Information content is managed in a network-based communication system by providing a content management site accessible to a user of the system. The content management site is configured so as to permit the user to enter information in accordance with a specified format comprising a plurality of selectable mobile information channels each corresponding to an information category. The entered information is processed to generate for the user a mobile site comprising information content that is accessible via one or more mobile devices over a wireless network of the system. The information content of the mobile site is preferably configured so as to integrate therewith information associated with at least one messaging action, collaboration action, location-based service action, or other wireless networking functionality of the wireless network.

Claims

1. A method for managing information content in a network-based communication system, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a content management web site identified by a first uniform resource locator and accessible to a user of the communication system, the content management web site permitting the user to author content to be added to at least one of a plurality of predetermined selectable mobile information channels and to select activation of particular ones of the plurality of predetermined selectable mobile information channels, the content management web site comprising a web page listing the predetermined selectable mobile information channels with respective indications of whether or not said channels have been activated by the user; and

generating a mobile web site identified by a second uniform resource locator different than the first uniform resource locator so as to allow the mobile web site to be accessed by a plurality of users independently of the content management web site via one or more mobile devices over a wireless network of the communication system, the mobile web site comprising a web page having activatable links corresponding to respective ones of the predetermined selectable mobile information channels that have been activated by the user through the content management web site.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the content management web site further permits the user to designate at least one of an extensible markup language (XML) feed and a rich site summary (RSS) feed, and wherein the mobile web site includes said at least one feed designated by the user.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the mobile web site comprises at least one of a collaborative workspace, a data mailbox and a collaborative community.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein information content of the mobile web site is configured so as to integrate therewith information associated with at least one wireless networking functionality of the wireless network.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the information associated with at least one wireless networking functionality of the wireless network is determinable based at least in part on at least one parameter associated with one or more activated ones of the mobile information channels.

6. The method of claim 4 wherein the information associated with at least one wireless networking functionality of the wireless network comprises information specifying at least one messaging action implementable over the wireless network.

7. The method of claim 4 wherein the information associated with at least one wireless networking functionality of the wireless network comprises information specifying at least one collaboration action implementable over the wireless network.

8. The method of claim 4 wherein the information associated with at least one wireless networking functionality of the wireless network comprises information specifying at least one location-based service action implementable over the wireless network.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein access of the one or more mobile devices to information content of the mobile web site is determined based at least in part on one or more distribution rules determined based at least in part on the information entered by the user at the content management web site.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein accessibility to the mobile web site is controlled so as to permit one or more third parties to view at least a portion of the mobile web site without any such parties being registered users of a content management portion or a mobile web site portion of the system.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein information content of the mobile web site is configured such that a persistent version thereof is accessible via the one or more mobile devices over the wireless network.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the content management web site is provided by an entity operating the wireless network and the user comprises a subscriber of the entity.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the content management web site is identified thereon as being associated with the entity operating the wireless network and is accessible only to subscribers of the wireless network.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the mobile web site is shared by a group comprising multiple members having a common interest.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein one or more of the members can manage via the content management web site content accessible at the mobile web site, and can generate via the mobile web site messages to one or more of the other members, thereby facilitating interaction between the members over the wireless network.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein the mobile web site is associated with a particular event and further including the step of transmitting the second uniform resource locator identifying the mobile web site to one or more users determined to be likely to have an interest in the subject matter of the event.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the one or more users are determined by comparing generalized demographic data associated with the event with demographic data previously stored for users of the system.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein access to the content management web site for generation of the mobile web site is provided to the user contingent upon purchase of a good or a service associated with the wireless network.

19. An apparatus for use in managing information content in a network-based communication system, the apparatus comprising:

a processing element comprising a processor coupled to a memory;

the processing element providing at least a portion of a content management web site identified by a first uniform resource locator and accessible to a user of the communication system, the content management web site permitting the user to author content to be added to at least one of a plurality of predetermined selectable mobile information channels and to select activation of particular ones of the plurality of predetermined selectable mobile information channels, the content management web site comprising a web page listing the predetermined selectable mobile information channels with respective indications of whether or not said channels have been activated by the user; and

the processing element generating a mobile web site identified by a second uniform resource locator different than the first uniform resource locator so as to allow the mobile web site to be accessed by a plurality of users independently of the content management web site via one or more mobile devices over a wireless network of the communication system, the mobile web site comprising a web page having activatable links corresponding to respective ones of the predetermined selectable mobile information channels that have been activated by the user through the content management web site.

20. An article of manufacture comprising a machine-readable medium storing one or more software programs for use in managing information content in a network-based communication system, wherein the one or more programs when executed by a processing element of the communication system implement the steps of:

providing a content management web site identified by a first uniform resource locator and accessible to a user of the system, the content management site permitting the user to author content to be added to at least one of a plurality of predetermined selectable mobile information channels and to select activation of particular ones of the plurality of predetermined selectable mobile information channels each corresponding to an information category, the content management web site comprising a web page listing the predetermined selectable mobile information channels with respective indications of whether or not said channels have been activated by the user; and

generating a mobile web site identified by a second uniform resource locator different than the first uniform resource locator so as to allow the mobile web site to be accessed by a plurality of users independently of the content management web site via one or more mobile devices over a wireless network of the communication system, the mobile web site comprising a web page having activatable links corresponding to respective ones of the predetermined selectable mobile information channels that have been activated by the user through the content management web site.
