Abstract

Disclosed are a circuit and a method for triggering a CMOS image sensor, in which the image sensor elements that are disposed in rows and columns are triggered by slide registers through which binary numerical patterns are slid. A first slide register is provided which triggers first switching means to return into a defined state. A second slide register triggers second switching means in order to switchably connect the image sensor elements arranged in a row to respective column circuits. The column circuits make it possible to read signals that correspond to the incident light out of the image sensor elements. The values are forwarded to additional circuits via the column circuits in order to process the signals. A third slide register is provided which also triggers the second switching means. Said third slide register allows the image sensor elements to be read out a second time independently of the duration of an image period or frame period. Preferably, the slide registers comprise a number of register cells that matches the number of rows of the image sensor.

Description

Schaltung zur Ansteuerung eines CMOS Bildsensors Circuit for driving a CMOS image sensor
The invention relates to a circuit for driving a CMOS image sensor. CMOS image sensors include a plurality of functional blocks, including photosensitive elements, such as photodiodes, and amplifiers associated with the photodiodes, which buffer the weak signal of the photodiodes. The amplifiers are often designed as a transistor amplifier, for example as a field effect transistor or FET in a source follower circuit. At least one photodiode and an amplifier each form elements of a pixel or pixels. The pixels further include first switches to set the elements of the pixel in a defined state, and second switches for switchably connecting the elements of the pixel to a data line via which a signal generated by integration of incident light can be supplied to an evaluation circuit. The evaluation circuit may include, for example, an analog-to-digital converter and other amplifier stages.
A high signal level at an output of the pixel in conjunction with a high gain of the further amplifier stages may result in the input range of the amplifier stages and / or the analog-to-digital converter being exceeded. Such a high signal level may be caused, for example, by exposure to a high light intensity when the exposure time for this light intensity is too long. This can occur, in particular, when the exposure time is predetermined by the duration of an image or field period, for example when scanning by means of a television camera. The use of fixed exposure times can then cause areas of the scanned image to be rendered too bright and thus unrecognizable.
This effect is also known as fixed pattern noise or FPN and is caused by irregularities in the substrate and in the manufacture of the sensor. To compensate for the effect, it is known, read immediately after the reset in the defined state, the values of the respective pixels and the thus obtained, so-called dark value of the previously determined so-called Deduct bright value. A drawback with the known method is that dark and bright values do not correlate with one another, because the dark value represents the initial state for the respectively following light value, and not for the light value from which the dark value was subtracted.
It is also known to determine the dark value immediately after the reset in the defined state and store, then expose the image sensor and then to determine the bright value. In this method dark and light values correlate. However, the known method is not applicable when the exposure time is given by the duration of an image or field period.
It is therefore desirable to provide a circuit and method which allows for substantially independent control of exposure time for a given duration of an image or field period while allowing dark and light values correlating with one another to be determined.
According to the invention, the control of the arranged in rows and columns elements of the image sensor is effected by shift registers through which binary number patterns are pushed through. The respective states in the register cells switch switching means in the elements of the image sensor. In this case, a first shift register is provided, which controls first switching means for resetting in a defined state. A second shift register controls second switching means to switchably connect the elements of the image sensor arranged in a row to respective column lines. The column lines make it possible to read signals corresponding to the incidence of light from the elements of the image sensor. Via the column lines, the values reach other circuits for processing the signals. A third shift register is provided, which also controls the second switching means. By means of the third shift register, the elements of the image sensor can be read out a second time irrespective of the duration of an image or field period. The shift registers preferably have a number of register cells corresponding to the number of rows of the image sensor. In one embodiment of the invention, a multiplexer circuit is provided which selectively connects the outputs of the second or the third shift register to the second switching means, thereby avoiding that elements of the image sensor of different rows are simultaneously connected to the same column line.
