Lottery Winners, Idols, Superheroes And Sled Dogs Share Space In This Week's Google Weekly Zeitgeist

Google Announces Top 10 Gainers for the Week Ending March 10th

It was a week of anomalies in Google searches. Topping the list is conservative pundit [ann coulter] who's getting plenty of heat for calling presidential candidate John Edwards a "faggot" during remarks at the Conservative Political Action Conference this week. At the other end of the temperature scale, the annual [iditarod] 1142-mile sled dog race kicked off this week place in the far reaches of Alaska. In the world of visual storytelling, a screen adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel, [300], premiered; and Marvel Comics killed off long-time superhero [captain america] in the finale of a seven-issue series.

Meanwhile, searchers demonstrated their avid attention to "American Idol." Although last week's list-topper [antonella barba] dropped in Zeitgeist popularity, people sought to contrast the treatment she received -- being allowed to stay on the show even after racy photos taken earlier were circulated online - and [frenchie davis], a season two contestant who was dismissed after similarly revealing photos of her surfaced.

In the world of chronology, people sought confirmation (and probably reminders) about the fact that [daylight savings] time begins three weeks early this year, on March 11 - and for the first time in almost three years, the first total [lunar eclipse] occurred. People also sought out news about actress [elizabeth hurley]'s wedding in India, including the fracas between her security team and local media. Others dove in to the story about the richest [lottery] in U.S. history, a multi-state bonanza that yielded $390 million for at least two winners in Georgia and New Jersey. Finally, it wouldn't be March without some basketball action, and fans followed the saga in the [acc tournament], a 3-day competition in Tampa that has led to NC State and North Carolina facing off for the final game on March 11.

For breaking news and obscure information alike, people around the world search on Google. What follows is a summary of Google Zeitgeist results for the top gainers on Google.com, when comparing search queries that have risen by a significant percentage for the week of March 4-10, 2007.
