- the computerized network 512 receives the query from the processor 550 and generates a search of the database for the record associated with the unique identification code.
- the computerized network 512 also may be configured to transmit the report to the owner 508 of the manufactured article 510.
- the retrieval unit 514 may also communicate information related to the retrieval unit 514. Such information may include a time and date the query is made, a time and date that the RFID tag 506 was read by the RFID reader 514, and a location for the retrieval unit 514.
- the computerized network 512 may read the identification information associated with the record, and determine the identification of the owner 508.
- the computerized network 512 may generate the report 560 based on the information related to the retrieval unit 504 that generated the query.
- An RFID reader as described above may be disposed with various properties of the retrieval unit 604.
- the RFID reader is located so that it may interrogate RFID tags on a manufactured article 610 that is open to the public such as along the side of a road or in a car parked along the road.
- the RFID reader may be disposed on a traffic control signal 672, or a toll booth 676.
- the RFID tag may be interrogated and the unique identification code read.
- the unique identification code may be recorded by a processor coupled to the RFID reader. The processor may generate a request for a query based on the unique identification code.
- the RFID reader also may be disposed on a mobile vehicle such as a patrol car 674, or a patrol bicycle, for the retrieval unit 604. As the patrol car 674 is operated, the RFID reader disposed therein interrogates the RFID tags within range of the RFID reader.
- the RFID reader may be coupled to a processor having a memory configured to store unique identification codes and associated personal identification information.
- the memory may be configured to store unique identification codes downloaded from the computerized network as described above.
- the processor may search the memory for a match for unique identification code read by the RFID reader as previously described.
- the memory also may be configured to store unique identification code read by the RFID reader.
- the processor may generate a request for a query based on unique identification codes.
- the processor may communicate the query to the computerized network 612 via a wireless connection.
- the processor also may download the unique identification codes read by the RFID reader to a central processor on a periodic basis such as at the end of a shift for a patrolperson.
- the central processor may be located at a central office or building 670 for the retrieval unit 604.
- the central processor also may be coupled to other RFID readers or other processors that are coupled to RFID readers.
- the central processor may generate a request for a query based on the identification codes downloaded from the RFID reader of various patrol cars 674 in a fleet for the retrieval unit 604.
- An owner 608 of the manufactured article 610 may obtain an RFID tag, and register the RFID tag as described with reference to Figure 1 above. If the manufactured article 610 having the RFID tag affixed thereto is mislaid or misappropriated, the owner 608 may report to the RFID tag issuing authority 602 that the item has been lost. In an event where the RFID tag issuing authority 602 is an insurer for the manufactured article 610, such a report may be part of a claim made by the owner 608 against an insurance policy for the manufactured article 610. As a result of the report from the owner 610, the record in the database associated with the RFID tag affixed to the manufactured article 610 is flagged to indicate that the RFID tag has left the possession of the owner 610.
- the flagged record may be queued for downloading to a RFID reader.
- the owner 608 also may communicate with the computerized network 612, as described above, to flag the record in the database associated with the RFID tag on the mislaid or misappropriated manufactured article 610 as having left the possession of the owner.
- Whether a unique identification code is associated with a mislaid or misappropriated manufactured article may be determined based on a location of the RFID reader.
- a unique identification code read by an RFID reader disposed at the impound 558 may be determined to be associated with a mislaid or misappropriated manufactured article 610.
- An RFID reader that is located in the community may interrogate an RFID tag and read a unique identification code associated with a manufactured article 610 that is in the owner's possession, as well as a manufactured 610 article that has been mislaid or misappropriated.
- a request for a query based on a unique identification code read by an RFID reader located in the community therefore, may include a unique identification code associated with a manufactured article that is not mislaid or misappropriated.
- a query of only those records that have been flagged as associated with a mislaid or a misappropriated manufactured article 610 may be performed based on the location of the RFID reader that read the unique identification code.
- a query based on a unique identification code read by a RFID reader in the community may be confined only to those records that have been flagged, in order to locate a record in the database that is associated with an RFID tag that has been reported as mislaid or misappropriated.
- a query based on a unique identification code read by an RFID reader at an impound also may be confined to flagged records, and also, may relate to records that have not been flagged.
- the computerized network 612 may therefore generate a report that includes information related to items that may be verified as mislaid or misappropriated.
- Figure 7 illustrates a retrieval unit 704 for a manufactured article recovery system 100 having an RFID reader 714 disposed at a private business.
- the retrieval unit 704 may be a pawnshop, a flea market, or other private entity where manufactured articles may be resold or hocked.
- An RFID reader 714 may be located so that it may interrogate an RFID tag 706 on a manufactured article 710 brought to the retrieval unit 704 for resale.
- the RFID reader 714 may be located at a point of ingress or egress to the retrieval unit 704, or may be located at a counter 780 where a resale transaction may occur.