In another embodiment of the invention, the second and third shift registers have a number of register cells corresponding to twice the number of rows of the image sensor. In this embodiment, only the signal of each second register cell is used to drive the second switching means. In addition, the register cells of the second and third shift registers used are offset from each other by one register cell. The outputs of the shift registers used are linked with each other via logical OR gates. The offset and the link avoids that elements of the image sensor from different rows are simultaneously connected to the same column line. In this embodiment, the clock frequencies for the second and third shift registers are different than the clock frequency of the first shift register, preferably twice as high. This embodiment does not require the multiplexer of the embodiment described above.
The inventive method provides to put the rows of elements of the image sensor successively in a defined state. For this purpose, the first switching means are actuated by appropriate control of the first shift register. Immediately after a number of elements of the image sensor have been set to the defined state, the elements of the previously reset row are connected to respective column lines by appropriate control of the second shift register, and the signals of the individual elements are read out as dark values and stored. The light impinging on the image sensor changes the signals of the individual elements of the image sensor relative to the original state. After the pixels have been exposed to obtain an image for a desired time, the elements of the image sensor are read out again by appropriate control of the third shift register and the respective so-called bright values determined. The values corresponding to the actual incidence of light on the respective picture elements are determined by forming the respective difference between dark value and bright value. The connection of the outputs of the second or third shift register to the second switching means and the binary number patterns which are pushed therethrough, are designed so that only the second or the third shift register are used to control the second switching means. This avoids that elements of the image sensor of different rows are simultaneously connected to the same column line.
By the three essentially independent shift registers, it is now possible either to reset only one row of elements of the image sensor at a time and to ignore the changes which result after the second read, or all rows of elements of the image sensor which are not read or exposed to be kept in a defined initial state. This second possibility has the advantage that undesired effects, for example due to blooming caused by strong light radiation, that is to say influencing of neighboring elements by polarity reversal of the photodiode, can be avoided or reduced.
A targeted and desired simultaneous connection of elements of several rows with the same column lines can be achieved in the invention by appropriate design of the binary pattern, which are pushed through the shift registers.

Die verstärkten Signale können mittels der als Schalter dienendenFIG. 1 shows a schematic representation of an inventive image sensor 100 with individual light-sensitive elements 101, which are arranged in the rows and columns. The superimposed in each case in a column elements 101 are connected via a column line to an evaluation circuit 102. By a first shift register 103, a binary number pattern by appropriate timing (not shown) pushed through. The first shift register 103 has a register cell for each row of elements 101 of the image sensor 100. In the example shown in FIG. 1, the value 1 means that a corresponding switching means is activated in the elements 101 of the respective row. The value 0 means that the switching means is deactivated. The first shift register 103 serves, for example, to put the elements 101 of a row into a defined initial state by means of first switching means provided in the elements 101. The connection of the first shift register 103 with the elements 101 is indicated in the figure by the lines RST. A second shift register 104 and a third shift register 105 are connected to second switching means in the elements 101 via a multiplexer circuit 106. In the figure, the connection is indicated by the dashed lines SEL. The second switching means serve to connect the respective elements 101 to the column lines, so that a signal which is proportional to the received light quantity can be read out via the column lines. The arrows on the shift registers indicate the direction in which the binary number patterns are pushed through the shift registers. FIG. 2 shows a detail of an exemplary image sensor 100 in a schematic representation. The section shows four substantially identical elements 101 of the image sensor 100, wherein the respective superimposed elements 101 via switches T3, T6, T9, T12 can be connected to column lines COLI, COL2 switchable. At the lower end of the column lines COLI, COL2 amplifiers are indicated, via which the signals are passed to a circuit, not shown, for further processing. In each of the four elements 101 shown, a photodiode PD1, PD2, PD3, PD4 are each connected to their cathode to ground. The anode of the photodiodes PD1, PD2, PD3, PD4 is connected to the source electrode of a respective switch T1, T4, T7, T10, which serves to reset the elements of the pixel in a defined state. The switches T1, T4, T7, T10 