Abstract

A system enables access to a wireless local area network (WLAN) from a dual mode device (10). The system includes a server (44) that receives a query from the dual mode device (10) through a cellular network (40), the query identifying the dual mode device (10) and an access point (22, 24, 32, 34) of a WLAN provider (20, 30), and determines whether the dual mode device (10) has permission to access the access point (22, 24, 32, 34) of the WLAN provider (20, 30). The system further includes a database (46) that enables the server (44) to determine whether the dual mode device (10) has permission to access the access point (22, 24, 32, 34).
