Abstract

Techniques are described for enhancing a hearing assist device (102) using one or more coprocessor devices (104). The hearing assist device (102) uses a handshaking protocol to detect and pair with the one or more coprocessor devices (104). The hearing assist device (102) is capable of stand-alone signal processing in the absence of the coprocessor devices (104). In one embodiment, the hearing assist device (102) directs processing of a signal to the coprocessor device (104) when the coprocessor is detected. In another embodiment, the hearing assist device (102) detects a coprocessor device (104) and uses the coprocessor device (104) to supplement signal processing performed by the hearing assist device (102). In yet another embodiment, the hearing assist device (102) communicates with a plurality of coprocessor devices (104(a), 104(m)) and the work of processing the signal is shared amongst the devices (104(a), 104(m)) according to a respective functionality of each device (104(a), 104(m)).
