑面とされていることを特徴とする請求項 8又は 9に記載の面光源装置。
1 1 . 前記コート層の平滑な表面には印刷パターンが設けられていることを特 徵とする請求項 8〜 1 0のいずれかに記載の面光源装置。
