Abstract

A device, system and method for securing a plate to a bone. An anchor device has a screw ( 34,104 ) (with a head portion (64,116) ) and a locking disc (80). The head portion includes a slotted wall defining a plurality of petals (76,118) disposed around a central opening (78). The screw further includes an internal bore (120). The locking disc (80) is rotatably disposed within the central opening (78), such that in a first rotational position the petals (76,118) may flex inwardly, and in a second rotational position the petals (76,118) are substantially prevented from flexing inwardly. A tool (130) for manipulating the anchor device (34, 104) has a shaft (134) with its end (138) configured to mate with the internal bore (120) of the screw to permit selective rotation of the screw, and a sleeve member (140) rotatably and slideably mounted on the shaft having an end (114) that mates with the locking disc (80) to permit selective rotation of the disc.

1. An anchor device for securing to a bone a plaft 32 having apertures 60, 62 with concave edges 70, the anchor device comprising: a screw 34 including a head portion 64 and a threaded shank 66 with a distal tip 68 and a central longitudinal axis, the head portion 64 having a o :ntr&l opening 78 exposed at the proximal end of the screw 34 and an annular wall with inner and outer surfaces and having a plurality of slots that define a plurality of spaced pet; Js 76 disposed around the central opening 78, the screw 34 further including an internal surface of defined shape originating in the central opening 78 for engagement to effectuate driving the screw 34 into the bone; and a locking disc 80 rotatably disposed within the central opening 78; wherein the inner surface of the annular wall of the sciew 34 includes a plurality of spaced recesses 90, and the locking disc 80 comprises a periphery of non-circular configuration defining a plurality of spaced protrusions 84, 86 that can be selectively aligned with recesses 90 in the inner surface of the annular wall of the head portion 64; whereupon, when the locking disc 80 is in a first rotati anal position within the central opening 78, the inner surface of the annular wall is spaced from the protrusions 84, 86 so that at least one of the petals 76 may flex inwardly, and when the 1 _>cking disc 80 is rotated to a second rotational position within the central opening 78, the ir ner surface of the annular wall is contacted by the protrusions 84, 86 so that the petals 76 are substantially prevented by the protrusions 84, 86 from flexing inwardly and the head portion 64 is captured by the concave edges 70 of a plate aperture 60, 62,
2. The anchor device of claim 1, wherein the screiv's internal surface comprises a bore 120 extending distally from the central opening 78 along the central longitudinal axis of the shank 66.
3. A system for securing to a bone a plate 32 havikg apertures 60, 62 with concave edges 70, comprising: the anchor device of claim 2; wherein the locking disc 80 comprises a central apertuje 122 that surrounds a portion of the internal surface of the screw 34 so as to permit access tc the internal surface, and at least a pair of proximally opening notches 148 configured for engagement to effectuate rotation of the locking disc 80 from the first rotational positioη to the second rotational position; and a tool 130 with a handle 132, a shaft 136 extending frojn the handle 132 and having a distal end configured to mate with the internal bore 120 of the screw 34 to permit selective rotation of the screw 34, and a sleeve member 140 axially slid sable along and rotatable about 17
the shaft 136 and having a distal end with structure that matei with the pair of proximally opening notches 148 in the locking disc 80 to permit selective rotation of the locking disc 80.
4. The system or anchor device of any of claims -3, wherein the plurality of recesses 90 are uniformly-spaced and the protrusions 84, 86 a e uniformly-spaced.
5. The system or anchor device of any of claims . -3, wherein the locking disc 80 has a central aperture 122 that surrounds a portion of the bore 120, thereby permitting access to the bore 120 by the screw driving tool 130,
6. The system or anchor device of any of claims 1 -3, wherein the bore 120 has a hexagonal cross-section.
7. The system or anchor device of any of claims 2 -5, wherein the bore 120 has a cross-sectional shape selected from among the following: slotjed, , triangular, square, rectangular, pentagonal or octagonal.
8. The system or anchor device of either of any oi claims 1-7, wherein the periphery of the locking disc 80 has a generally square configuration, defining four protrusions 84, 86,
9. The system ot anchor device of any of claims ] -1, wherein the periphery of the locking disc 80 has a generally octagonal configuration, d 'fining eight protrusions 100.
10. The system or anchor device of any of claims 1 -9, wherein the number of petals 76 equals the number of protrusions 84, 86.
11. The system or anchor device of any of claims 1 -9, wherein the number of protrusions 84, 86 is twice the number of petals 76, such that upon rotation of the locking disc 80 to the second rotational position at least two protrusioi LS 84, 86 engage each petal 76.
12. The system or anchor device of any of claims 1 -9, wherein the number of recesses 90 is twice the number of protrusions 84, 86.
13. The system or anchor device of any of claims 1 -12, wherein the recesses 90 have alternating depths with every other recess deeper than its respective neighboring recesses 90, such that when the protrusions 84, 86 defined by i he locking disc 80 are disposed within the deeper recesses 90 the petals 76 may flex inwardly.

