Abstract

An item of kiln furniture is formed of a composition including a lightweight refractory filler. The use of the lightweight filler reduces the density but without comprising the other properties of the kiln furniture.

Description

KILN FURNITURE
The invention relates to kiln furniture. More particularly the invention relates to kiln furniture for use in supporting articles, including, but not limited to tableware and the like, to be fired in a kiln.
According to the invention in one aspect there is provided an item of kiln furniture, formed of a composition comprising a refractory component and a binder, characterised by the presence of a lightweight filler which is refractory enough to withstand firing and whereby the density of the item ranges from about 1.0 to about 1.40.
According to the invention in another aspect there is provided a method of firing a ceramic article in a kiln, the method comprising mounting the article on a support item of kiln furniture formed from a composition as just defined and then firing the article in a kiln.
Preferably the lightweight filler is provided by hollow refractory spheres such as fly ash floaters, silica fume and the like. It is preferred to use hollow microspheres of high compressive strength and which have a specific gravity 0.6 to 0.8g/cc and a melting point of 1600 to 1800°C.
Preferably the lightweight filler is a fused aluminosilicate comprising the following inseparable phases: aiuminosilk ;ate (amorphous) 65 - 80 mullite 25 - 35 quartz 0 - 1 calcite 0 - 1
The composition preferably comprises a particulate refractory component, and a binder. The refractory component may be a refractory oxide, carbide, nitrite, boride, silicate, examples being alumina, silicon carbide, cordierite, magnesia, mullite, zirconia; or the like. The binder may be ball clay or the like. If the furniture is to be formed of cordierite as is preferred, a reactive filler may be present, e.g. a source of magnesium such as magnesium carbonate.
The use of the lightweight filler reduces the density but without compromising the other properties of the kiln furniture. The following table shows the ratio of rate of addition and the effect on bulk density:-
TABLE I
Figure imgf000003_0001
The invention is illustrated by the following examples:
EXAMPLE 1
The following were mixed together:
grog 40 ball clay 33 magnesium carbonate 12 lightweight filler 15
100
Water is added to form a granulate which was pressed in metal dies to form an item of kiln furniture. The green article was removed and fired to form an item of kiln furniture. The item was essentially cordierite. The density was 1.40. The shaped item was used to support an article when that was fired.
EXAMPLE II
The method of Example I was repeated but 55 parts of lightweight filler were used to provide an item which had a density of 1.02.

Claims

1. An item of kiln furniture, formed of a composition including a lightweight filler which is refractory and which adjusts the density to between about 1.0 and 1.40.
2. An item according to Claim 1 , containing from about 15% to about 55% by weight of the lightweight filler.
3. An item according to any preceding Claim, wherein the lightweight filler is a fused aluminosilicate.
4. An item according to Claim 3, comprising amorphous aluminosilicate and mullite.
5. A method of firing a ceramic kiln, the method comprising mounting the article on a support item of kiln furniture formed from a composition including a lightweight filler which is refractory and which adjusts the density to between about 1 and about 1.40.
6. A method of making an item of kiln furniture having a density of from about 1.0 to about 1.40, the method comprising mixing refractory component, a binder and a lightweight filler, adding water to form a granulate, pressing, drying and firing the shape.
