Abstract

This disclosure addresses providing gigabit-rate data transmission over wireless radio links, using carrier frequencies in the millimeter-wave range (> 30 GHz). More specifically, a circuit for detection of amplitude-shift keyed (ASK) or other amplitude modulations (AM) which can be easily incorporated into an integrated circuit receiver system is described, making the receiver capable of supporting both complex IQ modulation schemes and simpler, non-coherent on-off or multiple-level keying signals. Several novel radio architectures are also described which, with the addition of a frequency discriminator network, have the capability of handling frequency shift keyed (FSK) or other frequency modulations (FM), as well as AM and complex IQ modulation schemes. These radio architectures support this wide variety of modulations by efficiently sharing detector hardware components. The architecture for supporting both quadrature down-conversion and ASK/AM is described first, followed by the ASK/AM detector circuit details, then the AM-FM detector architecture, and finally the most general AM-FM/IQ demodulator system concept and the FSK/FM detector circuit details.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMSreceived by the International Bureau on 17 September 2007(17.09.07)
1. An integrated radio receiver device for receiving complex IQ modulation, ASK/ AM modulation and FSK/FM modulation signals, the radio receiver device comprising: a first stage down-conversion mixer (122); an AM detector connected to the output of the first stage down-conversion mixer providing demodulated ASK/ AM output from received ASK/ AM modulation signals; and an FM detector connected to the output of the first stage down-conversion mixer providing demodulated FSK/FM output from received FSK/FM modulation signals.
characterised in that: the device further comprises an IQ down-converter connected to the output of the first stage down-conversion mixer and providing demodulated I-channel and Q-channel outputs from received complex IQ modulated signals; the output of the AM detector can be multiplexed with either the I-channel or Q-channel output into a baseband amplifier and filter.
2. A receiver as claimed in Claim 3, wherein the output of the FM detector can be multiplexed with either the I-channel or Q-channel output into a baseband amplifier and filter.
3. A receiver as claimed in Claim 2, wherein the AM provides AM demodulation and the FM detector provides FM demodulation to simultaneously received ASK/ AM and FSK/FM signals.
4. A receiver as claimed in Claim 1 , wherein the baseband amplifier is a three-stage limiting amplifier.

A receiver as claimed in Claim 4 wherein the baseband amplifier comprises: a first pair of input transistors (Ql, Q3), connected to respective positive and negative differential inputs; a second pair of input transistors (Q2, Q4), connected to said respective positive and negative differential inputs; wherein said first pair of input transistors are resistively (R3) degenerated to provide a low-gain, linear path from said differential inputs of the amplifier to differential outputs of the amplifier; and said second pair of transistors are not resistively degenerated to provide a high-gain path from said differential inputs of the amplifier to differential outputs of the amplifier.
6. A receiver as claimed in Claim 1, further comprising: a discriminator filter (129) with 90 degree phase shift, the filter being a differential filter and being centered at the IF frequency of the receiver.
7. A receiver, comprising: a first stage down-conversion mixer (2); a detector comprising: a second mixer (24, 26); an amplifier (21, 28) in the second mixer's LO-input signal path, the amplifier in the second mixer's LO-input signal path provides a high-gain path to the mixer's LO-input;
characterised in that: the detector further comprises an amplifier (20, 27) in the second mixer's RF-input signal path, the amplifier in the second mixer's RF-input signal path provides a low-gain, linear path to the mixer's RF-input; and both said amplifiers have matched delays.
8. A receiver as claimed in Claim 7, wherein the second mixer (24, 26) is a double balanced mixer.
9. A receiver as claimed in Claim 7 or claim 8, wherein the output from the second mixer (24, 26) is combined with the output from an I-channel mixer.
10. A receiver as claimed in Claim 7 or claim 8, wherein the output from the second mixer (24, 26) is combined with the output from a Q-channel mixer.