- the RFID reader 714 may be coupled with a processor 750.
- the processor 750 may be configured to receive a unique identification that is. read by the RFID reader 714.
- the processor 750 search a memory of downloaded unique identification codes to locate a match for an identification code identified as being associated with a mislaid or misappropriated item, as described above.
- the processor 750 also may generate a query of the computerized network (not shown) as described above, based on the unique identification code read by the RFID reader 714. Based on the query, the computerized network may search the database to determine whether the unique identification code is associated with a manufactured article that has been recorded as mislaid or misappropriated.
- a report may be generated by the computerized network and communicated with the processor 750.
- the processor may display the report to an attendant at the retrieval unit 704. Based on the report displayed by the processor, the attendant may determine whether the manufactured article 710 bearing the RFID tag is mislaid or misappropriated. The attendant also may estimate whether the manufactured article 710 is in the possession of the rightful owner.
- the database also may be searched based on whether the record 892 has been flagged as related to a mislaid or misappropriated.
- the computerized network 812 may be configured to search only those records 892 having an entry indicating that the item is mislaid or misappropriated in the status field 898.
- the computerized network 812 also maybe configured to search all records 892 based on a unique identification code, and determine whether a located record 892 has been identified as related to a mislaid or misappropriated manufactured article based on the entry in the status field 898.
- the report generated by the computerized network 812 may include all results of the query, or may include only records 892 having an entry in the status field indicating that the record is associated with a mislaid or misappropriated manufactured article.
- the report may also include information that a record has not been located.
- the database may also be downloaded to a memory or cache associated with an RFID reader.
- the database 890 may be downloaded in whole or in part.
- records 892 in the database 890 that have been flagged as being related to a lost or stolen item may be downloaded to a cache.
- the downloaded records 892 may include the unique identification field 890, the owner identification field 894, the item description field 896, any combination thereof, or the like.
- the records 892 that are downloaded may include only records that have been updated or altered since a previous download to the memory, or may include all records regardless of a previous download to the memory.
- the download also may include updating records 892 stored in the memory to include any change in the status of a previously downloaded record 892.
- the database also may store information related to a retrieval unit and RFID readers.
- the database may store a record 882 for an RFID reader in the manufactured article recovery system.
- the record may include a field 884 for the retrieval unit to which the RFID reader is associated, a field 886 for information related to a location for the retrieval unit, and a field 888 for a unique identification number for the RFID reader.
- the records for the RFID reader 882 maybe searched to determine information associated with the retrieval unit transmitting the request. Based on the information stored in the record 882, the computerized network may search all or a portion of the records 892 for the unique identification numbers.
- the computerized network 812 may receive a request for a query from a mobile RFID reader that read a unique identification number.
- the computerized network may also receive with the request a serial number of the RFID reader.
- the computerized network may search the database 900 for the record 882 associated with the serial number of the RFID reader and determine that the request for the query is being made by a mobile RFID reader.
- the computerized network 812 may thereby, conduct a query of only those records 892 having an entry in the field 898 as being associated with a manufactured article that has been identified as lost or stolen.
- One example may relate to locating an RFID tag on an article of clothing, such as an expensive fur.
- An RFID reader may be located a dry cleaning establishment, a Laundromat, or at a storage location for. such clothing.
- the RFID reader may be located at the counter or at a doorway may be used to interrogate each RFID tag disposed brought to the drycleaner.
- a processor may read the unique identification code, and query a database or a memory of downloaded unique identification codes for a matching code. If the owner's identification information has been entered into the database, the processor may determine the owner's information.
- the database may be configured to store the owner's preferences, and the type of article of clothing for each RFID tag. Based on a query of the database, the processor may generate a shop order to have the articles of clothing cleaned, and an invoice or receipt for the customer.
- the RFID tags may be used to track the clothing through a cleaning process, and in an inventory for the drycleaner and recover the item should it be mislaid during the dry-cleaning process.
- Some of the changes that can be implemented include disposing an RFID reader at a border or customs checkpoint. An RFID tag on a manufactured article will be detected at the checkpoint, the database or memory queried, and a report provided to the agent or attendant regarding whether a manufactured article at the checkpoint has been reported as mislaid or misappropriated.
- Another change may be to locate an RFID reader at an auction house for antiquities and artwork.
- An RFID tag may be concealed on antiquities or other pieces of art so that if they are later located at the auction house, the auctioneer may determine whether the item has been identified as mislaid or misappropriated.
- the artwork may be interrogated by other RFID readers to verify authenticity of the artwork. While various embodiments of the invention have been describe, it will be apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art that many more embodiments and implementations are possible within the scope of the invention. Accordingly, the invention is not to be restricted except in light of the attached claims and their equivalents.