14. The anchor device of any of claims 1-2 or 4-131, wherein the locking disc 80 includes at least a pair of proximaUy opening notches 148 configured for engagement by a tool 130 to effectuate rotation of the locking disc 80 from the prst rotational position to the second rotational position.
15. The system or anchor device of any of claims lj-14, wherein the distal tip 68 of the screw 34 is self-tapping.
16. The system or anchor device of any of claims ll- 15, wherein the locking disc 80, despite its rotational position within the central opening 78 of the head portion 64, is fully nested within the central opening 78 and does not protrude beyond the proximal end of the screw 34,
17. The system of claim 6, wherein the distal end o|f the tool shaft 136 has a mating hexagonal configuration,
18. The system of claim 7, wherein the distal end ojf the tool shaft 136 has a correspondingly mated configuration.
19. The system of any of claims 3-13 or 15-18, whferein the sleeve member 140 of the tool 130 further includes a flange member 152, whereby, when the distal ends of the shaft 136 and the sleeve member 140 are engaged, .respectively, witi the screw 34 and the locking disc 80, a user may maintain the rotational position of the screw 34 by grasping the tool handle 132 and simultaneously rotate the flange member 152 :ιnd the sleeve member 140 and thus also the locking disc 80.
20. The system of any of claims 3-13 or 15-19, furώier comprising a screw 34 aligning device 160 having a guide block 162 and a manipulat ion arm 164, the guide block 162 including at least one bore 168 through which the screw 3 1 can pass and which holds the screw 34 in a desired angular position as it is being driven intc the bone.
21. A method of securing to a bone a plate 32 havii ig apertures 60, 62 with concave edges 70, comprising the steps of: positioning a selected aperture 60, 62 of the plate 32 ac jacent a desired location on the bone; aligning an anchoring device as claimed in claim 14 Ui ■ ough the selected aperture 60, 62 and into contact with the bone at a desired angular orientatian, engaging the internal bore 120 of the screw 34 with a ool 130 as claimed in claim 19, driving the distal tip 68 of the screw 34 against the bojie and selectively rotating the screw 34 until it penetrates the bone to a desired depth, manipulating the flange 152 first to slide the sleeve member 140 into mating engagement with the pair of proximally opening notches 148 a the locking disc 80 and second to rotate the locking disc 80 from a first rotational pos tion to a second rotational position.
22, The method of claim 21 , further comprising th step of simultaneously maintaining the rotational position of the screw 34 by grasping I the tool handle 132 while manipulating the flange 152 to effectuate rotation of the locki: ig disc 80.
23. The method of either of claims 21 -22, further c omprising the step of employing a screw 34 aligning device having a guide block 162 and a manipulation arm 164, the guide block 162 including at least one boie 168 through which the screw 34 can pass and which maintains the screw 34 in the desired angular orientation as it is being driven into the bone.
24. A driving tool 130 for manipulating an anchor jievice and thereby securing an apertured plate 32 to a bone, comprising: a handle 132; a shaft 136 extending from the handle1 132 and having i distal end configured to mate with an internal bore 120 in a screw 34 component of the anchor device to permit selective rotation of the screw 34 component into the bone; and a sleeve member 140 axially slideable along and rotatable about the shaft 136, including a flange 152 for effectuating movement of the sleeve member 140 relative to the shaft 136 and a distal end with structure that mates with notch ;s 148 in a locking disc 80 component of the anchor device to permit selective rotation oi the locking disc 80 component from a first rotational position to a second rotational position.