are connected to their drain electrode with a first supply voltage VRST. The switches n, T4, T7, T10 are designed, for example, as field-effect transistors and are controlled via control signals RST1, RST2. The reset of the elements 101 of the image sensor in the defined state takes place by a corresponding control of the gate electrode of the field effect transistors, whereby they become conductive and charge the junction capacitances of the photodiodes to the potential of the first supply voltage VRST. After the elements 101 of the image sensor have been reset to the defined state, a control signal is applied to the gate electrodes of the field effect transistors, which causes the connection to the first supply voltage to be interrupted. The anodes of the photodiodes PD1, PD2, PD3, P4 are each connected to a further field effect transistor T2, T5, T8, T11, which are connected as a source follower to each of the anodes of the photodiodes PD1, PD2, PD3, PD4 pending signals strengthen. The source followers are connected in the figure to a second supply voltage VDD, but it is also possible to connect the source follower to the first supply voltage VRST. The amplified signals can be used by means of the switch
Field effect transistors T3, T6, T9, T12, which are controlled by control signals SEL1, SEL2, are connected to signal lines COLI, COL2. Via the signal lines COLI, COL2 reach the signals of the photodiodes PD1, PD2, PD3, PD4 to other circuits for further processing of the signals (not shown). The common control of each located in a row Elements 101 is illustrated by the respectively identically designated control signals RST1, RST2 and SEL1, SEL2.
While the invention has been described in the foregoing description by way of example with reference to elements of a three-transistor image sensor, it is equally applicable to other embodiments of the elements of image sensors as long as these embodiments include independent switching means for resetting to a defined state and reading the signals exhibit.
In Figure 3, the sequence of the individual steps for the serial reading according to the invention of the elements 101 of the image sensor 100 shown schematically. For better clarity, the number of rows is kept small. On the right side next to the schematically indicated rows, exemplary states of the cells of shift registers RST, RD1, RD2 are indicated, which are used to control the first and second switching means in the elements 101. The down arrow indicates the direction in which the binary number patterns are pushed through the shift registers. The black-colored field symbolizes a series of elements 101 which are being placed in the defined initial state. The overlying gray dotted field symbolizes a series of elements 101, which were reset in the previous step and are now read out. This reading determines the so-called dark value. The elements 101 represented by the four overlying white fields were reset in respective preceding steps, and their respective dark values were determined. The light which occurs on them causes a corresponding change in the signals of the elements 101 represented by the fields. The field lying only over the four white fields, which is only weakly colored by gray dots, symbolizes a series of elements 101 which are read out after exposure has taken place. The signals picked up in this step form the so-called bright value. The amount of light which impinged on the respective elements 101 during the exposure is determined by subtraction of the bright value and the dark value. The remaining fields, which are filled in the figure with a pattern of wavy lines are ignored. Due to the offset between the Both binary number patterns RD1 and RD2 indicate that only one of the elements located one above the other in a column is always connected to the column line for readout, ie at any time only one of the light value and the dark value of elements 101 of a column can be selected be read out.
In Figure 4, a substantially identical situation to that of Figure 3 is shown. By appropriate timing, the active area, that is, the area in which elements 101 are reset and read out, has been shifted down a row.
From the synopsis of Figures 3 and 4, it can be seen that a virtual slot shutter has arisen, also referred to as rolling shutter. The method described above by way of example can be synchronized in a simple way with the line-by-line image structure used, for example, in television cameras. For this purpose, it merely has to be ensured that the second read-out, that is to say the read-out of the bright value, is synchronous with the line scan. By appropriately controlling the resetting of the respective next lines to be read out in advance, the duration of the exposure can be set essentially independently of the period of the half or frames. By appropriate selection of the binary number pattern, an application of the circuit according to the invention and of the method according to the invention is also possible for the interlace method.
In FIGS. 5 and 6, substantially identical situations to those of FIGS. 3 and 4 are shown. In contrast to the situations described above, by appropriately selecting the binary number pattern for the shift register, which controls the resetting of the elements 101 to the defined initial state, those rows of elements 101 are kept in the defined initial state until the darkness value is read. In addition, those rows of elements 101 are set in the defined initial state whose bright value has already been read out.
